Name some songs with poppy melodies that then break into chaos and noise

Example: Sonic Youth - Silver Rocket

That song starts off as catchy as Teenage Riot, drifts into all out noise jamming in the middle, and then comes back to the first part near the end.

Other examples? The noise doesn't have to be in the middle, although that makes it better in my opinion.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 21 January 2006 06:30 (twenty years ago)

Faust - A Little Bit of Pain

(I may have that name slightly wrong). I love this song. Really, it's amazing. At around just 2 minutes, it's so beautiful. Get it now.

Mickey (modestmickey), Saturday, 21 January 2006 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Beck's "Electric Music and the Summer People" (the first version, circa '96).

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 21 January 2006 06:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Art Star"

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 21 January 2006 07:08 (twenty years ago)

Um, "Whole Lotta Love"? That's some serious Sonic Youth-y stuff during the orgasm part.

bendy (bendy), Saturday, 21 January 2006 07:33 (twenty years ago)

Prince, "Pop Life"

National Roffle Association (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 21 January 2006 07:38 (twenty years ago)

The song about the sunshine:

This Heat "Health & Efficiency"

larssen (larssen), Saturday, 21 January 2006 07:57 (twenty years ago)

B.A.D., "Rush" is a less extreme example -- chaotic, perhaps, but certainly not noisy

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 21 January 2006 08:46 (twenty years ago)

this song called DEERHOOF

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Saturday, 21 January 2006 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, "Anna Apera" (Tatay version)
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, "Sweet Johnny"

I second the Faust recommendation too.

Deluxe (Damian), Saturday, 21 January 2006 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Yo La Tengo to thread.

A more restrained option might be American Music Club's "In the Shadow of the Valley."

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Saturday, 21 January 2006 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Sands: Listen To The Sky

harvey.w (harvey.w), Saturday, 21 January 2006 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Going back to the sixties now:
"Susan"-the Buckinghams
"Morning Girl"-Neon Philharmonic

And while we're there, I see nothing REMOTELY poppy about "Psychotic Reaction." The Count Five came out of the gate kicking ass on that one; that song is hard rock all the way.

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Saturday, 21 January 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

dEUS - Little Arithmetics

Geofforoery BOothroydsz, Saturday, 21 January 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Total obviousness: My Bloody Valentine's "You Made Me Realise," which ie basically the platonic ideal of this kind of thing, and not coincidentally the Official #1 Best Rock and Roll Song of All Time in this household. OK, I might be overstating it, but not by much.

xero (xero), Saturday, 21 January 2006 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Cornelius - 'Thank You For The Music', 'Star Fruits Surf Rider', 'Chapter 8: Seashore and Horizon', 'Fly', 'Rock/96' + remixes of: High Llamas - 'Homespin Rerun', Beck - 'Mixed Bizness', Money Mark - 'Maybe I'm Dead'
The United States of America - 'Hard Coming Love', 'Coming Down'
Plus-Tech Squeeze Box - 'starship.6', 'rival', 'Sabotage', 'A Day In The Radio'
The Aprils feat. YMCK - 'Twinkle of the Stars, Little Stars, Shining Stars'
The Beta Band - 'Dr Baker', 'It's Not Too Beautiful'
Takako Minekawa - 'Spin Spider Spin'
Mum And Dad - 'Marvin', 'The Electric Mistress' (which reverse the thread title)
Flipper's Guitar - 'The Quizmaster', 'The World Tower'

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Saturday, 21 January 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Not exactly poppy to start off with - more twee - but very few twee songs end up with two minutes of pure white noise like Northern Picture Library's "Dear Faraway Friend".

Rick Spence (spencerman), Saturday, 21 January 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

a second vote for This Heat - "Health and Efficiency"...that's bestest.

bobby.lasers (bobby.lasers), Saturday, 21 January 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Surprised nobody's mentioned this.

The Beatles - "A Day In The Life"

"Strawberry Fields Forever" too, for that matter.

R. J. Greene, Saturday, 21 January 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Of course, "A Day In The Life" and SFF.

And then, jeez: Wilco, Wilco, Wilco. "Misunderstood" and "Sunken Treasure", first, then "Shot In The Arm", then pretty much all of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot except "Heavy Metal Drummer".

And The Roots - The Water (except they never get back to the poppy part).

Also:

At least one song at every concert The Grateful Dead ever played.
And a ton of other stuff from the psychedelic era, including:
Jimi Hendrix - 1983 (A Mermaid I Will Turn To Be)
Jimi Hendrix - Wild Thing (extra points for him, and for The Who, in creating actual, physical chaos to go with the sonic chaos)
Cream - N.S.U.
Jefferson Airplane - Lather
Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride, Born To Be Wild, Monster

Vornado, Saturday, 21 January 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

About 60% of Faith No More.
About 7% of John Zorn.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 21 January 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

R. J. Greene, Saturday, 21 January 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Sunday, 22 January 2006 07:58 (twenty years ago)

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Sunday, 22 January 2006 08:02 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and how about Nirvana's "Love Buzz"!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Sunday, 22 January 2006 08:03 (twenty years ago)
