According to a commentary track on Dig!, the B-side to this single features singer/genius Anton Newcombe and tamborinist/genius Joel Gion playing music and fucking around on peyote, a track that supposedly freaked the Dandies out. I'm betting it's amazing so I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get my greasy meat hooks on it?
And if nothing else, has anyone heard it?

It's on the new double-disc retrospective called Tepid Peppermint Wonderland. Now available at your local Virgin Megastore for $10!

Trouble with the BJM is that while they make for fascinating and hilarious documentary material, their music is borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, with the amount of drugs these guys do it's a real shame they never managed to do anything interesting, genuinely psychedelic, or even on a par with XTC's psych pastiche Dukes of the Stratosfear.

good parties though

I've got a copy of it... It's basically Anton spinning records while he gabs about meeting the Dandys for the first time and then commenting on their "success."

alex pretty otm. I love Anton, but when will people realize that insanity/drug-addction/insert-mental-problem-here added to "an ok songwriter" does not equal "genius".

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:11 (twenty years ago)

i disagree. as far as music is concerned, genius is a term different people give to different artists so i'm not going to argue that he is a genius because if it's not what you're into or whatever then there's no point. still, the band/anton makes consistently great records (minus a few ehh ones) that may not feature the most original song writing but it takes from a bunch of great bands from way back when and he finds ways to make the music his own. the result is a bunch of great songs. he may not be a genius but it probably takes a lot of fucking talent to write and be the primary creative force that many songs. i could see why you think it would be boring as well because there are a lot of similar basslines and progressions, but if you can get past that then BJM offers, if nothing more, great music to chill to. which is something i hardly think is boring.

i'm not sure what you mean by "genuinely psychedelic," rombald. have you heard the album "their satanic majesties second request"? all sorts of psychedelia there...

Oh, then I was thinking of a different song that freaked the Dandy's out. In the liner notes of Tepid Peppermint Wonderland, it mentions that one of the songs upset the Dandy's cuz they thought it was about them and threatened to retalliate with a song called "Your Girlfriend is 16," but it wasn't even written by Anton, so they were just being paranoid I guess.

Is that right? That's a shame. The doco was getting me curious about their music, because you don't hear a lot of it in the movie. What's that groovy groovy song featured several times with live footage and the killer bassline that sounds psychedelic/Happy Mondays-ish (not the vocals, just the music). Which album is it from? Is there more like it?

BJM is great. Buy "Give It Back" and "Thank God For Mental Illness" and then tell me how boring they are.

Dave Depper, Monday, 23 January 2006 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Just get Tepid Peppermint Wonderland. It's 2 very long cd's and it's great.

They're boring.

welcome back Alex, although I was hoping that you would have more colorful language when describing BJM. The new gig must be leeching your vociferousness.

don weiner (don weiner), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 03:59 (twenty years ago)

They have 1 or 2 good songs per album, and most of their albums seem to be gigantic 79 minute affairs, fuck that shit.

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 04:07 (twenty years ago)

That's why Tepid Peppermint Wonderland is the ideal choice. It grabs the best songs from the last 10 albums.

Guitarzan, Tuesday, 24 January 2006 04:16 (twenty years ago)

I love em. Nail Honey to the Bee, Straight Up and Down, You Look Great When I'm High are all good grooves, and about a dozen or two more. It's all just ripping off Between the Buttons, but why not? And then there's the Skygreen Leopards, which sound (or at least their EP does) just like BJM

Donald nitchie, Tuesday, 24 January 2006 04:42 (twenty years ago)

well, Alex - you are so boring repeating the same phrase all the time, to be honest. No offence though.

I only have Strumg Out in Heaven and Tepid Peppermint Wonderland and I think they are awesome. Can't wait for the shipping from BOMP to arrive.

regards from Vienna.
