Does anyone have this yet and can you tell me how "complete" this is before I shell out the dough?

From the Cherry Red site:

Glaxo Babies were the fore-runners of a wave of Bristol music that spawned The Pop Group, Rip Rig & Panic, Maximum Joy & Pigbag, who all became household names as the jagged edged angst movement quickly gathered respect throughout the world.
A firm favourite with John Peel, the Glaxo’s soon notched up their first session following on from the highly acclaimed first release – the 12” This your Life EP which included the classic Who Killed Bruce Lee. Always underrated but never dismissed, they fought back with the blistering Christine Keeler 45 often sighted as the bands finest moment. This collection spans their career, illustrating just how unique and original the Glaxos were, and how their relevance seems ever present with today’s jagged edged sounds

This Is Your Life / Stay Awake / Who killed Bruce Lee / Avoiding The Issue / Police State / Burning / Flesh / She Went To Pieces (live) / Christine Keeler / Nova Bossanova / Puppet Patrol / Maximum Sexual Joy / Promised Land / Conscience / Shake (The Foundations)

I won't say anything about Jess on this thread. I promise not to.

It's got both sides of the "Christine Keeler" single, about a third of the songs from the "Nine Months To The Disco" album about 75% of songs from the "Put Me On The Guest List" album and a couple of others. Not really complete, but a pretty good selection, though nothing from their amazing "Limited Entertainment" 4-track EP.

I emailed Heartbeat Records a few years ago and offered to do 2 CDs compiling everything they recorded. I really like them, they weren't very consistent, but they had a charm. After not hearing back after a few emails, that was that. At first I was dissapointed that they'd distill everything down to 1 CD, but I just went through all the songs and that's pretty much the best stuff. They left off most of the more "experimental" stuff from the Nine Months to the Disco LP, which is fine, but also the entire Limited Entertainment ep, maybe because that was on Y and they had trouble licensing? That's a great single and can probably be picked up pretty cheap.

The band had 2 distinct sounds, sort of, I think involving the changing of line-up. Half of the tracks are from the Put Me on the Guest List comp, which came out later but is the earlier stuff, that stuff is varied but angular, punky(post-punky) while the later stuff is a bit more produced, more funky but not as much "songwriting". Compare This is Your Life to Maximum Sexual Joy and you'll hear the difference.

Cherry Red did the world another favor in working with Heartbeat by reissuing Avon Calling, the Bristol comp that featured another earlier Glaxo Song thats not on here, It's Irrational.

It also features the Heartbeat singles, including a bunch of the same Glaxo Babies tracks. I don't know much else on their except Skodas and Europeans from the Cherry Red Seeds compilations, and they're both great.

And John, if you buy this, I'll email you the missing songs or something.

Thanks Dan. ha ha that was like flashing the bat signal into the sky, i knew you would respond within 5 minutes! The CD seemed a bit random and I personally would always rather hear the whole LP's and singles as they were released than someone elses idea of what we should or should not hear, ya know? But i will probably grab this just to check it out. And yeah I saw that compilation being available too and it looked more intriguing than the Glaxo Babies CD (and for a double CD the exact same price I think).

and might I add that that Cherry Red also is just reissuing the Chesterfields anthology (from Subway Records), featuring none other than our own Tim Goldsworthy's late brother Davey!

oh cool! I remember when Tim brought him to Plant bar once ages ago...

The Glaxo CD probably does right to distill it down, but I'll have to hear how the different sides/sounds of the band work together. But really, most of what was left out were the tracks on Nine Months that, when I say "experimental", I mean, they get really noodly and a bit self-indulgent! I mean, one song is entirely backwards...you get the drift!

Also missing is the dub "version" of Who Killed Bruce Lee...which I could give or take. I'm assuming that's the case because if they used that and left the original off the comp, that'd be really bad!

ha ha, it's only going to get worse with all the great reissues coming out in 2006.

I was thinking of you just a minute ago, Dan, then I saw this thread. I'm listening to that Object Music comp. right now - the one I was going to get from you I got it from someone else. Anyway. I.Q. Zero are better than I remembered, though very Devo-ish, which I suppose isn't such a bad thing. Fireplace are ACE, and the Mediaters sound pretty good too. Picture Chords were laughably bad - those synthesizer noises are hilarious! It's like a B grade horror movie from the 60's.

Sorry - I do think "In Defense Of Digging" really is a fabulous name for a comp. - are you really going to do one called that Dan or were you just joking? Heh heh.

I'm pleased to see there is a Glaxo Babies CD on the way.

I decided to procure Spherical Objects albums on vinyl for my very own, despite having most of them on disc for a few years. Cost me a pretty penny, but was worth it. Talk about thick vinyl.

Is the Avon Calling worth getting? I've been looking out for Glaxo Babies material and was pointed in this direction but since I don't recognise even half the bands on the listing I'm left wondering?

tolstoy (tolstoy), Sunday, 22 January 2006 10:31 (twenty years ago)

sorry I forgot about the Object stuff! Did you get Objectivity as well?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 22 January 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

No I don't have that one! Is it the one with the Warriors? I want to hear the Warriors very badly.

Surely we can arrange a trade?

Yeah...I'll check your last emails and try to pick up where we were. I have a bunch of trading I need to catch up on. My excuse is always what a huge pain in the ass my local post office is. I mean, there was even a saturday night live skit spoofing the inconvenience of brooklyn post offices. I shouldn't even say that because last time I needed it, to send out 70 promo Crazy Rhythms CDs because RVNG was on vacation, there was no line and the woman was supremely nice. anyway...

xpost

Also those last two bands on the Manchester Collection comp are really good - F.T. Index and especially Slight Seconds.

The Warriors is basically, Spherical Objects/friends doing dub I think with a harmonica. Not that interesting at first, but suprisingly moving by the end. Off-topic I know, but I've been dying to hear the Grow Up LPs for the longest time and never see them.

Ah, Heartbeat Records:

The home of "Europeans" by Europeans.

Is that the Stephen Street of Morrissey fame, or another?

seven years pass...

"Nine Months To The Disco" and "Put Me On The Guest List" have just received reissues. I need to review the tracks on comps I've got before I decide to pull the trigger...
