Trace Bands Back To One Beatles Song

Let's do the same with the Velvet Underground! (SPIN Record Guide said that entire indie rock subgenres can be attributed to tossed-off VU studio goofs or some such thing).

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Candy Says

I don't understand this at all. Give "That's the Story of My Life" to Gorky's and leave "Candy Says" to Low.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

It seems like Sonic Youth is closer to "I Heard Her Call My Name" than "Sister Ray." A lot of these connections seem pretty tenuous, too. I think Mazzy Star is probably closer to "Here She Comes Now" or "Sunday Morning" than to "All Tomorrow's Parties."

Maybe, the Clientele = "Femme Fatale" or "Here She Comes"?

This is tough.

The Wedding Present - What Goes On
Throbbing Gristle - Lady Godiva's Operation

Venga (Venga), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Probably right re Mazzy Star -- "All Tomorrow's Parties" really only applies to She Hangs Brightly.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Stereolab - Lady Godiva's Operation
The Modern Lovers - Foggy Notion

Shouldn't these be switched around?

The Feelies: What Goes On

new rule: if the artist has already covered the song, NO FAIR.

danielle the animal steel (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:55 (twenty years ago)

OTM also about "What Goes On" --> The Wedding Present--I'd specify the "Live with Lou Reed 1969" version.

Have you heard GZM's last two albums? They re-write Candy Says about 7 times between them.

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 01:34 (twenty years ago)

Brian Eno - "Pale Blue Eyes"

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 01:37 (twenty years ago)

Give "That's the Story of My Life" to Gorky's and leave "Candy Says" to Low.

I'd say Low --> "Pale Blue Eyes," but I only have a couple of Low albums, so maybe I'm missing something.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci ----> Incredible String Band.

No Velvets.

I'm Waiting For the Man- The Strokes

Harrison Barr (Petar), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 03:09 (twenty years ago)

Sister Ray - I Heard Her Call My Name

coles law, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 04:52 (twenty years ago)

The Birthday Party --> Venus In Furs
The Swans --> Venus In Furs
Jandek --> The Black Angel's Death Song
Coachwhips --> White Light White Heat
Butthole Surfers --> Sister Ray
Meat Puppets --> What Goes On
The Shins --> I'm Beginning To See The Light
...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead --> I'm Waiting For The Man
Arab On Radar --> European Son
The Mae-Shi --> European Son
Beat Happening --> I Heard Her Call My Name
The Sun City Girls --> The Murder Mystery and Sister Ray
Built To Spill --> Pale Blue Eyes

Try that on for size. Noise rock comes from White Light White Heat, I'm Waiting For The Man, European Son, Sister Ray and the Black Angel's Death Song, mostly.

The Feelies: What Goes On
new rule: if the artist has already covered the song, NO FAIR.

-- danielle the animal steel

Irrelevant. They also covered the Stones, Beatles and Neil Young, none of whom they remotely sound like. "What Goes On" is pure Velvets.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 09:01 (twenty years ago)

Heh heh...I was going to trace Stereolab back to "Sister Ray", but I can't, 'cause I already traced 'em back to "It's All Too Much" on the Beatles thread!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 09:03 (twenty years ago)

"Beat Happening --> I Heard Her Call My Name"

uhhhhh.... what?

white hole (white hole), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

My Bloody Valentine: "Heroin"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Brian Eno - "Pale Blue Eyes"

This is a horribly wrong and misinformed opinion. Go listen to "The True Wheel" now, please.
