Where does one go in Chicago to get old psych / progressive stuff, Akarma reissues and the like? I mean besides Reckless.
I'll be there in a few hours can anyone help?

Roger, Monday, 16 January 2006 06:30 (twenty years ago)

go up to Evanston -- Vintage Vinyl.

Be prepared to pay an arm & a leg. However, dude *does* haev the goods. It's a question of whether you want to pay his prices I guess. He has good quality vinyl originals, and also copious amounts of CD boots (shh). few years ago I got a great Bedlam CD boot I'll probably never see again, and I also picked up the two-LP comp of post-Human Instinct Billy TK Powerhoue stuff ... there are actual bargains to be had at that place ... you have to be sharp .. but yeah, check it out.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 16 January 2006 06:38 (twenty years ago)

Perfect, exactly what i was looking for. Thanks a ton dude. How far is this place to get to from, say, The Empty Bottle?

roger, Monday, 16 January 2006 06:40 (twenty years ago)

hmm ... now that will be a bit difficult .. you have to .. hey waitaminute, this is Roger A rite? hay Roger, what up man. So yeah, -- the problem w/ getting to Evanston from Wicker-Park/UK-Village area is that you have to take the Blue line basically in the *wrong* direction -- back downtown -- in order to then switch to the Red Line -- which will take you all the way to Evanston ( or shit, you may have to switch to Purple Line at Howard. hm), but it's not far from the tracks at that point. But yeah, it is totally a hike. You would want to set aside a good four hours probably (both for travel and for browsing )

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 16 January 2006 06:44 (twenty years ago)

If you go during rush hour you can at least catch the purple line at Belmont and save a massive amount of time.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 16 January 2006 06:47 (twenty years ago)

Actually the bus goes from the red line Chicago ave. stop right to the empty bottle right?

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 16 January 2006 06:47 (twenty years ago)

hey man! yep it's me. we'll have the rental car with us. should i just mapquest from the bottle?

we're playing for free tomorrow night, by the way, if you wanna come say hello

roger, Monday, 16 January 2006 07:02 (twenty years ago)

I donno what mapquest will recommend, but i suggest taking Western all the way north to evanston (it becomes asbury) tho you'll want to mapquest downtown evanston for sure.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 16 January 2006 07:07 (twenty years ago)

is there anything closer i oughta check out? again, besides reckless...

roger, Monday, 16 January 2006 07:12 (twenty years ago)

cool, Rog, I will definitely try to be there! I have to work at like 7 am on Tuesday so it will be a bitch but fuck it, I'd like to meet ya finally ... but yeah, I'd say take the van on up there, use mapquest, whatever; dude's address is: 925 Davis St. - Evanston, IL.

I can't think of anything else beyond reckless honestly .. this town is picked over .. possibly the 2nd Hand Tunes on Clark (Lincoln Park)? or Hi-Fi on Clark? Haven't been to either of those places in ages though, so I dunno ...

this is the typa shit (new cds) he sends in his update-

roj, Monday, 16 January 2006 07:25 (twenty years ago)

Dusty Groove!

gear (gear), Monday, 16 January 2006 07:27 (twenty years ago)

xpost: Probably like playing a show at the Garfield Art Works, except you won't have to deal with Manny Theiner. Also, Empty Bottle used to have this beer that I've never seen anywhere else called Elephant, which was like PBR with a higher alcoholic content.

ng-unit, Monday, 16 January 2006 12:44 (twenty years ago)

2nd for dusty groove...
and it's way closer.

bobby.lasers (bobby.lasers), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Dusty Groove is excellent, but doesn't have a lot on the psych/prog reissues front. Actually, Evil Clown on Lincoln and Monstrose has a lot of reissue cds at reasonable prices.

Vintage Vinyl is nice to look at but don't waste your time unless you want to drop some serious loot and feel like an asshole at the same time for patronizing a shop with such ridiculous pricing. The last time I was in there, they were charging 22$ for the NEU! reissues on CD. Bullshit.

William Selman (William Selman), Monday, 16 January 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

man, i was looking on the record store website and it really hit home how few record stores are left in the city. wow.
