i don't have a clue what these two people have to do with each other besides being female.

but since you asked...

kirsty's "they don't know" is one of my fave songs of all time in either her or tracey's version (which are actually identical tracks with different lead vocals swapped in). kirsty's vocals measurably improved morrissey's solo career. kirsty's vocals measurably improved one of the greatest xmas songs of all time. kirsty did lots of other good stuff and lots of not-so-good stuff too.

and cyndi wins for "time after time."

It's Cyndi by a long way for me, though I quite liked Kirsty too. I recommend Cyndi's great version of What's Going On, if you haven't tried it.

Easily Cyndi Lauper. She has a great voice and atleast two fairly solid albums. And her most recent release of standards was actually pretty good.

Unfortunately Kirsty MacColl passed away several years ago after an accident (I believe it was a boating accident).

Oh dear.

The jaded auto-hipster in me initially shrieked in horror at the comparison, and I can understand others' more measured opinions after reading other answering here...

...but I will never be personally convinced of Cindi Lauper's talents standing next to Kirsty MacColl for songwriting or vocal firepower. "Time After Time," sure, if that's your cuppa, but "Titanic Days" takes it in a pinch, and there's nothing to match "They Don't Know." And those harmonies!

I do have to agree Kirsty was an excellent songwriter. I do feel that Kirsty's best songs are better than Cyndi's best songs. But I still go with Cyndi overall.
