It's been way too long since I found an album that knocked my jaw to the floor

As usual, I've been buying album after album after album, but it's occured to me that in the past few months I haven't gotten one better than "very good". It's that time again...for something new and fresh.

Please recommend me some albums that you would think I would like. Here are some of my favorite bands for reference; however, I don't particularly want more music that sounds similar to this, but instead something different that you still think I will appreciate based on my tastes:

Captain Beefheart
Husker Du
Stereolab
Sonic Youth
Cocteau Twins
Can
Pussy Galore
Prince
Big Star

I was thinking perhaps Scott Walker as a start...I haven't heard anything by him...which are his more "experimental" albums that I always hear about?

There aren't too many guidelines, although I ask that it is SOMEWHERE in the field of rock and pop; it can be as experimental as you wish, but I've already got all the rap/jazz/etc. I need for now.

Get Tilt. The early stuff is nice, but you apparently want to dislodge your jaw. Tilt is your ticket.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 14 January 2006 06:20 (twenty years ago)

The Hold Steady-Separation Sunday and the Mountain Goats-All Hail West Texas are the albums that got me going recently. They aren't directly associated with your favorites, but wow, they're good.

WillS, Saturday, 14 January 2006 06:21 (twenty years ago)

michael jackson - thriller

more seriously:
anything by endless boogie; it's the best rock i've heard in a while

lf, Saturday, 14 January 2006 07:56 (twenty years ago)

i think you should listen to hounds of love

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 14 January 2006 08:31 (twenty years ago)

If you never heard a copy of the Raggett-assembled Five EPs by Disco Inferno, I would strongly reccomend that

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 14 January 2006 08:39 (twenty years ago)

the Seeds - Future

mucho, Saturday, 14 January 2006 08:40 (twenty years ago)

M.I.A. - Arular
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
These bands could be your life.

(this is a joke...)

Stephen C (ihope), Saturday, 14 January 2006 08:43 (twenty years ago)

joke or not Stephan C, those ARE shit records.
I recommend Oneida "the wedding"

chad (chad), Saturday, 14 January 2006 09:34 (twenty years ago)

gg.

Stephen C (ihope), Saturday, 14 January 2006 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Do you have the first record by Os Mutantes, or "Jane From Occupied Europe" by The Swell Maps?

How about Nico's "Chelsea Girl" or Holger Czukay's "On the Way To the Peak of Normal"?

Do you already own Gary Numan + The Tubeway Army's "Replicas" or Gregory Isaac's "Slum in Dub"?

If the answer is no, check one of them out.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Saturday, 14 January 2006 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Robert Wyatt - Shleep

James Brown - Live at the Apollo

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Saturday, 14 January 2006 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Seems like US Maple is kind of an obvious choice, given Beefheart and SY. Get Talker or Acre Thrills.

dlp9001, Saturday, 14 January 2006 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Why are Arcade Fire shit? Oh yes, it's because lots of people like them. I should have guessed.

Wax Cat (Wax Cat), Saturday, 14 January 2006 13:27 (twenty years ago)

moonshake 'eva luna', same label as stereolab, named after a can song, somewhat difficult vocalist on half of the songs.

keyth (keyth), Saturday, 14 January 2006 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Supersilent 6!

poortheatre (poortheatre), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Burnette trio - "The Train Kept A-Rollin'" is 100% guaranteed to drop jaws. And it was made circa 1956.

"an album that knocked my jaw to the floor" are these ever the ones you look for with that expectation?

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, for Scott Walker I'd start with Scott 3. It's "early stuff" but would knock anyone's jaw anywhere, and is more accessible then Tilt.

Robert Wyatt's Shleep is a great suggestion and a great album.

When I think of my favorite music that just slays me with how goddamn good it is, I think Roxy Music.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

i don't know why i feel weird saying this, but the newest Broadcast album has been consistently dropping my jaw to the floor for the past couple of days. if i could do it all again, it'd ben top 5 for 2005 easily.

Scott 3??? more like.... Scott 4, which at one point knocked my jaw to the floor. 3 gets dragged down by one or two of the brel covers. 4's only flaw is opening track.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

dan otm re: roxy

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 14 January 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

...more accessible then Tilt.

Dude, if I can get my ultra-square dad to enjoy listening to Tilt in the car, then anyone can get into it.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 14 January 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm happy to have found someone else who doesn't care for the first song on Scott 4! But I stand by 3. The atmosphere created by the opening of It's Raining Today alone changed my life. Scott 4 has some great songs but it's not as consistent. My favorite Scott songs are actually on Scott 2, but 3 was my entry point.

The new Broadcast record is definately fantastic.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 14 January 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Yes, go for the Broadcast. My most recent "knock my jaw to the floor" discovery has been Paris 1919 by John Cale.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Saturday, 14 January 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

STNNNG - Dignified Sissy.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Saturday, 14 January 2006 17:10 (twenty years ago)

ok...
on the krautrock tip, the neu! records are an obvious choice (either neu! or neu! 75 being the better of the 3 I reckon) or...
popol vuh - einsjager & seibenjager has been flooring me recently.
either harmonia record
cosmos factory by creedence is an incredible album.
as for scott walker, I think he was at his best when not being too experimental. any of the first 4 albums would do you proud.
either the ascension or lesson no 1 by glenn branca would satisfy the sonic youth urges and shed light on where they're coming from

simon 803 (simon 803), Saturday, 14 January 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

where there are several other wonderful CDs worth checking out.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 14 January 2006 19:52 (twenty years ago)

from your list of things you like i would recommend Black Mountain and Dead Meadow.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Saturday, 14 January 2006 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I know taste is taste and I'm not trying to change it, but maybe you need to shift genres for a really jaw dropping experience? Buy Sebastian Bromberger's "Close to me" mix.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 14 January 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

just buy some stereo pressings of great classical music and get it over with already

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Saturday, 14 January 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

I like the new Vitalic album.

That I Could Clamber to the Frozen Moon and Draw the Ladder (Freud Junior), Saturday, 14 January 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Le Volume Courbe - I Killed My Best Friend

Got it the other day, dropped my jaw.

flannelmouthed, Monday, 16 January 2006 20:52 (twenty years ago)

The jaw droppingly good albums for me from the last few years that I haven't heard enough other folks talking about

A Frames - S/T - cranky punk, less atmposheric than their next two (also excellent) albums, but funnier and more abraisive.

Veronica Lipgloss and the Evil Eyes - I can't say enough about these guys, especially given what you listed as your likes- Sort of like Birthday Party meets Morphine meets Blondie. Death rock guitars, sleazy sax, screechy vocals and a real groove.

Reigning Sound- Toom Much Guitar - Probably the best album of all the recent garage rock. A batch of songs that live up to the Stones at thier peak- there's tracks here that are the equal of stuff on Beggars Banquet and Sticky Fingers.

Casual Dots - S/T Bunch of tightly crafted two-guitar indie rock songs that play with folk, post punk, R&B and twang, without ever sounding retro or mannered. Low key, but stunning.

Well, there's always Speakerboxx/The Love Below...

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 01:25 (twenty years ago)

The Taj Mahal Travellers album recently listed at the NWW List blog laid me out flat and speechless.

I got smacked in the face by a box full of Barron Knights albums that fell off a lorry. Fortunately I wasn't struggling with mediaeval aesthetics at the time.

Sinister Oink Kingpin (noodle vague), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Batman knocked me to the floor. Then I got up and knocked him to the floor.

You DO. But as Pox Romani you not get it anyhoo.

Slugbait (noodle vague), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Dan OTM on Ellington -- great record!

Try "Second Edition"/"Metal Box" by Public Image. I think that'll work nicely with your taste.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 02:47 (twenty years ago)

A couple things come to mind...

Lee Hazlewood "Cowboy In Sweden"

Television - "Live At The Old Waldorf, San Francisco, 6/29/78" (came out on Rhino Handmade and might be out of print, but is definitely available on p2p networks. Get it anyway you can, yes it's that good)

Roxy Music is totally OTM - I suggest starting with "Country Life"

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 03:23 (twenty years ago)

Kind of funny, a lot of these suggestions are pretty random.

For the Beefheart/Can trip, in addition to P.i.L., I'll add:

Pere Ubu * Datapanik In The Year Zero EP (Radar) 75
Pere Ubu * The Modern Dance (Blank) 77
Pere Ubu * Dub Housing (Rough Trade) 78

Re Sonic Youth:

Steve Reich * Music For 18 Musicians (ECM) 78

Husker Du:

Mission Of Burma * VS. (Ace Of Hearts) 82

Prince:

Sly & the Family Stone * There's A Riot Going On (Epic) 71

And the first four Eno albums just in case.

yeah, i can't disagree with this.

danielle the animal steel (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 08:10 (twenty years ago)

How about 65daysofstatic's "The Fall of Math" and "One time for all time"? I was knocked sideways by them - they're reasonably heavy but if you like Sonic Youth they may appeal.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 08:13 (twenty years ago)

have you heard sulk by the associates?

awesome is as awesome does (lucylurex), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 09:08 (twenty years ago)

cos dude its one of those albums thats so amazing i could just ram it down your throat!! in a benevolent way.

awesome is as awesome does (lucylurex), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 09:10 (twenty years ago)

the last album that did that for me was Up the Bracket by the Libertines, but I know they're mostly hated on these boards.
Ever heard The Days of Wine and Roses by the Dream Syndicate?

dr x o'skeleton, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Coil's The Ape of Naples has been knocking my jaw to the floor everyday now since december

rizzx, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 09:51 (twenty years ago)

The Luxurious Bags "Voluntary Lifelong Quarantine" LP
Holger Hiller "As Is" CD
Jesse Colter, Waylon Jennings etc. "White Mansions" LP
Joni Mitchell "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" LP
