music-wise, natch. ideas, thoughts, projects, music you want to make.anything. if you don't want to jinx yourself, just make vague references to "project x". i'm gonna be vague and say that once i am done writing this long-ass thing i'm writing on my rap hero, and after i am done writing some spec reviews and my monthly metal reviews, i am going full steam ahead on a super-secret highly illegal fanzine that I have been planning for awhile all about my love for Michael Franks, and then i am gonna get down to the dirty work of cataloguing my 1000's of pop & country & disco & R&B 45s from the 50's/60's/70's and writing about the ones that strike my fancy and putting that somewhere, and after that, well, if there is an after that I will be very lucky. This year, anyhow. I'm really excited by the sounds that I hear every day - more now than I have been in many a moon - and i want to write about it all more than ever. you have been warned.

anyway, those are some of my plans. for the year. for the immediate future. i want to hear yours. and i want to hear non-plans: ideas, obsessions, genres or artists you want to tackle to the ground and pummel with your bare hands/sounds that are driving you crazy. really, anything. i like to know how your brains are working and what yoo r into at the moment.

yeah, i'm drunk. what of it? oh yeah, i'm gonna finally pitch that noize book idea to a couple of people. that needs to get done.

anyway, you don't have to tell me nothing. i'm just curious. and i'm sick of pavement threads. (and i LIKE pavement!)

(how far along is it? can i help? e-mail me if it's too super-secret to discuss here.)

trying to finish the introductory chapter to my dissertation on melancholy (all the other chapters are already written but need revision- the hard part is summarizing the "backstory" as that has to cover roughly 2000 years of medical history)

trying to construct MAX patches that will emulate the "Delilah" voice encryption device built by Alan Turing as discussed in Andrew Hodges awesome biography "Alan Turing: The Enigma"

trying to finish a second version of a remix that is way overdue

trying to get started on a collaboration by mail cut up noise record (we each have each other's material and now it's time to start choppin)

trying to finish my EMP pop conference proposal on time

trying to brainstorm for my talk on "anecdotes of violence in relation to the consumption of music" at a 20th century literature and culture conference- I want to talk about the function of narratives about real world violence (street crime, suicide, etc.) in relation to how we talk about and consume music- i.e. suicidal validation of depressive musical creativity, the factoid about the number of times 50 Cent was shot as a marketing device, black metal church burnings etc. are all connected here as ways of constellating music with "belief"- I want to think up a non-corny way to understand this

trying to write back all the people I have been meaning to write back and the longer I take to do it the more guilty I feel and that spurs me to take even longer to write them because thinking about them reminds me etc. infinite regress . . .

trying to figure out why the Girls Glee Club of New Palestine, Indiana's rendition of the theme to "Midnight Cowboy" turns me to jelly- seek it out, it's on that "Poly High: School Bands Play the Classics" CDR comp that's going around . . .

trying to practice more for shows next week in NYC and Boston

My compilation video about the actress Lauren Holly and the pro wrestler Scott Steiner.

Vendetta Red records and emo-screamo as Catholic melodrama.

Learning to perform a very passionate version of The Ramones "Pet Semetary" on acoustic guitar.

I've been dreaming about making a Motown opera called "The Rest of Your Life" which is basically the story of a couple with artistic ambitions who gradually forget and sink into dull middle class adulthood. I have one song entirely written and arranged in my head -- backng vocals, rhythm parts and all -- it's the part where the man suddenly realizes that they've forgotten their dreams and asks his wife if she still remembers them. It's very maudlin -- I sort of imagine early Marvin Gaye singing it.

I've literally been obsessing on this song for several weeks - every time I'm alone in my car I start singing it and fine-tuning the vocal phrasing, the harmony parts, etc.

I've also been vaguely thinking of an essay or book on myths of authentic blackness in hip-hop and how these are used to market the music to white America, and also about how part of this marketing strategy is to make white people feel like they are listening to something that was not really meant for their consumption (even though it obviously was).

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Saturday, 14 January 2006 07:00 (twenty years ago)

I want to start a band thats kind of a punk/prog/glitch/grunge/techno/psych/metal band...something that does something daring and experimental I'm going to be on drums once I get some and learn how to play them.
Anyone want to join me? E-mail's up there! Oh, and no whining or emo scene garbage allowed here, I'm all funny business!

LoneNut, Saturday, 14 January 2006 07:09 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I also want to play drums in some kind of dance-oriented project/band. Anyone interested?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Saturday, 14 January 2006 07:20 (twenty years ago)

Klaatu. I plan to write a piece about Klaatu.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 14 January 2006 07:31 (twenty years ago)

I want to develop "Pop-Up Video" in the podcast format. You subscribe to a service that scrolls text/icons regarding the songs as they play. Equally heavy on humor and trivia.

And I want to put together a trash-singles covers band focusing on the years 1967-1978. Ideally called AM Gold. I'd play tambourine and sing the occasional lead on King Harvest or Looking Glass or whatever.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 14 January 2006 08:59 (twenty years ago)

both of those ideas are fucking fantastic, Joseph

And why is it that I never seem to see the name of King Harvest or Looking Glass without the other? Why does everybody so closely associate those two groups, including myself?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 14 January 2006 09:05 (twenty years ago)

I was also thinking of making like a super-comprehensive 40 disc mix of US one-hit wonders. That, or various counterparts to Rhino decade boxes--like a 60s one, or a first half of the 00s one, or ones of the 70s, 80s or 90s that focus on underground hits instead of mainstream ones.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 14 January 2006 09:08 (twenty years ago)

Dr. Bill, I'm guessing it's because the lead vocalists in both "Brandy" and "Dancing in the Moonlight" sound very similar to one another. Even the backing vocals in both tunes have a strong resemblance to one another. And both songs cruise along at similar tempos, and I think both feature electric piano, no?

I reckon there are a lot of moustaches to go round in both bands, as well.

Dell (Dell), Saturday, 14 January 2006 09:28 (twenty years ago)

Good thread. The 40 disc mix of US one-hit wonders would be cool. What I would like to see is better metrics for music. What I mean is if anyone is into baseball and sabermetrics, or anyone whose ever read freakonomic they understand how powerful statistics are and how much you can do with it. Certainly with metacritic and all of that there is more data than ever on music. It would be interesting to analyze that data. For example, how much does a good nyt review increase album sales? Esp compared to say a pitchfork review? Thats just the surface of what kind of information that can be gathered.

Stephen C (ihope), Saturday, 14 January 2006 09:42 (twenty years ago)

Do they? I guess so. Both from the same year as well, I imagine that has much to do with it.

the dirty work of cataloguing my 1000's of pop & country & disco & R&B 45s from the 50's/60's/70's and writing about the ones that strike my fancy

don't know what you've got in mind w/this but it sounds like a book. hey, I'd want to read it.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Saturday, 14 January 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

• continue learning how to play more woodwinds so i can construct an album that's all breath and wood.
• collaborate on an album with a friend
• work on a fake "library music" cd with three friends that will be sent to real ad agencies, production houses, etc.
• do the artwork for my friends' record on a decent sized label (by monday---ha!)
• put out about six records
• continue to get frustrated with the way the independent music scene works for small labels.
• try to find more distribution from people who are actually excited about what we're doing
• take a honeymoon
• sell my house and move across the country
• start playing drums again (and maybe finally buy that old ludwig kit i've been drooling over at the music store for so many months)

Trying not to get kicked off my doctorate for spending too much time on my microlabel.

Trying to use the word "microlabel" less.

Avoing MySpace.

trying to be credible.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

I would like to write an article for a major publication about the Columbus hip-hop scene. The amount of talent here is amazing and it's starting to get recognition outside of the area.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Saturday, 14 January 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

trying to rewrite vocal melodies before I go into the studio tomorrow.
finishing writing and arranging the other half of our album so we can rehearse it throughout february and record it in march.
working on tours/release schedules/artwork for the above.

simon 803 (simon 803), Saturday, 14 January 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

rereading the question and answering more specifically...
on the writing side: trying to combine some fela/ethiopiques guitars with arrangements and ideas from steve reich/terry riley et al... and write some hooks that'll actually catch the ear.
on the label front...
pushing to become completely self sufficient and get passed the idea of "a record label" and reach a point where we self fund everything as a band without my bank balance going crazy in the red.

simon 803 (simon 803), Saturday, 14 January 2006 18:54 (twenty years ago)

What I wanna do:

1) Get better
2) Get laid
3) Get paid

Specifics to come, obv.

gandhi's philosophy of satyagraha. especially the idea that personal discipline is more important that achievement. and how that might relate to my music listening habits.

artdamages (artdamages), Saturday, 14 January 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

what i want for the next 30 days

  • decide what i'm writing abt for my first column since it's due wednesday already. advice from my editor so far is "this column is not abt pop music or album reviews" and "don't be too obscurist". considering its for a college daily i'm not really sure where that middle ground lies

  • finally finish hopelessly derivative pop-idm record i've been working on for almost two years

  • convince my band to practice especially as we've just converted my bedroom into a practice space

  • nervous (cochere), Saturday, 14 January 2006 21:45 (twenty years ago)

    1. Catch up on my CD/DVD trades and/or gifts. I'm far too behind.
    2. Participate in NaSoAlMo next year.
    3. More gigs with band, practice more, get better. I am obsessed with my 45-year-old baritone ukelele.
    4. Finish my Best of 2005 mix CD, give to friends.

oh i also have to finish this solo project comp i'm giving to friends as a christmas present. because christmas was about 3 weeks ago

nervous (cochere), Saturday, 14 January 2006 22:44 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to make a room in a house that has a bunch of contraptions that you stick your whole head into that contain music and a little miniature diorama, maybe with some aspect of it that makes it feel alive and a little interactive...moving parts or the music or a smell. the music might be a sound natural to that place or full on composed music. it might be hard work for something potentially just precious, but i like the idea of self-contained visual-audio world you can stick your head into. if nothing else, it seems potentially emotionally soothing for some reason.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 15 January 2006 07:25 (twenty years ago)

    two years pass...

i still haven't put out my michael franks fanzine :(
