Is it too early for a verdict on Kompakt K2?

Too early for a DUD verdict?

Not that it's awful or anything, but none of the tracks so far have really been outstanding.

K2 = decent dj fodder, no more, no less. the new release (K2 07 / Bastien Grine) sounds pretty speicher-esque, i like that.

im afraid cocoon and border community stole kompakts anthem crown away

Yawn (Wintermute), Sunday, 22 January 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

I was just about to say, Cocoon have really been coming with the anthems, that Pig and Dan especially. I wonder how many Kompakt tunes Mayer or Superpitcher play lately.

I agree though yeah, it's not quite Déssous/Pokerflat levels of dreariness but it's not madly interesting either, the only really fresh one was the Steadycam, I thought.

Not heard number 7 yet actually but I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 22 January 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

pretty dud so far, though the a-side of the florent is ok.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 22 January 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

why they need so many offshoots is beyond me.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 22 January 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I just don't know why they reckon producers like Robert Babicz and John Dahlback are actually going to suddenly make great tunes. With respect to both they are so far from what Kompakt is that it just seems kinda cynical, like they thought "well this electrohouse is quite big now, let's make a label for that".

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 22 January 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

I like the gui barrato (spelling?) 12" on k2. Other than that nothing has been outstanding but I think it's too early to write it off.

Bn1 (Bn1), Sunday, 22 January 2006 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Gui Boratto: Aquiplelago, that's a nice track - not outstanding, but it's got something. The only other one I've heard is Steadycam which I wasn't as keen on.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:09 (twenty years ago)

I really liked John Dahlback 'Angry Ghost', and usually i think he is fuckries.

Barnaby (Barnaby), Monday, 23 January 2006 01:07 (twenty years ago)

why they need so many offshoots is beyond me.

so that no one said they were releasing stuff way too often than is 'normal'.

and they say there're even more offshoots than everyone knows...

nique (nique), Monday, 23 January 2006 02:14 (twenty years ago)

So far the only thing that has hit me is the Babicz record (especially the b-side,) even if it isn't as dancefloor oriented.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:05 (twenty years ago)

also like the Boratto, though the new Florent is nice too.

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:51 (twenty years ago)

The Boratto for me is the weakest of a big clump of Holdenalikes that have come along recently, tho it's still ok I guess.

The others being that Elektrochemie tune and a remix Dave Shokh did recently, and probably more too!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Actually, the Bastien Grine seems pretty decent. The first two tracks are kinda standard Get Physical type offerings, but that's not too bad really. Although, like Kompakt, GP has been suspiciously free from criticism lately, and ... not everything they've put out has been that wonderful. (DJ T remixes?)

But the Bastien Grine is good. Too bad Kompakt is just blatently trying to catch the elektrohaus wave.

Cameron Octigan, Saturday, 4 February 2006 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Well, in fairness to GP, the DJ T mixes were a while ago now (plus you can only partly blame them for poor work by usually good remixers!), and the Elektrochemie and Full Body Workout 2 are both pretty great if you ask me.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 4 February 2006 22:20 (twenty years ago)

i gotta disagree -- i could only find one, maybe two tunes on FBW2 that i thought were decent, the rest was very sub-GP-by-numbers. the elektrochemie - vocals, meh. i REALLY like the recent Jona 12, that's killer, and the Hell remix of Chelonis. the new T didn't do it for me after repeated listening (i wanted to like it).

as for K2, seconded on babicz, boratto, one of the dahlbacks (angry ghost i think), but so far that's been it for me. haven't heard the bastien grine yet, should hit the west coast next week.

something less threatening (heywood), Saturday, 4 February 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I thought 2 good tunes on FBW2 but that's not a bad return! I agree about the new T, but also Get Physical released Piccadilly/Mandarine/Body Language relatively recently and get some leeway towards that. Plus I'd still take the new DJ T (which I didn't buy I admit) over almost anything on K2 so far.

I haven't heard the Jona yet, is it actually out?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 4 February 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I quite like the DJ T remix of "Muscle Cars", it's got the same eerie "Voodoo Ray" vibe as his "Animal Magic" remix, although prob not as great as that one. It's really the perfect direction for him to go in, sort of moving alongside the other GP artists but still at a distance, too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 5 February 2006 04:58 (twenty years ago)

I like the way he's robbed the cowbell from "Bar-A-Thym" in it.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 5 February 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the jona is out. at least it is in san francisco, surely you're closer!

and yeah, i'm not trying to start some bitchfest about GP, i love 'em!

something less threatening (heywood), Monday, 6 February 2006 00:27 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
ok so I have done a sort of u-turn. the new Gui Boratto is one of the best releases all year, and the M.U.F.O. thing is very good too.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 7 April 2006 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I've heard Boratto's Arquipélago and Sozinho 12s and the 'Great Match' one-sided, and love them all. Anybody have an opinion on his older 12s ('Twiggy' and 'Sunrise') or his remixes?
