This is a truly weird list ... Surely there are worse than Seal, and has anyone even heard enough about The Noise Next Door to legitimately merit a Top 10 spot?

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/the10/story/0,,1689255,00.html

1. Geri Halliwell
2. Cilla Black
3. The Noise Next Door
4. Seal
5. Limp Bizkit
6. The Darkness
7. Heather Small
8. G4
9. Classix Nouveaux
10. The Nolan Sisters

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Sunday, 22 January 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

PAULA FUCKING ABDUL

Ryan Pitchfork (Ryan Pitchfork), Sunday, 22 January 2006 23:50 (twenty years ago)

i haven't heard of half that list.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 22 January 2006 23:55 (twenty years ago)

Who the hell has cared about Classic Nouveaux?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 22 January 2006 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Noise Next Door OTM.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:00 (twenty years ago)

12 year kids in 1982 or 1983 watching cheggars plays pop or itv's runaround ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:03 (twenty years ago)

PAULA FUCKING ABDUL

Rebuttal: MC FUCKING SCATCAT

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:05 (twenty years ago)

Surely they were bad pop stars because nobody cared about them?

That list is mostly OTM apart from the inexplicable omission of One True Voice.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:06 (twenty years ago)

(and we're not even counting reality TV acts)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:30 (twenty years ago)

Daver OTM. Like rapping with a cartoon cat, being hottt and singing amazing pop singles makes you bad.

Also, Geri Halliwell, from 1996 to 1998 was in fact possibly the best pop star on the planet, OK, she's pretty much depleted her capital, but worst? Not even close.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:45 (twenty years ago)

The fact Geri Scatiwell is no longer the best pop star shows how shite she is at it off her own petard.

beaux knee (boney), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Geri is a better pop star than Easy-V [was] for a starters.

Merryweather (scarlet), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Who the hell has cared about Classic Nouveaux?

That was my thought. It was like nominating Grab Grab The Haddock or something.

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Monday, 23 January 2006 02:17 (twenty years ago)

Wait a second. Limp Biztik (or at least Fred Durst) cover Bittersweet Symphony?

gspm (gspm), Monday, 23 January 2006 03:49 (twenty years ago)

Did they forget about Hearsay already? It wasn't that long ago...

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Monday, 23 January 2006 08:04 (twenty years ago)

What does Ryan have against Paula?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 23 January 2006 08:18 (twenty years ago)

I must hear this Limp Bizkit cover of Bittersweet Symphony.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 23 January 2006 09:04 (twenty years ago)

Who in the hell are the Nolan Sisters? What a strange list.

Mama Roux, Monday, 23 January 2006 09:12 (twenty years ago)

How can this list omit Rob Van-illa Ice?

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:42 (twenty years ago)

duder can't write, is the first problem were confronted with.

"5. Limp Bizkit

Their most appalling moment is also their most recent: last year's terrible cover of the Verve's 'Bittersweet Symphony'. It omitted the Stones sample - fitting, since Fred Durst has built a career on rock music without the good bits."

stupid.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

It was like nominating Grab Grab The Haddock or something.

YAY RANDOM MARINE GIRLS REFERENCE!

(seriously, this is a lame list. no jordy? no lou bega?)

mike a, Monday, 23 January 2006 14:38 (twenty years ago)

cilla black!?! how can anyone who has released a single of the calibre of surround yourself with sorrow be the second worst popstar ever? fools.

cw (cww), Monday, 23 January 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

duder can't write, is the first problem were confronted with.

That reads fine to me, am I just tired and partially blind?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 23 January 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

How about Gary Glitter?

Also, in which parallell universe is Geri Halliwell less talented than Posh Spice?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 23 January 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Did they forget about Hearsay already? It wasn't that long ago...

As already pointed out, "(and we're not even counting reality TV acts)"

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I doubt that Pete Robinson thinks Gary Glitter was in any way a bad pop star.

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

CILLA BLACK? wtf? the observer needs a dick scan.

corey c (shock of daylight), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 08:23 (twenty years ago)

It omitted the Stones sample - fitting, since Fred Durst has built a career on rock music without the good bits.

it's just kind of wack because so desperately unmotivated; is this *really* why he doesn't like the song? because it doesn't have the sample (which wasn't a stones sample anyway)?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Who knows. I guess I'm loath to pick holes in a sentence that's basically just saying "Fred Durst is shit and an idiot"

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 09:58 (twenty years ago)

Right, this thread is now officially a "rubbish pop stars" list.

Starting now:

1) Jaz Man off Babylon Zoo

Basically, guy has hit with track used on a Jeans commercial, proclaims himself the new superstar, and flops spectacularly. Heck, the track was remixed and sped up to 78rpm by Arthur Baker for the ad anyway.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:13 (twenty years ago)

i kind of think there's no such thing as a bad pop star.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:17 (twenty years ago)

Of course there is! All the ones who refuse to go away!!!!!!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:19 (twenty years ago)

2) Bono Vox

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:20 (twenty years ago)

"Who the hell has cared about Classic Nouveaux?"

I really can't understand what Classix Nouveau are doing on this list. I'm not exactly a huge fan of theirs but I've got a couple of singles and saw them live once (they were actually pretty good live) and whilst they're unlikely to make my top thousand of anything in particular anytime soon*, there must be / have been absolutely millions of worse bands at one time or another.

* - other than my hotly-contested list of top 1,000 bands of all time that were basically the former members of X-Ray Spex with a new lead singer who was as bald as a billiard ball, obv....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:29 (twenty years ago)

"2) Bono Vox"

Game over (what do you mean, "2"?!?)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:33 (twenty years ago)

Somebody had chosen 1), OK then:

0) Bono Vox

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Mr. Hewson finally achieves his natural position.
