Single/EP was great... Full-length sucked.

Listening to Thighpulsandra's "Michael Publicity Window" EP now. I ended up buying "I, Thighpulsandra" on the strength of this EP, which is fantastic. "I, Thighpulsandra," on the other hand, is not fantastic.

What are some other cases of albums you bought because of a killer single/EP/live show/whatever and ended up being a total letdown?

That Sunshine album had plenty of good stuff on it!

i am not a nugget (stevie), Monday, 23 January 2006 11:30 (twenty years ago)

I was implying that the Amerie album was a good R&B album but if people were looking for an album full of "1 Thing"'s they'd be disappointed.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 23 January 2006 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Further presuming that your idea of an album full of "1 Thing"'s would not be a good R&B album.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:00 (twenty years ago)

I think both two mixtapes Dead Prez released before RBG were better than it, especially the first one which was just as good as their first LP.

I really liked the French Kicks' Young Lawyer EP, but all the full-lengths have been huge boring duds.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Monday, 23 January 2006 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I band called Starjets cut a killer powerpop single titled "School Days" in 1979. I discovered it on one of those Rhino D.I.Y. collections. When Captain Oi! reissued the band's only album a few years ago, I snapped up a copy. It turned out to be a huge disappointment.

James, Monday, 23 January 2006 14:46 (twenty years ago)

That's the Wolf Parade "Dear Sons and Daughters" EP by the by.

nerve pylon (flat_of_angles), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

I have always had the impression Polyphonic Spree are generally considered a typical albums band rather than a singles one. But if you like that "Light And Day" single, feel free. I love the entire album. ;)

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Beauty Pill's The Cigarette Girl From The Future EP. Their debut was kind of a mess -- their EPs were quite good.

van igloo (van smack), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I have always had the impression Polyphonic Spree are generally considered a typical albums band rather than a singles one. But if you like that "Light And Day" single, feel free

Dom's point is possibly the single version of Soldier Girl was an astounding Perpetua-friendly burst of unconfined joy in a two-line pop song, whereas the album version was such a dirge that one might not bother listening to the album after hearing it on the radio.

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Tracer: The ep was eponymous. The album was Fever to Tell.

js (honestengine), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

I think I remember this thread from a few years ago... and my answer is still Texas Is The Reason. EP was great. Full-length not great.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

To my surprise, the Crazy Frog album wasn't actually that good.

chronic town lol

mr controversy (alanbanana), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Was gonna say TV On The Radio too. Grand National was another one where the best tracks were on the earlier EP.

Mil (Mil), Monday, 23 January 2006 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Do only debut albums count? Otherwise, "Fat Of The Land" anyone?

Also, I would say that Daft Punk have hardly managed to top the quality of their first two singles afterwards.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 23 January 2006 22:55 (twenty years ago)

And... KULA SHAKER!!!

Say what you like, but "Tattva" was indeed a great single!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I suspect that full length albums by Terry Jacks, Thunderclap Newman and The Archies were all less than good...

Pere Ubu.

Although they didn't suck, it was all downhill after the first 2 singles.

three months pass...
Ben Folds' trio of EP's - Speed Graphic, Sunny 16, Super D - great great great. Songs For Silverman - majorly anticlimactic.
