Speakin' of Sly, a used copy of Laswell's "Axiom Funk: Funkronomicon" comp came through our store the other day. I played the first disc for a co-worker of mine who's real into soul/funk stuff and she didn't believe me at first that the track "Tell the World" or whatever was actually Sly Stone.

It's a beautiful little song, but Sly's voice is, in a word, awful. 30 years of massive drug abuse'll do that to a guy, but it's really too bad. Maceo Parker's singing isn't all that great in that song either, but Maceo was never the kind of vocalist Sly was...
