is there such a thing? bands who aren't copping from newer bands because they own a handful of cds (see two gallants- who, typically, don't own any vinyl)? i don't think such a thing exists. and by label i'm refering to a broad spectrum of self-released pitchfork-endorsed-cause-my-roommate-reviews-records CDs, major label turds by people in their early 30s with blazers and $80 brooklyn haircuts, and everything in between.

Mopey Dick are a 9-piece band from Bismarck, SD. They play improvised acid swamp funk using home-made instruments carved from lightning-struck trees and deer bones. Their gigs are never advertised, and feature various band members playing through cardboard megaphones in different venues. Their commitment to keeping things fresh means they have never recorded, although they did once spend 4 hours playing down the telephone to the head of A&R for Shanshui records of Beijing.

Me: I have diarrhea.
Doctor: It might be dysentery.
Me: Is that a type of chili?

The fact is, all good American bands are either assembled by labels Spice Girls-style or grown in test-tubes, and therefore none of them ever exist outside of labels.
