Love's touch comes to mean so much
(Embrasser c'est Francais, Embrasser c'est Francais)
Love's way, S'abandonner
(Embrasser c'est Francais, Embrasser c'est Francais)
Slip inot the velvet glove
Parted lips so filled with love
(Embrasser c'est Francais, Embrasser c'est Francais)
French kissin' in the USA
French kissin' in the USA
Hey French kissin'
French kissin' in the USA
French kissin' in the USA
Lips are in motion
(Ocean to ocean) Woah
Paris is calling
(Falling, we're falling, Oooh Oh Oh)
Lips close then blossom like a rose
(Embrasser c'est Francais, Embrasser c'est Francais)
Lips wide holding you inside
(Embrasser c'est Francais, Embrasser c'est Francais)
Kisses hard kisses deep, a kiss to wake us from our sleep
(Embrasser c'est Francais, Embrasser c'est Francais)
Take you lover by the hand, speak in tongues and understand
French kissin' in the USA
French kissin' in the USA
Hey French kissin'
French kissin' in the USA
French kissin' in the USA
Lips are in motion
(Ocean to ocean) Woah
Paris is calling
(Falling, we're falling, Oooh Oh Oh)
French kissin' in the USA
French kissin' in the USA
Hey French kissin'
French kissin' in the USA

Guy Debord's hot naked bitch, Monday, 23 January 2006 11:55 (twenty years ago)

what is this song actually about?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 23 January 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)

It's ok. I've always thought it was too slow, but the theme is quite Debbie Harry-ish.

I prefer "In Love with Love."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 23 January 2006 12:07 (twenty years ago)

it's about "Lips wide holding you inside" fnarr fnarr.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 23 January 2006 12:08 (twenty years ago)

I'll go out on a limb and suggest it's about french kissing in the USA.

Not really one of Debbie Harry's greatest efforts, is it?

lupine luck, Monday, 23 January 2006 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Classic. My favourite DH solo is, inexplicably, "Brite Side".

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 23 January 2006 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Mine is "I Want That Man."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 23 January 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I was going to mention 'Brite Side'. It was a Chart Show 'Rough Cut'.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 23 January 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Was this written by the Thompson Twins or was that another one?

Shooz (shooz), Monday, 23 January 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

it's no "Kissin' Time" by Bobby Rydell/KISS

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 23 January 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

"I Want That Man" is the Bailey-Currie composition.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 23 January 2006 17:47 (twenty years ago)

I Want That Man was the song written by the Thompson Twins. French Kissin' was written by one Chuck Lorre, who went on to write sitcoms like Roseanne and Cybill, apparently.

"I Want That Man" was her best moment, but not even close to the glorious best moments of the people who wrote the song.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 23 January 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

"I Want That Man" was her best moment

As a solo act, it must be added. :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 23 January 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

not even close to the glorious best moments of the people who wrote the song.

The TT had moments, Geir, one of which was quite excellent ("Hold Me Now"), but none glorious. "I Want That Man" is a TT song sung by a real singer.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 23 January 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

I've always liked Tom Bailey's voice; it's expressive and quite characterful. And Doctor! Doctor! is glorious.

> "I Want That Man" is a TT song sung by a real singer.

There are plenty who consider Debbie Harry's voice to be not all that. I hasten to add that I am not among them, but I will dispute any suggestion that she's a technically superior vocalist to Bailey.

As for the question at the head of the thread, I say classic. One of the decade's dreamiest pop confections.

Palomino (Palomino), Monday, 23 January 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm not talking about "technically": i'm talking about sheer personality, chutzpah, SOUL. I always tear up a little during the last verse beginning with "I wanna be kissed by the man in the very back row, and ending with "But he won't even look me in the eye," which lets the listener know that this woman's scenario -- three minutes' worth -- has been a fiction, the overactive imagination of a lonely woman. Harry makes all this believable.

She's got that husk in her voice which can turn water into wine. Obviously pre-EvitaMadonna took notes.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 23 January 2006 23:31 (twenty years ago)

> i'm talking about sheer personality, chutzpah, SOUL.

Okay, that I will concede. I was actually listening to Blondie yesterday and enjoying the way you can hear in her voice the fullness of the life she's lead.

Palomino (Palomino), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Classic, I love it! I haven't heard In a long time, but I rememeber I used to love how the intro was in a different key or something like that.

For pure cheese I prefer "Communion" off Debravation

I've touched some objects of faith
More precious than pieces of eight
Seen sacred places and ritual ways
But for communion let's go to my place
I learned to pray on my knees
Been taken in hand if you please
Had my own revelations ideas about fate
But for communion let's go to my place
So as the body so as the blood
Sacred as the soul is to love
Don't be mistaken if you don't understand
Divinely simple
Part of the plan
Take
Eat
This is my body
I give it to you
Take
Drink
This is my blood
Do it in remembrance of me so you won't forget me
Now I've been a witness of grace
I stare sacred days in the face
The long long parade of ritual ways
But for communion let's go to my place
Sacred stories are told
They're passed on like pieces of gold
So make your conclusions consider your fate
But for communion let's go to my place
So as the body so as the blood
Sacred as the soul is to love
Don't be mistaken if you don't understand
Divinely simple
Part of the plan
Take
Eat
This is my body
I give it to you
Take
Drink
This is my blood
Do it in remembrance of me so you won't forget me
Are you ready?
Are you ready for communion?

Wow, "Communion" may be my LEAST favorite Deb solo song ever!

"French Kissin'" falls somewhere in the mediocre zone between C and D for me, but the fact that I can't recall much more than the melody of the chorus, even while reading the lyrics, means I should revisit it, I guess.
