What about them?

Gwarkethead Kissidents, Monday, 23 January 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

They wear costumes.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 23 January 2006 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh that's right! I knew it was something.

Gwarkethead Kissidents, Monday, 23 January 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Also, they play music. Often while wearing costumes. Though many of them record their albums out of costumes.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Devo - yes.
Moldy Peaches - yes.
Others - yes.

It's an open and shut case. Bands with PROPER costumes rule.

Often better than the "they wear costumes to detract from their shit abilitity" stereotype.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Some bands wear clothes and you can't tell if it's a costume or not, and those are often very good bands.

SONNY, Monday, 23 January 2006 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Every member of every band is wearing a costume, even (especially?) the ones who perform naked. (What would GG Allin have been without his microphallus?)

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

you've really put your finger on one way of looking at it

SONNY, Monday, 23 January 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

I mean, how do GWAR count as a costumed band and the Ramones don't?

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Ramones dress that way 24-7.

Gwar don't, Monday, 23 January 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Polyphonic Spread make this a shit idea.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but the Ramones definitely dressed that way in an effort to cultivate an image. So, I mean, I see what pdf's saying, but it's not as generalizable as he wants it to be. That word "especially" is what gives it away -- in every act costumes are emphasized to a different degree. "Costume" is one way of understanding what people wear, sure, but it isn't always the relevant way of understanding a performer.

Some people say all the world's a stage, some people just hang out.

Twisted Sister were cool 'cause (unlike Kiss/Crue) even at their commercial peak they treated their silly makeup and spandex as an OPTION, and were as likely as not to switch to basic denim jackets, even within a single video. (And they were easily as UGLY as Kiss, too!)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 23 January 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

otm myonga...i opt to dress in "street" clothes on occasion in my band..as befits th situation..as for uncostumed bands that dress in costume..I've noticed alot of young punk/emo/thrash bands hot topicked to nauseating perfection.

I generally shy away from any band that gets described to me like this: "They're so great -- They all wear (letterman jackets/animal costumes/fake blood/etc.) I have nothing against enhancing the visual appearance of a band in some kind of way that goes with the music, but I can't stand "gimmicky" bands (for lack of a better word). Now you can start deconstructing the term "gimmicky." I'll be in the back corner sleeping.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

i shy away from any bad music, what they are wearing is inconsequential to me,unless all I do is listen to my friends opinions.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:14 (twenty years ago)

xwife:if u mean david letterman jackets, then i guess i do shy away from any douche-wad who puts these on.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm not saying I'd let costumes get in the way of enjoying a very good band, but it seems rare that I come across a band I really like who also happens to wear costumes. I like Devo well enough. I guess Bowie wears "costumes" of sorts. I hate Kiss.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

there are very few good ones, back in th day we wood get asked to play w gwar or voluptuous horror of karen black or lunachicks..and i made an effort to turn them down envisioning th future of it all..altho we did play w lunachicks twice..and now alot of th noixe bands do sum pretty half assed dressing up..i do like thaT fat wom of error tho..

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Taste is funny, isn't it? IMO, Bowie made approximately three listenable albums in a sea of whiney, aimless crap and Devo is about as interesting as a Gary Numan album with all 18 tracks being "Cars." Gwar and Karen Black are fun (sort of) live (I saw them each once) but totally fall flat on their albums. Technodestructo? Neighborachie? Stupid! But, costume-era Kiss is fun to listen to. I guess because they sing about fairly down-to-earth stuff. Cue jokes about raping your girlfriend.

Man with opinions of his own, Monday, 23 January 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Theoretically I dislike cotumes as a concept. I.e I disliked the loveninjas before I even had heard them because I saw this http://www.loveninjas.com/urban-ninjas5.jpg picture of them . And bands like devo really just prove that there is something justified in disliking of bands who fancy a constantly ongoing masquerade. While they have made plenty of music that is brilliant for some purposes (such as dancefloors), they have never really been able to go beyond the boundaries created by their costumes. Their sound has always had something missing, and in it's place there has been the elements representing something irritatingly kitch.

RAMMSTEIN dressed like art deco mummies covered in white powder on their first US tour. And no, I've no idea what that was about.

As I grow older, I find myself increaingly bored by bands that pretend they have found themselves onstage by chance; Some kind of costume is a minimum requirement.

The Hives get it about right; GWAR, Rammstein or Malice Mizer are even better.
