the whitney stuff on the bodyguard ost is pretty great and there was a decent enough 'lovely day' cover right? the 'what so funny' cover was good for a laff in its fashion.

i'm just assuming with bodyguard, it seems like a classic case of single+filler. i'm assuming with bolton as well, not sure if I ever heard anything off of it.

"Aquarium" is unimpeachably good. Get one taste, Geir! Like you can't hum every melody of every single off that sucker.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 05:42 (twenty years ago)

Abbey Road is strickly mediocre and not in the league of Bolton-scale awfulness. For a bunch of overrated douchebags the Eagles had a decent fistful of good songs, a lot more than these guys:
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd100/d138/d1388788hv6.jpg
(even the graphic design says "man the '90s weren't that good")
(and holy shit, they released an album last year?

disco violence (disco violence), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 05:49 (twenty years ago)

o come on hootie's better than matchbox 20! surely we haven't gotten to the part of the thread where we need to drag hootie in yet!

i mean you have to admit a world where hootie lingers and dave matthews drops off the face of the earth would be a better world than this surely right?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 06:00 (twenty years ago)

Lingers like a gently bad fart, perhaps.

is that a momus lyric?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 06:03 (twenty years ago)

to be fair i wasn't actually living in america when hootie mania hit. i heard a bit of it in a dentist's office once and 'let her go' the real rem one etc at bad beq parties though - basically gin blossoms chopped and screwed right?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 06:05 (twenty years ago)

hootie mania hit me when i lived with a usc grad summer of 94 and saw them in a small club packed with usc people drunk off their asses and singing every word

is there a major American artist with more contemporary (well, late 20th century) Africa in their music than the Dave Matthews Band?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 06:18 (twenty years ago)

michael jackson

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 06:20 (twenty years ago)

don't hear much rhumba there. and he isn't particularly major (or even American?) anymore.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 06:44 (twenty years ago)

re: bodyguard OST nick lowe made $1 million in royalties off that album alone. that basically justifies all the rest of the dreck, as far as i'm concerned.

Mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 06:48 (twenty years ago)

so americans buy more hootie and michael bolton than inxs or abba ?

The Ace of Base LP is great! You'd think even Geir would love it because it's chock-full of catchy melodies. Besides, when it comes to Europop cheesiness factor, AoB were pretty low on that (no Euro-rap, for example), if that's what's stopping you from appreciating them.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 08:02 (twenty years ago)

Personally, I love Euro-rap!

I count 3 or 4 fair-to-good LPs here so far! And how anyone can be roused to a frenzy of rage over as inconsequential a nonentity as Hootie has always been a mystery to me, but fuck that. Anyways, I give you:

"Genesis" wasn't really a multi million seller, was it?

Plus it wasn't too bad either - I would say it's their best post-"Duke" album.
I believe "Invisible Touch" and "We Can't Dance" both sold better, and they were also considerably worse.

how many masturbatory sacred cow threads are there on ilx. what does 'worst' mean? it certainly doesn't mean bad, as in musically. the old argument that they wouldn't have sold millions if they were poorly done works here. no, this thread isn't about whether albums are bad or good, it's about whether albums are cool to like in the eyes of the poster. it's about establishing cred on this board. yeah, abbey road is the worst maaan. it's boring! the beatles were overrated! i'm so edgy it hurts!

The two albums at the top of this thread are both great (though Ace of Base's is slightly better in its European *Happy Nation* version.) So are the Huey Lewis and Shania and Eagls ones people pictured. And I have nothing against Juice Newton or Three Doors Down's debut CD at all.

xhuxk, Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Besides, when it comes to Europop cheesiness factor, AoB were pretty low on that (no Euro-rap, for example), if that's what's stopping you from appreciating them.

Like Europop cheesiness didn't exist prior to "Pump Up The Jam"?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:13 (twenty years ago)

I can't really decipher that sentence, what has "Pump up the Jam" have to do with Ace of Base?

It seems that the worst of the second (or third) wave of hair metal (whatever wave came in right before it all went away) petered out at Gold... Trixter, for example... In the context of this thread, thayt's bad. Overall, I guess it was good?
