Stop pretending you don't watch AMERICAN IDOL--discussion thread

I've been posting here for about a year, and I'll never understand all the contempt for American Idol. People here bust their arms patting themselves on the back for their anti-rockism, yet you turn your nose up at the greatest show in the history of TV, which happens to celebrate all things pop.

So all you closet Idol fans, come out and be proud. Discuss here.

I don't pretent, I watch it. Except for last night, I forgot it was on. Maybe it's a guilty pleasure, but OH WHAT A TREAT!

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

The winner is Paris Bennett.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Was Paris Bennett the girl who did the Billie Holiday? If so, and she doesn't win, I'm moving to Europe in protest!

moxie alv., Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Hello, I don't watch it.

Bye.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

The Billie Holiday girl has got to be the favorite so far. The blonde girl from Alabama whose father is in prison is also good.

My favorite moment from this season so far was last week, and it didn't involve singing: This cowboy dude was on for a second, hysterically crying. He said, "They ripped my heart from my chest. Lord how am I still breathing?"

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I liked it when Randy told the girl from New York with the Jewish last name that it sounded like she had a lot of voice lessons.

moxie alv., Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I bet she'll drop the Schwartz if she gets on the show.

Simon is particularly brutal this season. And I'm still waiting to hear RJ tell a girl she can blow. I never get tired of hearing that.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

awesome people from last night:
- dude who held every syllable of "shes out of my life" for 20 seconds
- hott depressed blonde, shown during the "fame" montage
- michael jackson dancer
- billie holiday girl (ann nesby's granddaughter)
- fat blond dude with unexpectedly strong voice that sounded slightly like an awesome voice in reverse

fucking lame people from last night:
- rhonetta (she didnt even ARGUE with paula!)

My wife had an interesting point about Rhonetta...she clearly has serious issues with men. She lashed out against Paula, who was nice to her. But she didn't have anything bad to say about Simon or Randy, who were both brutal. That's the exact personality type that is drawn to abusive mates.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

when she said that stuff about paula's hits being almost 20 years ago, i sort of freaked out. 20 YEARS?? dude, i have 20-year-old pop music memories now. WTFFF

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

don't sleep on those big goatteed memphis twins from last week's show, their shit was TIGHT

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:43 (twenty years ago)

it's been mentioned on the ILE thread, but the dude w.sweatpants and huge pit stains that did a medly of "you know you make me wanna shout!" and a bizarre abstract vers. of MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL BY XTC is the WTF moment of the year!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realize ILM was anti-American Idol. I think there's been long threads for every season.

Last night's ep was the first I've seen this season. I didn't get the fuss about Rhonetta -- the show built up her craziness too much.

Ann Nesby's granddaughter was truly great, and I immediately had visions of her competing in the final 12. Not only does she have the pipes, but she's seriously charming -- you could tell the judges just wanted to hug her to pieces.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

little nesby had a grating speaking voice, i thought. paula said she loved it, but i thought it sounded put-on.

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Also, the thing about the "She's Out of My Life" dude: everyone made a big deal about him not being able to sing, but I actually though his tone was pretty decent, it was just his technique that needed a lot of work. Like he wasn't an innately bad singer -- but nobody told him that singing isn't about holding out every note as long as you can and sort of grunting at the end.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

he did win approximately three talent shows this past year.

moxie alv., Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Also funny was the army guy who danced with Paula, then turns out to be married.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

hahahahahahahahahahahaha - that was awesome.

also intense - that dude who did uncle kracker, and whose gf/wife pulled the class card.

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

so far I've watched more of the early audition episodes this season than I usually do. I don't really like those ones as much as other people seem to, though, for every funny moment there's a lot of boring and unpleasant ones, and making those episodes 2 hours long is impossible to get all the way through. I think it's more fun later when there's people you want to root for and people who suck just enough that you can be mad that they made it that far.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

This season, the auditions are unusually entertaining. Last douple of years they were kind of a bore. For some reason, the people are just stranger this year.

I just wish they showed more of the "Lord how am I still breathing?" I'd buy his album.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I wanna know why Seacrest recorded his voiceovers in an echo chamber.

I might have watched more of this season (maybe 2.5 hours) than I have of all the other seasons combined.

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Watching Idol is a bit of an endurance test. This season, the constant commercial breaks are killing me. I'm not sure how long I will last.

moxie alv., Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

It was a little ridiculous how they teased the tirade from Rhonetta for the whole two hours. That annoyed me. The payoff was kinda weak, too.

I did however like the part where the dude said he learned to sing from Paula's DVD.

don't sleep on those big goatteed memphis twins from last week's show, their shit was TIGHT

They're in jail, aren't they?

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I thought that was his mom.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I don't watch "American Idol". Matter of factly, I don't think there are any TV stations here that show "American Idol". :)

Norwegian "Idol" though, even though I rarely watch that either.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

-- morris pavilion (yndlqls0...), January 25th, 2006.

oh yeah - yr probably right. anyway, it was heavy.

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Norwegian Idol was probably pretty good. You had that guy Kurt who actually won World Idol, a one-off special that was fairly disturbing from a geo-political standpoint.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Hats off to that droopy kid last night who gave "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" a shot.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 26 January 2006 18:04 (twenty years ago)

ha yeah was awesome..

that girl with the mom who's a voice coach will be a big time factor this year i bet.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 January 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, she seems like a finalist for sure.

These audition shows are so ridiculously entertaining... one hour doesn't even feel like enough.

Where it gets boring for me is after they've weeded the big chunks of people out, America starts voting, and you have to root for certain folks to stay invested.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 26 January 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

simon's hissy fit was also entertaining!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 January 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...

A horrible Sunday lunch, some ghastly hotel, and an elocution lesson...

Were there any others? I didn't watch the entire show.

moxie alvarez, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Patrick needs to win so his mom can get more collagen in her lips.

Two words for the UK non-viewers: Trout pout. (or Leslie Ash, you decide)

gspm (gspm), Thursday, 23 February 2006 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I admit that the auditions are some of the best television you can see, but the whole competition means fuck all.All the winners just basically dissapear, except for Kelly Clarkson of course she's managed to stick around somehow. Plus the runners up get just as much attention as the winners. Worth it for the auditions alone, those crazy people are REAL!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Thursday, 23 February 2006 05:46 (twenty years ago)

(just to correct myself, i was informed that it wasn't Patrick's mom. The people were labelled as Patrick's friends).

I'm rooting for ol' grey-hair.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Those show choir boys need to can it, pronto.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

What was up with crooner dude? Sounded like he was making fun of the song, or like me singing in my Dr. Strangelove voice, kinda.

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Based on last night alone, Kellie Pickler should go home. She was by far the worst. But she's been great before and is very likable so that won't happen.

It's probably gonna be a guy eliminated, either Bucky Covington (who actually was pretty good) or Kevin, the little skinny guy.

I'm getting tired of Paris, she's been all downhill since her first audition.

As I go, so goes America.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 25 May 2006 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Greatest show in the history of TV? That's quite a statement, and one that I certainly simply cannot agree with. I'm one of those people for whom pretty much all reality TV is garbage.

Just my opinion though, and sorry to be off topic. For the record (no pun intended) I tried to watch it once and made it to the first commercial before simply turning off the TV and listening to tunes.
