There's nothing worse than a keyboard sound that sucks. But what are the great ones? I nominate:

1. Why Can't We Live Together by Timmy Thomas
2. Stereolab on Mars Audiac Qunitet
3. The Prisoners' Jamie Taylor (Hammond)

Whenever I press my fist down on a bunch of keys at the same time, a lovely ripe *blip* come from the hard drive.

Owen, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:10 (twenty years ago)

what was that song from an ozzy osbourne's album, i think, 'no more tears', with a long fabulous piano solo, closer to the end of the album?

i bought the album solely for that piano.

ps: the guys must have some nice VSTs, huh? ha ha.

nique (nique), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

That song from Prodigy's Music For The Jilted Generation... I used to like that one... back in the day. Years since I've listened to it...

elgolfo (elgolfo), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

you mean the one that goes 'you're no good for me, i don't want nobody??'

dr xoskillet, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Since Dr. X chose three, I will too:

1.Velvet Underground, "Sister Ray" (white-noise nuclear-meltdown organ by John Cale)
2.Funkadelic, "Loose Booty" (Bernie Worrell's sproingy Hohner Clavinet(?)-thru-wah wah)
3.Edgar Winter, "Frankenstein" (extremely volatile ARP 2600 eruptions)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

"Edgar Winter, "Frankenstein" (extremely volatile ARP 2600 eruptions)"

His performance of this tune on the Old Grey Whistle Test DVD is hilariously awesome - he takes four solos on four separate instruments.

Wha? How can there be any doubt about this?

SUPERSTITION, BITCHES.

With honorable mentions to the PPG waveterm sound in Steve Winwood's "While You See a Chance," and the Mitchell Froom's Mellotronish chirpy organ on those Crowded House tracks. There is freedom within, there is freedom without...

The Mad Puffin, Thursday, 26 January 2006 02:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and the celesta or whatever it is on "In My Life," played then speeded up by Sir George Martin.

vestal virgins, Thursday, 26 January 2006 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Aphex Twin's "Xtal" is wonderfully warm and low-fi

There are a million better ones that I'm not thinking of though

KEEP MUSIC LIVE

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

The keyboard sound in Magazine's "My Tulpa" is a favorite of mine, as are those gloriously out-of-tune horn samples in the Human League's "(Keep Feeling) Fascination".

D.V. Caputo, Friday, 27 January 2006 10:20 (twenty years ago)

MVB OTM about #1

And RYE-OTT's entire list is equally OTM 'Specially that Dylan track and its THREE distinct kbds!

Ooh, and then there's that track on the Human Beinz '68 Evolutions LP in which they completely demolish a piano live in the studio.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 27 January 2006 11:34 (twenty years ago)

I've often praised it here, but I think Herbie Hancock's Sextant has some of the coolest early synth and electric keyboard sounds, especially on "Rain Dance". And Miles Davis' "Shh/Peaceful" is probably one of the greatest moments of the electric piano, especially the interplay between it and the electric organ.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:26 (twenty years ago)

what about the organ on "he loved him madly" from get up with it?

xavier mcshane (xave), Friday, 27 January 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Hancock rocketh. But you knew that.

The Mad Puffin, Friday, 27 January 2006 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Japan "Still Life In Mobile Homes" and pretty much anything off of Tin Drum.

David Sylvian "Maria"

The Entirety of Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Lack of Love" Game Score

Early King Crimson or anything featuring a Mellotron

Robert Rich's trademark "Glurg" and "Shimmer"

Cliftonb, Saturday, 28 January 2006 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Sakamoto's (Sylvian's?) Fairlight reed sounds on "Bamboo Houses"

Vangelis' trademark CS-80 string pad

Vangelis' trademark CS-80 melting giant trumpet sound

Derrick May's Yamaha DX-100

The Mellotron

More suggestions...

Herbie Hancock: Mr. Hands. In it Herbie decides he doesn't really need a band, so besides some guest drummers, bassists and guitarists he plays most of the stuff himself on keyboards - including such things as synth guitars and synth steel drums. This was released in 1980, and you can hear the change from funky keyboard sounds of the 70's to the colder, smoother sound of the 80's, but if you can get past the plasticness (or if, like me, you love plastic), this is a great LP.

Planet Patrol: Planet Patrol. This is the epitome of old school electro maximalism. The variety of funky, cool, weird and absurd synth sounds, combined with the five-piece vocal group, makes this probably the best electro funk LP I've ever heard. They even cover Gary Glitter, and it sounds great!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 28 January 2006 08:29 (twenty years ago)

Also kool: The Beatles, "Baby You're A Rich Man" and its clavioline. Or maybe ondioline? (Unsure.)

Myonga Von Bontempi (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 28 January 2006 08:35 (twenty years ago)

It has to be said sooner or later: "96 Tears," for chrissakes. Will return with more thoughts on this later.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 28 January 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah the 60s had some great ones.

The Swingin' Medallions - Double Shot Of My Baby's Love
The Rivieras - California Sun
Booker T & The MGs - Green Onions
Del Shannon - Runaway
Beach Boys - California Girls

To name a few.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 29 January 2006 03:23 (twenty years ago)

Steppenwolf, Magic Carpet Ride (the drone/growl shit esp).

Deep Purple, Rat Bat Blue -- the solo with organ and synth together, or whatever the fuck it is. So rad.

Any good recording of Steve Reich, Piano Phase.

Rod Argent's pianet.

The entire recorded output of the Vox Continental, with special nod to Augie Meyers.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Sunday, 29 January 2006 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Kool and the Gang, Summer Madness.

The Fall, Shoulder Pads.

Soft Machine, Third.

Any Booker T organ sound from before 1975.

Any Meters song from before 1979, but esp on the Josie records.

Larry Young, Unity and Love and Peace.

Fats Waller's organ -- some kind of Hammond, no doubt.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Sunday, 29 January 2006 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Burning Spear, Marcus Garvey.

Dave "Baby" Cortez, The Happy Organ.

The Wendigo, Gimme Some Lovin.

Spencer Davis Group, I'm a Man.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Sunday, 29 January 2006 03:40 (twenty years ago)

Someone else already said Runaway, so I'm going to bed.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Sunday, 29 January 2006 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Maybe this is a little off-topic, but could someone refer me to some records that prominently use the Poly Evolver? Sounds sort of like the Megadrive (Sega) sound engine to me, which is cool for the kind of music I do. I'd like to hear what this thing is really capable of.
