And was this technology used for more than just country and classic rock? Did indie labels release eight tracks?

"Indie labels" in the DIY punk/postpunk sense didn't really exist in the heyday of 8tracks (just before punk). Tim is right, many small labels did 8 trax but the format was already fading by 1977.

But in 1975, the peak year of 8 track popularity, this clunky format accounted for 25% of all recorded music sales in the USA. It never caught on outside the US and the best (only?) explanation is that 8 Trax were very easy to use in the car.
