Okay, well, I attempted to use the Search function six times and it kept saying it was too busy, so if this was already mentioned, tough noodles.

An article on the Guardian today discusses it, but here's the skinny:

Tyler Wilcox (tylerw), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:04 (twenty years ago)

His "Ca Plane Pour Moi" cover is classic.

i feel a consumer urge.

Sadly, at least a quick glance, I can't see anything from either of the fabulous albums he did with John French, Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser.

More curiously 'though, I can't see anything from last year's Front Parlour Ballads.

That's true, those are due for a reissue.

I can live without something from Front Parlour Ballads, however, considering this collection is supposed to plunder the depths of Thompson's personal archive all the way back to Fairport's origins.

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Thursday, 26 January 2006 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I missed the bit about it being "made up almost entirely of previously unreleased and extremely hard to find recordings", that explains a lot.

Is that The Who's Substitute?

"Now That I Am Dead" (disc 1, track 1) is on the 2nd FFKT album.

Must...have...this

Is that The Who's Substitute?
The latest MOJO accompanying CD of Who covers has him doing "A Legal Matter"- one of the better things on there.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Is that the one from 1000 Years of Popular Music? Cos yes, that is pretty good, as is the whole album.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Apparently it is.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I had heard the Who do A Legal Matter loads of times, but I had never understood it, or tried to, till I heard the Richard Thompson version on that CD.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

"Dear Janet Jackson" is really funny.

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I do not like these box comps that jump all around chronologically.

That said, it looks pretty fascinating.

sleeve (sleeve), Thursday, 26 January 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

It's from the same people that did the awesome Sandy Denny box set last year, as well, so major points for them.

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:32 (twenty years ago)

the artwork on this thing is totally hideous
