Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:18 (twenty years ago)

haha as i just told matos, 50 bucks says the 'mtv grassroots manager' starts lurking/posting on ilm within three days of getting hired

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:18 (twenty years ago)

so is this "weird" just because it's related to music or something? if it was a posting for general mills or toyota would it seem so "weird"?

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:20 (twenty years ago)

I've been trying to sell Momus records by making postings to ILM for five years now, and I can tell MTV that it doesn't work at all. Go back to playing music videos, boys, that's my tip! (Extreme, I know...)

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:20 (twenty years ago)

marketing shills in liking that green shocker

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:20 (twenty years ago)

It's kind of weird in that I thought street teams were high schoolers who worked for zip in exchange for schwag, but what do I know about the fast-paced world of online marketing?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:23 (twenty years ago)

very little or you'd be making more money/killed and eaten by your successor already

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:24 (twenty years ago)

"you can destroy me, but two more will take my place"

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure there's acres of money to be made here, just like there was during the first internet-marketing boom

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:27 (twenty years ago)

i have no idea what "mtvU" and "UBER" are--MTV Uruguay and German MTV, respectively? I liked German MTV quite a bit when I was living in Berlin, actually.

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:31 (twenty years ago)

I demand Ned apply for this job.

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:32 (twenty years ago)

large corporation in marketing-on-the-web shockah.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:32 (twenty years ago)

it's not a shockah so much as a rofl

'• Strong relationships with appropriate online communities including social networking sites, blogs, fansites, lifestyle sites and other communities'

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:33 (twenty years ago)

mtvu is mtv's channel that gets broadcasted to college dorms; uber is its online-only sibling.

maura (maura), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:33 (twenty years ago)

anyway, anyone who thinks this isn't a standard marketing position ad with language specific to its purpose is just being disingenuous. it's only funny/"weird" cuz it happens to be our little blue heaven rather than the widget makers of the world.

xpost.

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:33 (twenty years ago)

I demand Ned apply for this job.

But I hate people!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Besides, you created a funny student short, not me. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:34 (twenty years ago)

come on, don't you want to be the guy who sets loose the link-waving rats on the music boards?

Hey!

This new band El Kabong just did an awesome interview on MTV.com!

http://www.mtv.com/elkabong/awesomeinterview.wav

I think they're really good. You?

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

You could yell 'FLY MY PRETTIES! FLY!' after every bulk e-mail

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:38 (twenty years ago)

But I hate people!

OK, great! Now work with that! Make everyone into it!

Corporate-speak is always fun to mock, Jess

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:40 (twenty years ago)

anyway, anyone who thinks this isn't a standard marketing position ad with language specific to its purpose is just being disingenuous. it's only funny/"weird" cuz it happens to be our little blue heaven rather than the widget makers of the world.

The reason why it's "weird" is because the sellability of the "commodity" is based on a lot of subjectivity, and it doesn't necessarily take someone with an MBA to do this.. whereas a similar position trying to market cars, and "widgets" is because those often require some expertise into the attributes, histories, and future development of those widgets.. which may require either a lot more experience or a lot of education or both.

It helps with selling music and pop culture too of course, but people rarely need to offer a fully pimped out job description to get somebody to get the job and do enough of a good job. "A tool" in our world could do this job.. "A tool" may not work out for GM or whomever, though.

Then again, I've never pursued marketing as a career, so take what I said with a cheap mustard seed and all that.

Dom iNut (donut), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:44 (twenty years ago)

The job just doesn't sound like much fun--publicity is thankless enough work as is, much less with an experimental branch of a corporate monolith breathing down your neck.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:47 (twenty years ago)

"WHY ARE WE NOT FAMOUS ON LINE?"

"...sir?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:48 (twenty years ago)

The job just doesn't sound like much fun--publicity is thankless enough work as is, much less with an experimental branch of a corporate monolith breathing down your neck.

Well, maybe it sounds fun to that Action Rock A&R Dude In NYC whose fabulous mug was posted here once. Where the fuck is he now?

Dom iNut (donut), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:50 (twenty years ago)

Hey!

He's checking out this hot new bad called Gladarm 15. I think they're great, they remind me of Seether but a little more rock. Here's their mp3. What do you think?

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:53 (twenty years ago)

I want this job so bad.

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:55 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to think that I could help some bands get the attention they deserve.

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:55 (twenty years ago)

I'd still run my blog, though. That's not for sale. But in order to fight the power you must master it.

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:56 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to think that I could help some bands get the attention they deserve.

how much attention would that be?

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 26 January 2006 05:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking of a medium buzz, a few key blogs to reaffirm personal connection, then saturating if the second single has a successful impact.

"Doyle has embraced the multiplatform strategy and has strived to find non- traditional ways to showcase music. She has pioneered many of MTV's music initiatives including negotiating with bands like Good Charlotte to create series theme songs, enlisting hip hop artists to star in "Real World" promo campaigns, introducing soundtrack guides on MTV.com, shepherding "The Leak" for MTV.com and extending it to wireless and linear, and migrating emerging artists like Matisyahu and Death Cab for Cutie from mtvU to MTV."

Amazing!

New Structure Enhances Music Network's Ability to Develop and Deliver Dynamic Content for Audiences Across All Screens

NEW YORK and SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Christina Norman, President, MTV and Brian Graden, President of Entertainment, MTV Networks Music Group and President of Logo, today announced a radical new organizational structure for MTV that will allow the network to deliver even more aggressively on its multiplatform strategy. The strategy revolves around building an engaging universe of music, entertainment, news, community and interactivity that allows the audience access to content whenever and wherever they want across a mix of platforms. The new structure will optimally position MTV to develop and distribute the most compelling, cutting-edge, dynamic and creative programming to all screens, while connecting more viewers than ever to the music and entertainment they love.

Moving forward, MTV's operations will revolve around two new, highly-integrated ecosystems. One will be aligned around the development of short-form video, music and news content for linear television as well as for online, VOD, broadband, wireless and other digital vehicles. The other will focus on maintaining and growing MTV's leadership position in the television arena through the continued development of successful long-form franchises, many of which define today's youth culture.

In making this announcement, Christina Norman said, "When I returned to MTV last year, we had entered the broadband era with MTV Overdrive to great critical and user acclaim and were developing unique new wireless entertainment while our linear channel was performing better than ever." She added, "In order to continue strengthening our connection to young people in today's digital age, it became clear that we needed to adapt our organizational structure in the same way we have always adapted our programming to meet our audiences' ever-changing tastes."

Brian Graden said, "By elevating all platforms to equal footing, we have created a 21st Century matrix for how we will develop and distribute content and connect with our audience." He added, "The creation of these two highly intertwined universes within MTV will allow us to efficiently extend our world class content-development machine across all screens, as well as position us as entertainment leaders on all platforms."

veronica moser (veronica moser), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:44 (twenty years ago)

haha this sounds like string theory:

By elevating all platforms to equal footing, we have created a 21st Century matrix for how we will develop and distribute content....the creation of these two highly intertwined universes within MTV will allow us to efficiently extend our world class content-development machine

three weeks pass...
i'm not sure about all other mtv's, but looks like a friend of mine (who worked first at universal then at sony-bmg) got this very job at MTV russia, here in moscow.

because, as i was told, mtv want to start a record label to release all their top tens, twenties, forties, and also other stuff that was described as "special projects".

so go figure...
maybe it's just our russian local shit.
