T/S: People Like Us V. Byrds (s/t) (or, are these reviled comeback records not so bad ?)

Ok, 60s folk-rock heroes come back in early 70s for one-off reunions that were widely hated on intitial release (and they give the impression of being quick cash-ins). And neither is a classic, not close. BUT, hearing them now without the intense anticipation of 30+ years ago, they have some decent tunes and a nice mellow vibe that is not unpleasant (faint praise, but I don't want to oversell the modest charms of these records). Gene Clark is very well represented on the BYRDS disc, and that's always good, and his erstwhile squeeze Michelle gets a more prominent role on PEOPLE (and former central figures McGuinn & Mama Cass are curiously shoved to the back). Why Stereolab has never covered Shooting Star is a mystery, it seems like a perfect fit..... Anyways, where is the love???

I quite enjoyed PEOPLE LIKE US and thought it was their most cohesive album. You're right about the nice mellow vibe and the "modest charms". I don't favor as much the Byrds S/T, but anyway, the love is here.

eleven years pass...

Listening to 'Byrds' now and find it surprising how badly received it was at the time. It's no 'Sweetheart at the Rodeo' or 'Younger Than Yesterday', but as a slice of post-Laurel Canyon country tinged rock it more than holds it's own.
