not to turn this board into BabyCenter, but for those of you with children, what bands/songs that you love has your child taken a shine to?

I ask because my little one just shy of a year is doing crazy shoulder dances to Gang of Four right now.

Other things he's loved:

animal collective (no surprise)
mantronix - bassline 12"
the pigpen side of live/dead

hates: free jazz or anything too dissonant

ziti sanskrit (sanskrit), Saturday, 28 January 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

My 3-year-old daughter, too, enjoys Animal Collective. Also Bjork.

She freaked me out the other day in the car by identifying The Fall. I wasn't sure how I felt about her until then, I have decided she can stay.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Saturday, 28 January 2006 14:02 (twenty years ago)

that rules. but can she do a Mark E. Smith voice yet? start her early.

ziti sanskrit (sanskrit), Saturday, 28 January 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

With a mouth full of apple sauce she does an incredible Mark E. Smith c.2006

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Saturday, 28 January 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

My 3-year-old daughter loves "Hollaback Girl" and Indigo Girls.

I'm going to go tell her she's not indie enough and lock her in her room with LCD Soundsystem. (The rarer stuff.)

WAIT...she also ADORES "Frontier Psychiatrist" by the Avalanches.

Dan Zane

Oh NO!

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 28 January 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

STORY THAT IS ACTUALLY TRUE, swear on my life: Less than a year ago, passively paying attention to Noggin channel, Dan Zanes singing something about loving your smile. Said aloud to wife that he looks/sounds like he was probably in a marginal sorta-alternative band from the late '80s/early '90s, like... mmm, maybe the Del Fuegos. Then I looked him up on the internet.

Roughly 1.5-year-old son tends to like anything with handclaps. He'll clap, shake his head up and down, and occasionally stomp around. Minnie Riperton's Lovin' You is a magic spell whenever he's fussy in the car.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 28 January 2006 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Sterling's mostly into Krautrock and stuff from the Nurse With Wound list these days. Ten months old and more fun every day, although his eBay habits are getting to be problematic.

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 28 January 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Heh. From the other side, one of the anecdotes frequently trotted out is how when I was just barely verbal, I loved a song by the Motor City Mutants whose chorus was "Fuck fuck fuck it up, fuck fuck fuck it up good," and used to chant it around the house.

js (honestengine), Saturday, 28 January 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

My nine month old loves rhythm, percussion and sharp sounds like acoustic guitars or banjo. He and I listen to XTC all the time, not only to dance around but to help him get to sleep; he loves the guitars and rhythms on English Settlement. Lately, we've also been listening to John Fahey when I rock him to sleep.

We saw a live bluegrass band at a farmer's market this summer and he was mesmerized. I want to take him to see more live music.

Hm, you weren't kidding.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 January 2006 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I've avoided imposing any "cool" music on my 1 year old, but in the last few months, he's discovered my LPs and has been bringing them for me to play in the mornings. His selections have been a fairly mixed bag of experimental, free jazz, pop, etc and so far his favorites seem to be Cheap Trick and Elton John, though he did a really interesting dance to a Joe McPhee solo sax record once. Oh, and in the car, he likes the Wizard of Oz soundtrack.

Sour Patch Kid, Sunday, 29 January 2006 01:38 (twenty years ago)

My 2 year old niece mostly listens to kids music, but I've made CDs for her that she likes, and it seems she gets a big kick out of Gorillaz, Dixie Chicks, & Belle and Sebastian.

What she really likes is the itunes Visualizer, put on *anything*, turn on the visualizer, and she'll sit entranced for a good ten or twenty minutes. (For a toddler, that's light years.)

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 29 January 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

our 1-yr.-old gets excited by music, period. he likes big walloping beats (who doesn't?), but almost anything will get big smiles and an approximation of dancing.

his favorite song, tho, judging from his pavlovian reaction, is the theme to "jack's big music show" (which i'm a pretty big fan of myself).

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 29 January 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

when I was just barely verbal, I loved a song by the Motor City Mutants whose chorus was "Fuck fuck fuck it up, fuck fuck fuck it up good,"

hahaha. those Mutants also had a song called "Piece O'Shit" that could've been a handy toilet-training anthem.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Sunday, 29 January 2006 19:59 (twenty years ago)

well, just you wait: i have two daughters--a 15-year-old Opeth and Lamb of God fan, and a 13-year-old Fallout Boy and Click 5 fanatic..

nerve pylon (flat_of_angles), Sunday, 29 January 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I wish I'd been into the really outside music that I like now, back when the kiddo was tiny. All I listened to back then was fairly standard rock, pop and jazz. It would be cool to have a baby or toddler around to sonically experiment on with NWW, LaMonte Young, deep dub, L. Subramaniam, SAW II, Fripp & Eno, Dark Magus, etc.

But one thing that she loved, which I recommend really highly, is Pete Seeger's Children's Concert at Town Hall.

There was an article about this very thing in the NYT Magazine today. Some quotes...

"There was also a number from the ubiquitous Dan Zanes, the frosty-haired, drippy-voiced Woody Guthrie for kids of parents who want to think they still know something about music but would be secretly happy listening to nothing but Norah Jones for the rest of their lives."

"After more than a year of Music Hours, Elijah was truly ready to rock. I reviewed my collection carefully and decided on the Hives. The songs are short, loud, silly, melodic, and not particularly complicated. The instinct proved instantly correct. When Howlin' Pelle Almquist opened the song with a gutteral scream, Elijah recognized the sound from direct experience and howled back. He began to flap his arms and run in a circle.
"That's good, Elijah. You're rocking out!"
"Rock out! Rock out! Thunder music, Daddy! This is thunder!"

great thread, btw. my nephews (3 and 5) like Dan Zanes a lot, but also most rap and disco, "the funky" as they call it.

sleeve (sleeve), Monday, 30 January 2006 02:09 (twenty years ago)

My 21 month old son likes The Shaggs and Reggaeton, naturally.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Monday, 30 January 2006 03:42 (twenty years ago)

the NRBQ kids' album is also a fave: You're Nice People You Are

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 30 January 2006 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Dan Zanes had a rapper with him when he played at the Methodist Campground Tabernacle here last summer. And Dan himself is rockin' some sorta unique look these days.

Cyrus is only 8 months old and he kinda likes everything. he's a very happy baby. he has had to listen to lots of death metal in his short life. we'll see what that does...

Rufus is 3 and he has started his own band, The Dukes Of Hazzard Playtex Plays Band. He likes having band practice. It's a pick-up band. Basically whoever he can get into his room. rufus doesn't like monster music (metal), he likes country a lot. country involving trucks.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 January 2006 03:54 (twenty years ago)

hahaha. those Mutants also had a song called "Piece O'Shit" that could've been a handy toilet-training anthem.

Yeah, he listened to that too, but the chorus isn't quite so identifiable to a two or three year old. I had to remix that tape.

So what to the kids listen to? The baby boy listens to Jurassic 5 and Slum Village a lot. The older onw listens to my free jazz--he dances to Joe McPhee, too! (Did I mention that he's 26? and that the baby is 23?)

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Monday, 30 January 2006 04:08 (twenty years ago)

MP3 of one of my niece's favorite songs:
Mail myself to you - John Mccutcheon

And other free MP3 of a song she loves:
Grandfather's Clock - Joe Weed

I like both of those, they're beautiful.

lyra (lyra), Monday, 30 January 2006 05:01 (twenty years ago)

i know for a fact that Douglas' kid likes the Ida "your are my flower" record, because Douglas is extolling it's virtues (right below Ethan Hawke) on the cdbaby website! (I looked this up as an alternative to the terrible cd of horrible lullabyes that our friend just gave us; her husband bemoaned that it didn't come with a gun to shoot yourself with)

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 30 January 2006 06:13 (twenty years ago)

I played all kinds of stuff for Miles when he was a baby but I'm not sure how much registered. First song he visibly responded to was "My Cherie Amour" and first album REM's Automatic for the People.

As his own taste in music developed, a tatse for female voices came to the fore. Pink was his first obsession, followed by Averil Lavigne (her poster's still on the wall but she seems to have dropped from the playlist), a mercifully brief fling with Hilary Duff, the surprisingly not-bad Michelle Branch and for awhile the bland rock of Matchbox 20, Train and 3 Doors Down. These days approaching the decade-old mark, No Doubt/Gwen perservere as favorites, also Green Day and Coldplay and lots of Top 40 radio. He also likes R&B and reggaeton but vehemently dislikes hip-hop.

He also takes guitar lessons, sings in a chorus and writes his own songs. Current "project" is a band called Rampage 14.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 30 January 2006 11:05 (twenty years ago)

I don't really play that much music on my two year old, mostly cos my wife can't stand most of what I like, but I know he gets pretty excited by 'The Robots' by Kraftwerk and also some stuff off James Brown's 'In The Jungle Groove'.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 30 January 2006 11:20 (twenty years ago)

I recommend the Kraftwerk DVD, the visuals are ideal for tiny tots (falling vitamin pills, etc), plus they get to learn about nuclear reactors.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 30 January 2006 11:21 (twenty years ago)

My 3-yr old Jude is fond of singing I Can See for Miles by the WHo, Shout to the TOp by the Style Council, Victoria by the Kinks and Show Me the Way to Armadillo. His all time fave remains I Get Around by the Beach Boys.

dr x o'skeleton, Monday, 30 January 2006 11:32 (twenty years ago)

My 11 year old nipper's current rave is Maroon 5's This love, which he got me to download for him. Other than a hatred of Girls Aloud, which I love to torture him with, he's not really into music much. He's a lot more interested in archaelogy, World War 2 and White Dwarf.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 30 January 2006 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Isn't the theme from Jack's Big Music new lyrics set atop Jonathan Richman's "New England," or is that another song on the show?

I see that Zane-y kids rocker walking around the neighborhood from time to time- the last time I saw him he was wearing a white yachting cap. Usually I see him and think- OMG, I forgot to comb my hair!

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Monday, 30 January 2006 13:28 (twenty years ago)

My 15 month old loves Paul Wall (always does the head bob in his car seat) and Pet Shop Boys really seem to soothe him in just the right way during eating. He will also do a fine hip shake (accompanied by and adorable looks of approval) during Kiss Me Again. Of course as someone stated above, anything particularly percussive works. Deaf Center (unsurprisingly) puts him to sleep mighty quickly.
