Helios Creed C/D

Yes, I searched... Two threads, one looking for pych rock that approximates Creed and another talking about a (then) new disc. I'm learning...

Helios Creed is one of my favorite guitarists. I consider him unfairly unappreciated amongst the guitar institute set, mostly because he's too damn weird for them (much like the guy from Melt Banana is unappreciated by the guitar set because he's too damn insane for them) but that in no way takes away from his innovative use of six strings (and eleventy billion and six effects pedals).

I'll concede that some of his stuff around the time Nik Turner got his claws into him lacked the energy of his best works. But when he was on - Superior Catholic Finger, his solo debut X-Rated Fairy Tales and even the comperatively recent On the Dark Side of the Sun - he made some of the best psych-rock music around with enough meat on them that punks and metalheads took notice (or at least they should have). And as much as I love Chrome and realize that that group was the launching pad for HC, it's at least as good as the Chrome stuff, even the classic shit.

Pet Peeve: Record stores that have his stuff under "H."

The AmRep stuff is great. Hilarious but good, if you get my drift...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 January 2006 19:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Saw him live on a UK tor - must have been a decade ago. Amazing. One of those 'is all that sound coming from one guy' performances. Had a row of mikes for different vocal effects.

Audience? About 60 of us. He should really be playing Instal and art-rock weekenders of that ilk.

Soukesian, Saturday, 28 January 2006 20:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Mark Prindle has a pretty comprehensive discog on his infamous review website.

Classic: Last Laugh, Boxing The Clown, Kiss To The Brain.

Then I stopped listening as much and fell totally behind.

Never liked the Subterranean records as much, but they sure ain't duds.

My favorite Helios album is Last Laugh, but I also lurve Boxing the Clown, Retro Transmission (with the Stench Brothers) and Activated Condition. He is my favorite guitarist as well! He loves his space drugs! I can't wait to see him on tour (if I ever do)!
Have you seen his Myspace?

LoneNut, Saturday, 28 January 2006 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Yep, I got wasted with him on the last tour. He bought me beer, got me stoned, we hung out the rest of the night and eventually crashed. Pretty cool guy if the one night is any indication, but a great musician. I love Helios Creed and Chrome. Practically all of it is good.

sim story to collars....we played two shows w him in rochester and coney island high..it was just him and a gf keyb player..and he had a funny hat..didnt look like much ..till he turned on th knobs on..then it made sense..fried frazzled jetlagged from his hawaiian flight,,he blew sum kids away..when we plyed nyc he kept lighting joints and sticking them in my mouth while we were onstage..very sweet guy and really under looked..hope he makes more

Does he still live in a schoolbus parked next to Golden gate park?

Serge Protecteur (nordicskilla), Saturday, 28 January 2006 21:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I heard he lives in Kansas or something like that.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Saturday, 28 January 2006 21:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I think he was under house arrest for 'terroristic threatening', if I remember his interview with Prindle. He also said he had given up drugs in that one, so maybe it should be taken with a grain of salt...

LoneNut, Saturday, 28 January 2006 22:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I always liked talking to him because his left eye would kind of wander...

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Saturday, 28 January 2006 22:38 (fifteen years ago) link

classic!

I'd love to see him jam with Keiji Haino

two months pass...
one of the bands i play in opened for helios creed on saturday night, they played as a 4-piece w/ 2 guitars, bass, drums. started off a bit rough, but got pretty psychedelic and cool by the end. the other guitar player played a keytar at one point. they did some chrome songs too, i think. (haven't heard much chrome, can't be sure)

fucking classic. i like all the chrome shit and i have last laugh which, like a ride on a tilt a whirl, is kinda disorienting, but fun nonetheless.

artdamages, Saturday, 10 March 2007 03:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Classic indeed

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Saturday, 10 March 2007 03:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Kiss to the Brain is his only album I have (besides Chrome stuff) and I don't like it.

abanana, Saturday, 10 March 2007 03:24 (fourteen years ago) link

ALL CLASSIC!!

I have all his records, incredible live. A master.

Saxby D. Elder, Saturday, 10 March 2007 05:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Damn! The post-Instal fest atttendee's survey had a space for 'acts you'd like to see', and I forgot to mention Helios Creed.

Soukesian, Saturday, 10 March 2007 10:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Helios/Chrome is perhaps the best accompaniment to a Nitrous session.
It's a shame so much is out of print.

X-Rated Fairytales = awesomeness

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 4 December 2008 12:44 (twelve years ago) link

Love the peak Edge/Creed Chrome stuff (basically Half Machine & Alien OST, plus a few strays from elsewhere), and root for HxCx as a hero from way back, but I don't think I've ever really LOVED his solo stuff. Fried as it is, it always seems too boxed-in, self-contained, satisfied to operate within a predefined set of limits. A bit freeze-dried, I mean. Live show goes the other way, like Spinal Tap on a beer budget, but occasionally spectacular. Best are probably the first few AmRep records, Lactating Purple has some lovely, subdued moments.

contenderizer, Thursday, 4 December 2008 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

For some reason it really tickles me that Helios Creed's real name is apparently Barry.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 22 April 2017 20:42 (four years ago) link

The Chrome Box is totally awesome, and I'm looking forward to see Chrome play next week

sarahell, Saturday, 22 April 2017 21:07 (four years ago) link

I went to what I think was the first ever Chrome gig in the UK in 2014, was great.

I'm FB friended with him. (He sent me the request.) He is, to put it delicately, not aging well mentally. One of his sons posts to his page all of the time to try to talk some sense into him.

Are either you or he FB friends with Jim Reid?

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 15 April 2021 23:06 (three weeks ago) link

No.

Of the Mary Chain? I know people who are.

Yeah. We discussed on a J&MC thread after I got a friend recommendation for him.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:14 (three weeks ago) link

And what's that got to do with Helios Creed acting like a tit?

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:23 (three weeks ago) link

Nothing. Just going off on a tangent about being FB friends with well-known musicians.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:32 (three weeks ago) link

I thought you were looking for reassurance Jim Reid wasn't a tit as well.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:35 (three weeks ago) link

Frankly I am afraid to ask.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:38 (three weeks ago) link

I wouldn't worry, he seems a sensible chap.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:39 (three weeks ago) link

So you are saying I should friend him?

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:44 (three weeks ago) link

Sure.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:44 (three weeks ago) link

You'd be surprised how often they accept.
