Yes, I searched... Two threads, one looking for pych rock that approximates Creed and another talking about a (then) new disc. I'm learning...

Helios Creed is one of my favorite guitarists. I consider him unfairly unappreciated amongst the guitar institute set, mostly because he's too damn weird for them (much like the guy from Melt Banana is unappreciated by the guitar set because he's too damn insane for them) but that in no way takes away from his innovative use of six strings (and eleventy billion and six effects pedals).

I'll concede that some of his stuff around the time Nik Turner got his claws into him lacked the energy of his best works. But when he was on - Superior Catholic Finger, his solo debut X-Rated Fairy Tales and even the comperatively recent On the Dark Side of the Sun - he made some of the best psych-rock music around with enough meat on them that punks and metalheads took notice (or at least they should have). And as much as I love Chrome and realize that that group was the launching pad for HC, it's at least as good as the Chrome stuff, even the classic shit.

Pet Peeve: Record stores that have his stuff under "H."

Saw him live on a UK tor - must have been a decade ago. Amazing. One of those 'is all that sound coming from one guy' performances. Had a row of mikes for different vocal effects.

Audience? About 60 of us. He should really be playing Instal and art-rock weekenders of that ilk.

Classic: Last Laugh, Boxing The Clown, Kiss To The Brain.

Then I stopped listening as much and fell totally behind.

Never liked the Subterranean records as much, but they sure ain't duds.

My favorite Helios album is Last Laugh, but I also lurve Boxing the Clown, Retro Transmission (with the Stench Brothers) and Activated Condition. He is my favorite guitarist as well! He loves his space drugs! I can't wait to see him on tour (if I ever do)!

Yep, I got wasted with him on the last tour. He bought me beer, got me stoned, we hung out the rest of the night and eventually crashed. Pretty cool guy if the one night is any indication, but a great musician. I love Helios Creed and Chrome. Practically all of it is good.

sim story to collars....we played two shows w him in rochester and coney island high..it was just him and a gf keyb player..and he had a funny hat..didnt look like much ..till he turned on th knobs on..then it made sense..fried frazzled jetlagged from his hawaiian flight,,he blew sum kids away..when we plyed nyc he kept lighting joints and sticking them in my mouth while we were onstage..very sweet guy and really under looked..hope he makes more

I think he was under house arrest for 'terroristic threatening', if I remember his interview with Prindle. He also said he had given up drugs in that one, so maybe it should be taken with a grain of salt...

two months pass...

one of the bands i play in opened for helios creed on saturday night, they played as a 4-piece w/ 2 guitars, bass, drums. started off a bit rough, but got pretty psychedelic and cool by the end. the other guitar player played a keytar at one point. they did some chrome songs too, i think. (haven't heard much chrome, can't be sure)

Love the peak Edge/Creed Chrome stuff (basically Half Machine & Alien OST, plus a few strays from elsewhere), and root for HxCx as a hero from way back, but I don't think I've ever really LOVED his solo stuff. Fried as it is, it always seems too boxed-in, self-contained, satisfied to operate within a predefined set of limits. A bit freeze-dried, I mean. Live show goes the other way, like Spinal Tap on a beer budget, but occasionally spectacular. Best are probably the first few AmRep records, Lactating Purple has some lovely, subdued moments.
