Helios Creed is one of my favorite guitarists. I consider him unfairly unappreciated amongst the guitar institute set, mostly because he's too damn weird for them (much like the guy from Melt Banana is unappreciated by the guitar set because he's too damn insane for them) but that in no way takes away from his innovative use of six strings (and eleventy billion and six effects pedals).
I'll concede that some of his stuff around the time Nik Turner got his claws into him lacked the energy of his best works. But when he was on - Superior Catholic Finger, his solo debut X-Rated Fairy Tales and even the comperatively recent On the Dark Side of the Sun - he made some of the best psych-rock music around with enough meat on them that punks and metalheads took notice (or at least they should have). And as much as I love Chrome and realize that that group was the launching pad for HC, it's at least as good as the Chrome stuff, even the classic shit.
Pet Peeve: Record stores that have his stuff under "H."

Audience? About 60 of us. He should really be playing Instal and art-rock weekenders of that ilk.

Classic: Last Laugh, Boxing The Clown, Kiss To The Brain.
Then I stopped listening as much and fell totally behind.
Never liked the Subterranean records as much, but they sure ain't duds.

Love the peak Edge/Creed Chrome stuff (basically Half Machine & Alien OST, plus a few strays from elsewhere), and root for HxCx as a hero from way back, but I don't think I've ever really LOVED his solo stuff. Fried as it is, it always seems too boxed-in, self-contained, satisfied to operate within a predefined set of limits. A bit freeze-dried, I mean. Live show goes the other way, like Spinal Tap on a beer budget, but occasionally spectacular. Best are probably the first few AmRep records, Lactating Purple has some lovely, subdued moments.

For some reason it really tickles me that Helios Creed's real name is apparently Barry.
― Colonel Poo, Saturday, 22 April 2017 20:42 (nine years ago)
The Chrome Box is totally awesome, and I'm looking forward to see Chrome play next week
― sarahell, Saturday, 22 April 2017 21:07 (nine years ago)
I went to what I think was the first ever Chrome gig in the UK in 2014, was great.

I'm FB friended with him. (He sent me the request.) He is, to put it delicately, not aging well mentally. One of his sons posts to his page all of the time to try to talk some sense into him.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 15 April 2021 23:04 (five years ago)
Are either you or he FB friends with Jim Reid?
― It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 15 April 2021 23:06 (five years ago)
No.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 15 April 2021 23:13 (five years ago)
Goddammit.

Yeah. We discussed on a J&MC thread after I got a friend recommendation for him.
― It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:14 (five years ago)
And what's that got to do with Helios Creed acting like a tit?
― Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:23 (five years ago)
Nothing. Just going off on a tangent about being FB friends with well-known musicians.
― It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:32 (five years ago)
I thought you were looking for reassurance Jim Reid wasn't a tit as well.
― Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:35 (five years ago)
Frankly I am afraid to ask.
― It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:38 (five years ago)
I wouldn't worry, he seems a sensible chap.
― Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:39 (five years ago)
So you are saying I should friend him?
― It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:44 (five years ago)
Sure.
― Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Friday, 16 April 2021 00:44 (five years ago)
You'd be surprised how often they accept.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Friday, 16 April 2021 01:08 (five years ago)
