I was in Harrison Barr’s position myself once, and ended up buying, like, everything... but eventually realized that I could have just stuck with those two.

I actually paid someone on eBay for a CD-R of the hardest-to-find Super Roots; felt pretty dirty afterward.

i love vision creation newsuuun but yeah probably not good bookstore music! i would be into it in a bookstore but it's the kind of thing that ruffles feathers

i am very sensitive to people yelling at me about music selections so i understand. i used to get yelled at in a cd shop for playing fucking kraftwerk because the manager didn't know who they were

I have a Boredoms tee from around the Seadrum/House of Sun era, bright aqua with headphones on the front and some kind of tiger on the back, but its pretty worn out.

I mean, it wasn't exactly easy to vet hold of their stuff in the 90s/2000s iirc but they were a band I found out about through ILM and the sheer hushed but loud excitement surrounding them was palpable - an energy reserved for, I dunno, Aphex Twin or something.
And now you rarely hear anyone mention them or their side projects. Repress now please

What a weird moment in rock history that Pop Tatari was on Reprise in the US and my Midwest cowtown college radio station got it and my life changed (sort of).

i just came here to post about this! i had no idea that Vision Creation Newsun had never been reissued!!! that's insane. glad i never got rid of my CD. actually i might own two...

i was actually playing mine in the store right now and thought i should look up a price in case someone came in and wanted to buy it. but now i'm putting it under lock and key. had no idea it sold for $$. always seemed like such a normal thing to see around.

i wonder if anyone has reached out to the band about this stuff. does anyone have a hunch about what's going on?

One of my enduring memories of that yrs fest was Eye diving headfirst into an empty carboard refrigerator box while obviously screaming his head off

It was amazing

I know someone who was there who had told me a couple times about this insane Japanese band he had seen, describing them as "wild animals", in the best possible way of course. it took me a while to realize he was talking about Boredoms and when I mentioned them he was like "that's it!! I've been trying to remember their name for years!!"

I feel lucky that I got to see them a few times in the early/mid-2000s. The term "legendary" gets thrown around a lot, but it really does seem to fit this band.

Seeing them in 1994 remains one of my all-time live experiences. Also all the other times I saw them but nothing beats the first time.

I was very late to discovering Vision Creation Newsun a few years ago and now feel like it's an old friend. I don't know if I've ever heard an album with as much life and energy. It makes me want to run through a brick wall in places. And yet it's also incredibly beautiful, shimmery, and spacey elsewhere. What a goddamn glorious listening experience.

I only started listening to them last year. Fuck, I thought, why didn't I do this long ago?

I first delurked on ilx after the first Boadrum (or at least that’s how I remember it - maybe I was already posting a little but that unlocked my reticence)

I put the first track from VCN into a DJ set once and you could see everyone air drumming on the bar, it was so cool. wild that none of it has gotten reissued!!

they all seem to be fairly mysterious - private? - and i kinda hope it stays that way. some reissues would be hella rad though.

I have some stories/info to tell but I'd prefer to keep them off board.

What it boils down to: Warner Japan has all the rights to the recordings.

DKN (my former neighbor who was responsible for signing them to Reprise and then releasing the records in USA/non-Japan) no longer has control of his brief control of the worldwide rights.

IIIRC Super roots 7 is the extended jam on Where Were You? And it rules so hard, along with VCN.

feel like there's been an ILX thread about this, lotta really weird shit was on a major in the early 90s. Ween's Pure Guava comes to mind. Pop Tatari probably the craziest record overall though

Super Ae (my favorite) is on Tidal; not sure how it made it on there... looks like a other services only have the other stuff – Wow2 and the last two Super Roots volumes, which I guess aren't Warner Japan.

I remember being at a dinner once with coworkers and people were talking about favorite concerts and everyone else is talking about metallica or whatever other basic bullshit - then they turned to me and I had to draw on a napkin to try and explain the stage setup for the seadrum-era live show, with the double drummers and the tree made of guitar necks etc.

I really loved that there was one poor guy whose full time job was to try and restring the guitar necks mid-show after Eye hit them too hard with his mallets

This inspired me to pull out my "Bongwater – Cheap Trick" CD bag... I have: Onanie Bomb Meets the Sex Pistols + all the albums ("Pop Tari" is a hole-punch cut-out); Super Roots, Super Roots 6, and CD-Rs of Super Roots 3, 5, & 8 (*I think I may have paid a guy for one of those CD-Rs, back in the day, which I'm not proud of)

I never saw them live but I saw Yoshimi at Big Ears one year

I saw a nine-drummer show they did at ATP NY, which started out with eight drummers on stage. The ninth was carried on a podium through the crowd, playing his full kit as he was brought toward the stage. And Eye was fantastic on stage. They had a real sense of occasion.

I've just got my memories of it on the day then. eYe acted as the conductor for what felt like half an hour (but was probably 5 minutes) just bringing the main riff up and down and changing the tempo.

I am mostly focused on the ‘several kit drummers + eye’ era because I loved those shows so much and we don’t have an official recording that captures it satisfactorily (super roots 9 just doesn’t seem to do it for me unfort). For this-
—Arches Glasgow (relatively short at 35m but fantastic sound quality; 3 drummers and eye with his gadgets)
—Shepherds Bush (a bit reverberant but acceptable, and full length)
—ATP Minehead (despite cutting off during AH SAD PO LEE SUH) (the other post-boadrum era ones are in too rough of SQ for me)

I should listen to the 90s ones especially since I never saw them live in the 2nd half of the 90s (last one was choco synth tour, then picked up again with 2005 vooredoms)

ooh I was at this, as well as Minehead, and I might still call them the best performances I've ever seen, despite now recalling very little - I have to check these out. (One other thing about Minehead that I do recall is the skull-shatteringly loud whistle.)

I saw them in like...2007. I have no idea what the setlist was, I don't think they played anything from their studio recordings at all, main thing I remember was eYe playing this mounted 7-neck guitar with a giant stick which kept breaking the strings so it would sound different every time he hit it. first thought leaving was "I'll never see anything like that again"

Lollapalooza 94 is the only time I've seen them, and my first exposure to their music. Made quite an impression - I wish I had another opportunity to see them

those mid-90s shows are just unbelievably great, thankfully there is some killer video

they didnt make it to west coast lolla and were replaced by shutter to think and i was so pissed

Hey Chakklezzz, no west coast lollapalooza in 94, but on their way to lolla they played my radio show (4th of July! you should have been listening to instead of the ROQ of the 80z), then later that night at The Palace (lol) dual headlining with the Thinking Fellers or Drive Like Jehu or Trumans Water? I can't remember.
