(and please try to resist telling me your favorite tracks that you THINK the kids today should be into.) i'm helping a friend who has to preview all the song requests and come up with the final allowed list for a prep school dance with kids from 11-17. this is a challenge, indeed, oh wise ILM board. (the request list so far is skewed heavily towards hit radio hip-hop and r&b - chris brown, sean paul, black-eyed peas, etc.)

'my humps' was the first song that came to mind.

anything with fun and goofy lyrics that also hint at something provocative that the kids may or may not understand but certainly sense...

and, like i said, Green Day.

Most mainstream rap does well. I can only talk for middle class, mostly white schools because that's the only thing I've seen but even kids who mostly listen to rock enjoy Lil Jon and T.I. at dances because it's fun to dance to. Hollaback Girl will get a huge reaction, I'm sure of it. They also like extremely corney shit to slow dance to, like any sort of slow jam or even any of those Vh1 types like Maroon 5, or probably even James Blount.

Just remember, in high school, all the kids who are snobby about music don't go to school dances.

OMG, what is "Laffy Taffy", I heard it at a Sports Bar I went to by accident, and I was like, HOLY SHIT, this is awesome! And then Biff and Chet gave me a wedgie.

Rihanna - "If It's Lovin That You Want" which I like more than Pon De Replay and from the KIDZ perspective has the advantage of being more recent.

Kelly Clarkson-Moment like this is required. It's so sweet.

Definitely don't play Bohemian Rhapsody. As a teenager myself, I can testify that a weirdly large number of high school dances feature this, at which point the girls leave the guys and sing Figaro, figaro several times over.

I ran a queer youth group for a few years recently, and whenever we'd have dances or Queer Prom or such, they were all about the hip-hop and Latin stuff. Nothing else.

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Well, except for a few rebel souls who wanted to bust out the Bitch & Animal.

oh boy. i am a senior in high school and a drum major in the marching band. at the end of band camp there is always a dance, and i asked to dj it, and they approved. ohhhh boy. i took some of the kid's mainstream rap cds, which they loved but when i tried to throw in phoenix or jamie lidell they kinda went, "huh?" i was quite frustrated. when i played digital love by daft punk this one girl came up and asked me to play something "more upbeat." i was about to punch her in the nose. don't try to put in anything that wouldn't be played on the major teen pop station. i quit after three requests for linkin park.
