Theres a song by a bunch of kids called Ghetto Reality or somethinglike that about James Brown (starts "born in agusta georgia/james brown/born in agusta georgia/james brown/bornin in agusta, georgia/he was the son...)with akids chorus and a piano...ive lost the mp3 so i can't post it.

the question is who covered it? it was some 90's indie-rock band. it was on a split 7"...with like eggs or someone -- hell, it might have been eggs -- and was part of one of the subscription series from K or Simple Machines...

The Tinklers (whoever that might be). It was one side of the Simple Machines single for April (part of the one year "Working Holiday" series where musicians performed songs pegged to holidays in each month, etc.) I don't know who was in the Tinklers and haven't heard a thing about them since. Maybe they were an indie rock supergroup of some kind?

Whoops, make that the February single (not April).

not the one you're looking for, but Was (Not Was) does a brilliant song called I Feel Better Than James Brown.

I remember the Tinklers. They had an album or two on Shimmy-Disc back in the day and were regular contributors to their comps. They weren't a supergroup of any kind... The album title Casserole sticks in my brain.

Haha, The Tinklers track was fun. All the more so because until now I thought it was a parody of a certain type of song rather than a cover.

Big Audio Dynamite, "James Brown," on which they sample "America" from West Side Story: "Life is all right in America/If you're all white in America." Genius.

The a-side was "Abraham Lincoln" by Lungfish. I have the CD collection of the entire Working Holiday series. Very neat. I haven't heard the original "James Brown," but the Tinklers' version didn't bother me. My favorite side in that series, though, was the very first one, "11:59" by Scrawl (a-side of the January single).

oh i remember the lungfish track now...i also forgot there was that cd comp.
