Magnolia Thunderpussy is a legendary indie record store, serving central Ohio for the past 35 years. I think people might be interested to see what is doing well in a typical college-town independent record store with a cool-ass name and it might spark discussion. I will post the Weekly Sales (as reported to SoundScan and CMJ) in this thread until I or everyone get bored with it all.

Magnolia Top Sellers (01/23-01/29)

"Sheavy - Republic (Candlelight)"

Cool, I did not know Sheavy had a new album out.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:49 (twenty years ago)

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 07:23 (twenty years ago)

I think it's interesting that only five out of thirty were in the chart last week. What does this mean? That there are no acts that can sell consistently for even two weeks?

sleeve (sleeve), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 07:41 (twenty years ago)

Our charts are indeed quite volatile although often a disc will resurface. Clap Your Hands has constantly bounced from being on the chart to dropping off of it, for example.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 08:16 (twenty years ago)

How many copies sold does it take to make it onto the chart in an average week?

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

There's a new Dozer record? How does it compare to In The Tail Of A Comet? "Captain Spaceheart" rocked my world in 2000 though the record was uneven ... haven't followed them since.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I can't get into exact numbers as per the boss but usually you will get on if you get to a half dozen copies. This explains the volatility of our chart.

And yes, there is a new Dozer disc that nobody bothered to send me a promo of yet.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

There's a good record store in central Ohio???

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:44 (twenty years ago)

dude, columbus has several.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Ron House owns one that is pretty fucking sweet in fact.

Ever been here, Mr. Snrub? Or are you just stereotyping an area of "flyover country" that you don't have a fucking clue about?

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Bitch, I LIVE IN CENTRAL OHIO!!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I've been searching for a decent record store ever since Spinmore Records in Kent turned crap.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 00:26 (twenty years ago)

You might live here but you apparently need to get out more often.
If you don't like my store hit the aforementioned Ron House-owned Used Kids and if you like garage rock, hit up Johnny Go's House Of Music. We also have a great roots-world music reggae-hip-hop store Roots Records.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 00:29 (twenty years ago)

And these stores are all in Columbus?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 00:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes. All in the campus area.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 00:37 (twenty years ago)

magnolia thunderpussy is a great store name! kudos to whoever thought of that!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Cool! I'll check your store out next time I'm in the area.

It gets worse. Shaggy will be doing a signing in the store on Wednesday. The calls we have been getting from Juggalos tell me that it will not be a MENSA meeting, that's for sure. *sigh*

The signing was surreal. The fans started arriving not long after the store opened at 10:00 AM, hanging around and trying to look inconspicuous in their facepaint with disgusting-looking Faygo bottles.

The employees who were there were trying to be nice however when Shaggy's handlers came, they laid down the law. The tour manager, who answered to the name Pickle, was a no-nonsense kinda guy. He kicked everyone out of the store and kicked his crew in the ass to get this Dj Booth built in the middle of the store, replete with two turntables, a disco ball and a Jaegger fountain. It was strange having a giant black room in the middle of our store, but that wasn't all that would be strange this afternoon.

Shaggy 2 Dope arrived shortly after the annointed time of 6:00 PM through the back door. The videographer (a guy videotaped the entire event for a future DVD) had a great look behind him as he walked through the store, raised his hands and all the masses of painted kids roared their approval from the other side of the front glass. Truly, this was the pinnacle of rock.

His handlers made sure that the line moved rapidly and efficiently. Girls came out of the DJ booth proudly showing autographed bras and sometimes autographed titties. This was kinda disturbing as the ratio of girls who were *really* young was high. Higher than that was the ratio of girls who... I shall be gentle, since they were young... did not have body types that needed to be exposed among polite company (or here).

While this was all happening, outside things got unruly. The videographer dutifully filmed several fights, mostly involving girls going at each other. You could hear Nero rosining up his bow at times.

Outside of our store is a couch. It is an art project - a couch made of limestone. Here is a photo of it covered with show:

http://www.theshortnorth.com/images/sofa%20park%20003%20250%20pict.jpg

When you add a limestone couch with a line of Juggalos, almost all of whom have Sharpie's to get their tits signed, you get a limestone sofa covered with really banal graffiti. I wonder if we will be held reponsible for the damage...

To Mr. 2 Dope's credit, he stayed well past the 9:00 PM time. He didn't sign the last poster, CD and body part until close to 11:00 PM, which meant he was in that booth for nearly five hours. I can't handle Juggalo's for five minutes, so I figure either he is far more patient than a gangsta clown has a right to be, or this is some kind of pennance for inspiring them all in the first place. I'll let the dime store philosophers sort that one out.

At this point, I entered the inner sanctum to get Mr. 2 Dope to sign a poster to the store. He was abrupt with me. His makeup seemed to have smeared the brim of his garishly-colored Detroit Tiger cap. But after he had to be coached on how to spell Magnolia (he said "I can spell pussy" when it came to the rest of the store's name) he personalized a poster to the store and then went off into the cold Columbus night.

The owner of the store didn't get to leave until 12:30 in the morning; that's how long it took for Mr. 2 Dope's crew to break everything down and pack it away. We sold nearly 80 CDs - a small amount considering how many hundreds of people were there and the fact that his CD is so fucking new - but Mr. 2 Dope's handlers sold tee-shirts and posters at $10 a pop.

Don't tell anyone, but we went into the line with the same posters (sent to us by the label in advance of the in-store) and sold them for $5 each, undercutting Mr. 2 Dope. It wasn't my idea. In fact, I asked the owner if he was a bit worried that the handlers would think something was up when people started entering the store with posters that they were selling already in hand. He seemed unconcerned. With good reason - the handlers never said a thing.

The owner seemed to view this bit of larceny as justified since Mr. 2 Dope sold his own tee-shirts and posters (we did not get a cut) and also the mass of frightening humanity meant that customers who merely wanted to shop for some (possibly good) music couldn't get into the store. A few regulars resorted to calling us on their cell phones begging us to let them in the back. "I just want the new Belle & Sebastian," a particularly frightened voice on the enf of the line intoned. Sadly, I never found out her fate.

One interesting thing during the event was a moment I had with the aforementioned videographer. I asked him what he thought of all fo this. He weighed the question and answered honestly - those kids allowed him to quit working in a video store and start working the other side of the camera. That band and its many offshoot projects and other groups signed to the label allow for a couple dozen people to work, get healthy benefits, feed their kids.

Then he started going in on how the kids will open up to Mr. 2 Dope, how they have led hard lives and that they find solace in the music, in the sense of community. How there were a few bad ones but how most of them were exceedingly polite and well-mannered, how they listened to what they were told and loved getting to meet their hero.

I was touched.

Then I followed him outside as he hustled to catch some guy soaking some other guy with Faygo (I think it was grape) before punching him in the face as the crowd cheered on...

dude, what did this little DJ booth and jager fountain look like? Pics!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Saturday, 25 March 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, we are picture-less. On the outside it just looked like a black box - kinda like one of those portable storage units that you put on a truck if you want to move your stuff. Although it had a disco ball and speakers mounted to it outside of the door.

On the inside there was a table with twin turntables (during the instore, some kid bumped into it causing the needle to go scratching whatever was playing; the Juggalos in line booed appropriately and I think the kid was berated by the DJ) and a larger table where Shaggy 2 Dope resided.

On that table was the Jaegger fountain which looked like the kind of thing you see in your average frat bars. Overall, it was pretty cool. Every kid wishes their treehouse would have been similarly equipped.

Are the weird bumps on there (ATDI? Spoon?) because a tour came through town or what?

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

The ATDI came about because someone special ordered a bunch at once (yes, you too can influence our chart!); the Spoon & Postal Service discs are consistant sellers and sometimes pop onto the bottom of the chart in weeks that are very top-heavy like this one. This was especially so - the Tool record outsold PJ by over 4-to-1 and the PJ still sold enough copies that it would have been #1 almost every other week.

Aren't those Edan and Blueprint albums a year and a half old or something? How did that happen, Brian?

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:01 (twenty years ago)

You guys sell a surprising (to me, at least) amount of metal. Are indie outlets still most of metal's stock-in-trade? (I won't lie: since moving to L.A., I mostly buy at Tower and Virgin, Amoeba mostly just for used stuff.)

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm always surprised by the metal, too - and not *just* the metal, but which specific metal does well. (Celtic Frost at number one? Wow. Not to mention that zillion year old Slayer album -- did that just get reissued with a DVD or something?)

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:08 (twenty years ago)

And Bell Biv Devoe sort of come out of nowhwere, too. How many sales does it take to end up on the chart? Can't be too many, I'd guess!

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Magnolia's is not a typical 'indie' record store; it's heavily geared to old-skool metal and goth audiences.

I just hate it because all of the used cds are in plastic lock boxes, which I find to be a pain to look through. I don't like Singin' Dog (another cowtown indie record store) for the same reason.

J (Jay), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:12 (twenty years ago)

I assumed the Slayer was b/c last week was 6/6/06, and obv. not all of their fans could get to Hot Topic for their new exclusive EP (I'm not making this up)...

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the Slayer was because many silly metalheads made 6/6/06 "National Slayer Day." And since Hot Topic had the band's EP as an exclusive, people who came here got something else to fit the bill.

Bluepring and Edan discs repapeared because the DJ Pos 2 mixtape brought out a bunch of locals who apparently had to catch up on things. Blueprint is, himself, a local.

As for Bell Biv Devoe... Well, we all know that Slayer fans are big BBD fans, right?

As the metal buyer, I appreciate the kind words. We rocked long before I got here but I like to think I carry the torch. The new Satyricon will be huge here as well...

Who's buying Joe Cocker's Gold? (Please say "Metalheads.")

don (dow), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
I will say Metalheads because I like to make people happy.

But honesty? Being in business over 30 years means we have a diverse clientelle including a lot of older folks who shopped here when they were young'uns. Some of them come by with their own kids. That's actually kinda cool...

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Last week when I went to post the chart, the website was down so this is last week's followed by this week's. This will show the glory that is Slayer... (Anyone who has been keeping up with this thread could have predicted the Slayer doing well here.)

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

Posting mainly to say, wow, that ICP story is fabulous. Thanks for sharing, Brian. I just moved to Columbus last month and went to Magnolia (Magolia?) Thunderpussy for the first time yesterday. Not a bad selection at all, although I was somewhat stymied by the practice of cramming each record box with roughly five more records than the box can hold. Adventures in browsing! That said, I definitely saw some things I'd go back for, and I'll be recommending this store around once I make some music nerd friends. (Also, for older stuff, Lost Weekend Records much further up High Street - very nice guy running the place and a comfortable basement aesthetic going on.)

brian i'm still curious abt bo shembecklers, pls explain.

i looked on their myspace, they seemed like a party punk type band?? are they really that popular?

M@tt He1geson: Sassy and I Don't Care Who Knows It (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 5 January 2007 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

The Dead Schembechlers are a joke punk band that takes on the Ohio State-Michigan football rivalry. They have done this for a couple of years now but this year - in part due to the magnitude of the game, in part due to the PR sensibilities of the band - the group wound up getting interviewed in major media outlets in the weeks leading up to the game (and their annual "Hate Michigan" rally.)

The band members all go by Bo and the last name of a famous punk rocker - Bo Biafra, Bo Vicious, Bo Scabies, Bo Thunders. They all dress up like Woody Hayes. Biafra did amazing interviews where he would say that the Buckeyes never lost to the Wolverines - that the "liberal Wolverine conspiracy" is responsible for reports that they ever did lose (that and other conspiracy theories involving crop dusting planes causing crowds to hallucinate a Wolverine win) and claim that he channeled coach Woody Hayes in visions. Funny stuff.

Even Bo Schembechler, the legendary Michigan coach, heard about the band and laughed at it; this was in the sports section of ESPN and Yahoo! Sports. Unfortunately, Schembechler had the audacity to actually *become* dead on the eve of the game and the "Hate Michigan" rally which made the band name seem to be in bad taste (even though they've been at it for four years).

The rally took on a more somber tone than usual because of this and the band changed their name recently to The Bastard Sons Of Woody, claiming to actually *be* illigitimate offspring of the former coach.

Last year was more fun if you ask me because the "Wolverine Destroyers" disc was new (it is still their only release) and also because a pro-Wolverine band called The Dropkick Woodys played the "Hate Rally," giving the Dead Schembechlers an evil foe and completing the wrestling-like ethos nicely.

Rumors that the Dead Schembechlers *and* Dropkick Woodys are actually members of Columbus' own Watershed (formerly on a major label, they've put out a few indie releases of crunchy pop in recent years and still have a decent following here and around the area) remain unconfirmed...
