I loved the last one and downloading this one at the moment. This type of guitar rock is what I'm in the mood to hear, so it's about time. Will they ever write a better lyrics then "She lifting her dress up, all the way up?"

I've loved everything they've done thus far, so I have high hopes. Where are you downloading it from, pray tell?

s1sk

best break-up album of 2006

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

I have an advance, and, well, don't expect Now Here Is Nowhere. There's little rock and a lot of pretentious Pink Floydisms amid even more sad bastard lyrics. Reminds me most of a slightly less bombastic Mercury Rev, post Deserter's Songs.

eric, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

second song is huge

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

boycotting due to asshole singer ruining otherwise decent "remix" of Tempation by New Order. maybe someone with half the talent of Secret Machines should remix one of their tracks by basically adjusting the EQ and then singing over the original vocal. that would be creative!

biz, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

and yeah, i definitely get a mercury rev feeling from all this

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Right, that means I'll like it, then. Hurrah! I prefer them when they're being Pink Floyd to when they're "rocking".

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Worst. Live. Band. Ever.

Jason_B, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Can someone YSI me "Lightning Blue Eyes" because I downloaded the torrent but that song wont work.

one month passes...
Upon second live viewing (first time in DC, tonight in Liverpool), they officially kill.

If they'd concentrate even MORE on the head-banging hooky bits at the expense of wankery I'd think they'd be huge.

PB, Monday, 27 March 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

they be the bomb-digidity live, yo.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:25 (twenty years ago)

really liking this a lot more now...

random: does anyone have a hi-res copy of the cover art?

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 08:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm reviewing them live next week. Based on iTunes previews (my research skills are second to none), the album sounds more mopy than I was expecting. Do they rock it up on stage?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Mopy?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Not impressed with this in the slightest. Too much wanking about and not enough tunes. Alone, Jealous & Stoned is brilliant though. Not fit to lace Now Here Is Nowhere's boots.

yer mam! (yer mam!), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 11:44 (twenty years ago)

xpost: OK, mopey. It mopes.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 11:51 (twenty years ago)

did they neuter they're drummer??!
my gawd, where's the tension???
where's the 'movement'????
WHERE'S THE BIG SOUND!?!?!?!

eedd, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:32 (twenty years ago)

zzz. :(

harshaw (jube), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Alone, Jealous and Stoned is great. Even though it sounds nothing like it, reminds me of Pulp - Dishes.

Can someone find the *inside* cover photo? I swear to god this photo was taken in my old neighbourhood and I want my former housemate to check if it's the roof of PS1 or somewhere else close.

Oh yeah. The album - it's not as great as Now Here Is Nowhere (not quite as relentless) but still diverting.

Hmm... I think Ten Silver Drops is great, and still haven't gotten into NHIN. Although it took me quite some time to really dig further than "Lightning Blue Eyes." But at this point II have to say it's been a LOOOONG time since I've really lived in an album as much as this one. Still not really feeling "I Want to Know If It's Still Possible" or "1,000 Seconds," and "Daddy's in the Doldrums" rubs me the wrong way for some reason. Thanks, Kate.

Why is "Lightning Blue Eyes" so underappreciated?

billstevejim, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 04:56 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

i dunno i love the fuck out of that track

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 7 October 2010 06:28 (fifteen years ago)

me too, probably my favorite song from that whole nebulous alt-glam genre which this album is lumped into in my head

ciderpress, Thursday, 7 October 2010 06:31 (fifteen years ago)

just curious, what other songs/artists would be in the alt-glam genre in your head

billstevejim, Thursday, 7 October 2010 06:34 (fifteen years ago)

placebo is the main band that comes to mind (though secret machines first album sounds nothing like placebo to me, only this one)

ciderpress, Thursday, 7 October 2010 06:39 (fifteen years ago)

and i don't really like placebo but i do like this so whatever

ciderpress, Thursday, 7 October 2010 06:39 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I hear that.. I've never really been sure what genre or subgenre to place this album in.. And honestly I know nothing else Secret Machines have ever done.. When I tried to get into their other stuff it just never sounded as good as this album, and I forgot about it after 1 or 2 listens. But I'm very familiar with Ten Silver Drops, and "Lightning Blue Eyes" def has a spot reserved in my eventual 100 best songs of the 00's list that isn't yet determined/written down.

billstevejim, Thursday, 7 October 2010 06:47 (fifteen years ago)

really the first three tracks together are grebt

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 7 October 2010 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

sadly track four is a mediocre rehash of First Wave Intact and you have to wait for the last song before anything genuinely good happens again

acoleuthic, Thursday, 7 October 2010 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

self-titled album on the other hand: sorely underrated

acoleuthic, Thursday, 7 October 2010 23:33 (fifteen years ago)

The song was originally entitled "Alone, Jealous and Erect", but the band's label asked them to change the title of the song in fear that it would not be taken seriously.

wtf One of those cases where "the label" made an excellent call...

billstevejim, Friday, 8 October 2010 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

best break-up album of 2006

I don't think I heard a better break-up album in the entire decade.

Vast Halo, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks for the revive. This deserved another visit--there is a lot more in the second side to love than is first apparent, "I Hate Pretending" and "1000 Seconds" especially. The slower songs on this record fucking steamroll those of Now Here is Nowhere.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 October 2010 07:01 (fifteen years ago)

1000 Seconds is a genuinely lovely piece of music - Coldplay done properly

NHIN is freaking ALL about the bookend monsters these days. Sad And Lonely/Nowhere Again/The Road Leads.../Lights On can play too although not as much. So in essence, you're right.
