S: Stevie Wonder's "We Can Work It Out"

John Klemmer - Hey Jude = massive search (this is more jazz i suppose)

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Arghhhhhhhhh!

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Dunno whether you call them soul/funk/R&B, but Scritti Politti did a great version of "She's a Woman", originally one of Paul's lesser songs, which became a great reggae pop song when covered by Green.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Actually the Eddie Hazel cover of I Want You (She's So Heavy) is brilliant.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

haha I was just gonna nominate that

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Does Earth, Wind & Fire's version of Got To Get You Into My Life count? That's rather disco. That and the Wilson Pickett Hey Dude are the only two I can think of that don't seem to be real lows on the albums they're on. I have stacks of tunes in this category!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:40 (twenty years ago)

I look forward to the posthumous release of Wilson Pickett's Kula Shaker covers album.

Ray Charles' version of Elennor Rigby

darin (darin), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 00:34 (twenty years ago)

Search:

The Five Stairsteps' version of "Dear Prudence." I've never seen it on an American best of for the 'Steps, but it was included on a collection from the Sequel label in the UK. It's a killer.

James, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 01:11 (twenty years ago)

I second Stevie Wonder's take on "We Can Work It Out." Al Green's version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is a lot of fun. I love the intro bit ("Shut up, Al Green!).

D. Bachyrycz, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Al Green otm.

Stevie's version of "We Can Work It Out" fourthed! And what about Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends"?

Brothers Johnson "Come Together"

Particle Ranger (particle ranger), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Ella Fitzgerald's "Got To Get You Into My Life" (surprisingly funky). In a similar jazzy-funk vein, Grant Green's "Day In The Life" and "Something" by Charles Earland.

seconding Wilson Picket's Hey Jude and Aretha's Eleanor Rigby.

ooh, just remembered "Hey Jude" by King Curtis - one of my favourite Beatles covers.

bracestower, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Aretha cut a nice version of "Let It Be," too.

James, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

also:

"Drive My Car" by Black Heat
"Day Tripper" by Ramsey Lewis
"Come Together" by The Meters
"Norwegian Wood" by Hugh Masekela (more jazzy then soul though)

Quincy Jones did a great Beatles cover, but without the album in front of me I can't remember if it was "We Can Work It Out" or "Ticket To Ride".

bracestower, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

A whole album for ya:

Bobby Womack - And I Love Her

(Quite nice)

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

ah...that reminds me - "Michelle" and "Lady Madonna" by Booker T & The MGs (on "The Booker T Set")

bracestower, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I just got the Booker T. Set recently, but my record player is busted, so I haven't listened to it yet. Has anyone heard McLemore Avenue?

I'm sure they haven't been mentioned due to obviousness, but Otis Redding's cover versions ("Day Tripper" and "A Hard Day's Night") are pretty great too, especially live.

This thread is just crying out for some YSIs.

D. Bachyrycz, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

"Come Together" is so obviously Stax/Volt-influenced I am kind of surprised there haven't been more R&B covers of it.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Ike and Tina covered that one quite well. You're right - I don't know of any others r/b versions. The only other cover I know of is Aerosmith's.

James, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

What about the Chuck Berry version? Oh wait.

on this comp called "Memphis 60" Wee Willie Walker does "Ticket to Ride." Goldwax '67. def one of the worst such covers in history, since they forget the big chord change going into the chorus and that fucks up the whole thing. Esther Phillips did "And I Love Him" well, Esther Phillips could do anything anyway.

some good picks here (robert palmer's "not a second time" and james brown's "something" are good deep picks) - i didn't realize dylan had done "things we said today", it's a good fit for old dylan

anyway, this is, uh, kind of an interest of mine (still looking for a version of "what goes on", but that's the only one left); i won't rehash the whole list here, but i will point out that the first post in this thread is WRONG w/r/t "yesterday", where PP Arnold's is one of the only good covers, and i will also point out that ray charles' version of "the long and winding road" is what the song was obviously intended to be all along and it's a source of continuing confusion to me that nobody seems to know it exists

actually i bet dylan could do a really good version of "what goes on", even though Nobody Sings Ringo Like Ringo

big fan of the Ramsey Lewis LP of White Album covers Mother Nature's Son, have dropped his version of "Cry Baby Cry" into a few DJ sets:

my one-liner on that is "People keep saying there's one good albums inside the White Album - turns out it's this one"

anyway yeah charles stepney was a fucking genius and i hope a recording of "Cohesion" turns up at some point

The 5th Dimension's cover of "Ticket to the Ride" almost ruins the otherwise brilliant "Magic Garden" album.
