Best movie soundtrack of the 90's

I think the Trainspotting soundtrack was the best soundtrack of the 90's. It captured the British music scene perfectly at that time - Britpop (Blur, Sleeper, Pulp) and acid/dance/house (Underworld, Primal Scream, Leftfield) - and gave a nod to the old classics (Iggy Pop, New Order, Lou Reed).

What's your favorite soundtrack of the 90's?

Every album on this thread:

the crow ost is the worst record i have ever heard

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Morvern Callar was excellent, although maybe that came out in the 00s. Otherwise, I would say Jackie Brown.

Robin Goad (rgoad), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:04 (eighteen years ago) link

The soundtrack to Ravenous is a good one. Not so much songs, but incidental, background music. Damon Albarn did it.

Singles- for nostalgia's sake

Suburbia- for the nice mix of indie luv!

Twin Peaks:Fire Walk With Me- just cuz.

Trainspotting and Singles are really the only acceptable answers here

singles only has the best pumpkins song ever on it, and i hate SP.

I really enjoy the soundtrack to the 1990 movie (just squeaking in!) A Rage in Harlem:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:musyxdjb8olf~T1

I have to admit with embaressment I've never seen the film, but I've listened to my copy of the soundtrack often.

And a second nod for Michael Nyman's score for Ravenous. His music underscores the suspense and creepiness of that film perfectly, especially the spooky piece used for the cave/chase sequence (titled "The Cave," of course). The movie is one of my favorite 90's horror films as well. I went to see it on its opening weekend with two friends and there were five people in the theater on a Saturday afternoon. The movie deserved much better.

A MATTER OF DEGREES

The original soundtrack featuring Pixies' "Where Is My Mind."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a copy of the -A Matter of Degrees- soundtrack, but I swear, I don't remember ever seeing any advertising for that movie (well, except for the soundtrack, of course) or it playing at a local theater. I don't remember it ever being run on cable television (the final resting place of straight-to-video movies) either. And the IMDB lists no VHS or DVD. Has anyone ever seen this film?

James, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:40 (eighteen years ago) link

I have (my roommate used to hunt for OOP videos in junkshops and make tons of money on them in the pre-DVD, dawn-of-eBay era). It's a mess. On the upside, The B-52s are in it and JFK Jr has a cameo as a guitar player in a band (!).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 22:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Another vote for Ravenous. Jackie Brown way way waaay better than Pulp Fiction. Splendor over Trainspotting. 54 over Boogie Nights.

I remember X-files: Songs in the Key of X was pretty good, better than what I expected at the time (then again I was what...? 9yo --hehe)...
Velvet Goldmine (1998)? all the t.rex...heh...or not.

Pulp Fiction and ResDogs soundtracks (QT in general) are more than a bit overrated...or maybe i'm just tired of hearing about them/him all the time? ...but Little Green Bag...what a song.

and that Kids soundtrack looks like it's definitely one of the best.

I know I harp on this film a lot but the Pi soundtrack is excellent - a nice slab of 90s drum b bass and ambient artists, plus Clint Mansell's own great score tracks:

1. Pi (Symbol)r2 - Clint Mansell
2. P.E.T.R.O.L. - Orbital
3. Kalpol Intro - Autechre
4. Bucephalus Bouncing Ball - Aphex Twin
5. Watching Windows - Roni Size
6. Angel - Massive Attack
7. We Got The Gun - Clint Mansell
8. No Man's Land - David Holmes
9. Anthem - Gus Gus
10. Drippy - Banco De Gaia
11. Third from the Sun - Psilonaut
12. A Low Frequency Inversion Field - Spacetime Continuum
13. 2Pi (Symbol)r - Clint Mansell

Crap - Rushmore was the 90s! Where did the last..er...6 years go...

Anyway - for me - it's between Out of Sight, Dead Man Walking (and there's a pretty good score as well with more Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on), Dutch Harbour (which incidentally I think is about to be re-issued on DVD) and Reach The Rock - a film I've never seen but the soundtrack is terrific.
