There are a few funky house tracks that get there via a different route - Crazy Cousinz remixes of Kyla's Do You Mind and Meleka's Go have sort of vaguely euphoric-deep-melancholy piano chords a la Sweet Harmony.

Also Aeroplane tend to wheel the pianos out for their most hands-in-the-air moments, I'm think the Allez Allez mix in particular. Also Lullabies In The Dark's Code 7429, and Joakim's remix of DJ Mehdi.

yeah aeroplane! they should use pianos more imo, the house piano bliss sound is such a close cousin to the aeroplane steez im surprised they dont have pianos in every song

Yeah I was thinking along the lines of reappropriation of piano house elements really - I think the Big Euphoric Piano Chords aspect of most of them comes directly from house rather than disco.

well not really since House is House in particular seem to me to be most strongly referencing the Larry Levan "Stand on the Word" remix.

I don't think distinguishing disco/house is splitting hairs at all...

'stand on the world' strikes me as "proto-house" anyway--but if the use of the word "house" bothers u ronan u nincompoop how about: what recent dance music is appropriating older dance musics use of piano

"House of House" is the one of those three I haven't heard, so no comment on that one.

it doesn't bother me particularly (you nincompoom), I just don't think of this stuff as "piano house" really...I think I like piano house a bit better. I'm not being all house proprietor about this, just think it's an important distinction.

eg piano house for me is quintessentially this, something about the electronic drums/roboticism of the beat that makes it more of a specific thing.

not that tons of things didn't follow that too. I guess I would like if the DFA stuff or House of House was a bit darker and more electronic...and not as jaunty.

there probably isn't actually that much current house/techno with pianos which I assume is why the above stuff is filling a gap.

It's something about the specific use of pianos - those sorts of big chords - and yeah they probably are seen as a bit of a kitsch or retro sound at the moment in actual house music, which is why its reappearance in funky is kind of interesting. But it also explains why the DFA/cosmic disco types have appropriated it - I'm not sure there's much actual disco with piano like that, although I could be wrong.

(I still really love Psychotic Photosynthesis, btw, but it doesn't quite fit the vibe here)

i sort of wonder if the sound im looking for isnt the disco -> house bridge sound--the re-appropriation of house's own appropriation of snippets of disco piano

i've been fully expecting a piano house revival for over a year now. best recent example i can think of is carl craig's remix of francesco tristano's 'the melody' which has the same vibe as a lot of late 80s/early 90s italian stuff like fpi project, secchi, data bass, sueno latino, don carlos. i love that sound so much.

Italo house was hitting its stride just as I was getting proficient on the piano (I was 16 or so), so I actually taught myself to play a lot of those tracks.

I think this is a nice mix of the old and the new:

I've been dropping house piano breaks on *everything* lately - it started as a joke, but it's started to get out of hand. So I need to learn me some of this shit. School me in the ways of house piano!

(I had to play boogie woogie piano for some MC who thought he was Jools Holland the other night, but that's another story. I had no idea I remembered how to play that sort of muck.)
