As I said, the 80s in general, more or less, at least the first half. (I guess the second half, dominated by hair metal, manufactured pop, rap and house music, was a bit different)

My Bloody Valentine seemed equally focused on melody and production, though the "drums" on 'Loveless' suggest rhythm was less of a concern. Ride and the Stone Roses have rhythms just as entertaining as their melodies; does that count?

Apart from "Remain In Light", which concentrates way more on rhythm (and some brilliant production) you may be right.

Owen is OTM about Stone Roses and let me add lots of other baggy acts such as Charlatans, EMF, Jesus Jones, early Blur, Mock Turtles, Northside. Not Happy Mondays though - they were mainly interested in rhythm.
