C/D: Remy Ma "Conceited (There's Something About Remy)"

I find nothing original nor even that exciting about this song, but I can't stop singing this... it's very much a very lazy adaptation of Beyoncé and Missy, but with less variation and more up-front bitchiness... and those lyrics are highly catchy. Granted, seeing the video helps.

It also helps to see this video on Rapcity when Fat Joe plugs it, and tries to explain why Remy Ma is more real than other female rappers.

Da Na Not! (donut), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 07:11 (twenty years ago)

Remy IS more real than other female rappers. Or at least capable of exuding a more complex image (same thing, right?).

I don't see a glaring Beyonce/Missy connection at all. Because she's bragging? Doesn't that make her more like every other rapper that ever existed than just Beyonce and Missy (who really have very little to do with each other in the first place image- and content-wise)?

"Now who's that peakin' in my window / Nobody 'cause I live in a penthouse," is my favorite couplet of the year so far.

Richj (Rich), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 08:14 (twenty years ago)

the Beyonce/Missy thing was based on the backing music and tempo.. that's all.

Remy IS more real than other female rappers. Or at least capable of exuding a more complex image (same thing, right?).

Is it?

Earnestly, I'm asking. Complex = more real?

Da Na Not! (donut), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 09:06 (twenty years ago)

I think so. It might be like saying Pixar animation is more real than traditional, but at least we're working with more dimensions, y'know?

Richj (Rich), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I am completely obsessed with this track.

Dan (SHOCKER) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 15:17 (twenty years ago)

I admit I read this subject line and I thought, "Wait, our Remy?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

remy is probably the best rapper in new york right now

,,, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 15:22 (twenty years ago)

i know thats just asking for black rob dick riders to bumrush this thread but tell me who is fuckin w/ her?

,,, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 15:23 (twenty years ago)

the album could not possibly be more mediocre, though.

BOOOOOOOOOOO

Dan (BUbble Burst, Parade Rained Upon) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Well, I just ordered the 12" single for "Conceited" over the weekend, so I'm very excited...

Da Na Not! (donut), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

This album is good. Its selling well too isn't it? Compared to, like, Terror Squad LPs.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:54 (twenty years ago)

The album is unimaginative late 90s NY hip hop. Her style is tired, and the slow songs really drag.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

other than kanye, who is exciting to you right now, paulhw?

-- deej.. (clublonel...), February 21st, 2006 1:54 PM. (later)

not really! first week chart position was #33. I'm still kind of on the fence about the album, how good it ends up seeming will probably depend on how good other releases this year are.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

also I like "Conceited" a lot, considering the last thing I expected to enjoy was another "Lean Back"/"Candy Shop" type Tuff Jew beat.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

"i look way too good to be fuckin' you"

i love this song, it's exactly the sort of completely generic vaguely-eastern vaguely-crunk stuff i'm a sucker for, and remy herself is even more awesome than on 'whuteva'

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

haha i think #33 is good compared to Terror Squad's album but really my only basis for saying 'positive sales' was that its selling really well at the coconuts near my work - in their top ten best selling cds or something.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

dude, True Story had a top 5 Billboard debut and sold almost 3 times what Remy's album sold in the first week

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

See this ain't nothin that you used to
Out of the ordinary and unusual
You gotta have the mind state like I'm so great
And can't nobody do it like you do
Miraculous, phenomenal
And ain't nobody in here stoppin' you
Show no love, cause you's wassup
Look in the mirror, like what the fuck
Damn, I look good
And can't nobody freak it like I could
Yeah, okay, I got a little fat butt
My shorty tell me he like it like that
I'm happy, another me there never can be
See, I'm so outstanding
Don't care if they can't stand me
I'm sittin on top of the world LIKE BRANDY

[Chorus 1:]
See I look too good for this necklace
And I look too good to be wearin' this
You know I look way too good to be innocent
I'm conceited, I got a reason
See I look too good to be drivin' that
And I look too good to be buyin' that
You know I look way tood good to be tryin' that
I'm conceited, I got a reason

[Verse 2:]
Now who's that peekin' in my window
Nobody cause I live in a penthouse
Baby I'm sorry, but I'm sexy
And all I want you to do is just bless me, let's see
This kid that I'm waitin' on
He said he love when my jeans look painted on
With this tight white tee, you ain't quite like me
Probably why I'm always gettin' hated on
Now shorty tryin' to push up on me like a wonder bra
Listen when I speak, I wouldn't want you to take it wrong
Now, number one, I don't need you
And it's true, I only see you when I see you
Listen, two, you could never play me (why's that)
Cuz I'm such a fuckin' lady
Three, it's all about me
I don't wanna talk about it
If you love to hear it, here it go
I wrote a song about it

[Chorus 2:]
See I look too good to be fuckin' you
And I look too good to be lovin' you
You know I look way too good to be stuck with you
I'm conceited, I got a reason
See I look too good to be gettin whipped
And I look too good to be havin' kids
You know I look way too good to be in a crib
I'm conceited, I got a reason

[Verse 3:]
Oh, I know what I'm doin'
I can't stop my body from movin'
I'm boppin' and poppin' to the music
He keeps watchin' me and he's about to lose it
I'm droppin' it hotter then the DOGFATHER SNOOP DID
Face down, ass up, on some new shit
I'm outta control wit it, dip it low, pick it up slow
Poke it out, now roll wit it
My thong showin', but it's cool, my shoes go wit' it
Now all I need is a room wit a pole in it
See I look good and I'm knowin' it
And I was never too proud to be showin' it

"Conceited" is ok but i can't listen to female rappers.

THE LYRICAL MR PERFECT, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Especially not ugly female rappers.

THE LYRICAL MR PERFECT, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

haha not even Babs from Da Band's verse on the Black Rob album?

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

not even "Phyllis Diller's Rap"?

Da Na Not! (donut), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Nah, they shoulda took that joint off and put the "business never personal" Neptunes joint on there instead.

Every dope track i hear by a female rapper has me like "why didn't ___ get this beat instead?"

Talib Kweli has the same effect.

I wish "afro puffs" was a Snoop or Dogg Pound track.

THE LYRICAL MR PERFECT, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:30 (twenty years ago)

"Conceited" is ok but i can't listen to female rappers

you're a fucking idiot.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:30 (twenty years ago)

i mean what next "i can't listen to black musicians"?

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Was there a Joan Rivers rap song too? Or was it Bea Arthur?

Da Na Not! (donut), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Shouts to Lil' Kim on "..benjamins" and the handful of dope Junior Mafia tracks she was on, though.

THE LYRICAL MR PERFECT, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Sorry but there's no place in rap for female rhymers. It's wrong on every level.

There is room for video sluts, though.

THE LYRICAL MR PERFECT, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:34 (twenty years ago)

"Tempo Girls"

Da Na Not! (donut), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

You have so many email address, how will video sluts know how to contact you?

to Al - i guess rumors of True Story bricking were greatly exaggerated - I was under the impression it had bombed.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Y!S!I! this sounds amazing

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:18 (twenty years ago)

well, True Story definitely was no blockbuster, but I believe it went gold, it just didn't really do what I guess people were expecting from an album with a #1 single. such is the fate of most group albums, though.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 00:39 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

Uh:

Bronx, New York rapper Remy Ma is being sought in connection with a shooting in Manhattan this morning at 4:00 am.

While details of the shooting are emerging, sources told AllHipHop.com that Remy Ma was in the area of W. 14th Street and Washington Street this morning when she argued with a woman in a blue Escalade.

Police received a 911 call of a person being shot and found an unidentified woman with a gunshot wound to her lower torso.

Sources stated that the woman shot was a part of Remy Ma's entourage and that the two may have argued earlier in the evening at a local bar.

Remy Ma, born Remy Smith, allegedly fled the scene after the shooting and crashed the Escalade a few blocks later, escaping on foot.

Because "Bitches be fuckin' for tracks" -- RIGHT?

Andy K, Saturday, 14 July 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

REMY MA IS SO GULLY.
also "concieted" is soooooooooooooooo hard.
i'm assuming everyone's seen the Shesus Christ mixtape cover?

Jordan Sargent, Saturday, 14 July 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think threads about a rapper's music need to be revived anytime they (allegedly) commit a crime. Just because the media only talks about these people when they're arrested doesn't mean we have to follow suit. Shit isn't really interesting to discuss anyway.

Alex in Baltimore, Saturday, 14 July 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

in all seriousness:
if remy goes away for more than 2 years, can we declare female hip-hop dead, or at the very least on a serious fucking hiatus?
lost in this whole crucifix mixtape hoopla is that remy ma was actually putting out a mixtape. none of your foxys/kims/shawnas/trinas etc. are putting out albums, let alone mixtapes.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)

remy's stonefaced gulliness seconded.

kim and trina aren't all that overdue new material, it'd be nice to hear from one or both this year though.

poor foxy though lol@tumbleweave.

hoping for some more good stuff from rasheeda...'georgia peach' is probably my favourite ho-rap cut since 'b r right'.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 09:37 (eighteen years ago)

Kim is working on a new album due out late this year (or early next year). Normally I'd be excited (<i>Hardcore</i> is a top 10 record of mine), but her latest verses have been kind of meh, and she has recently reunited with Diddy. Seeing as reuninting with Diddy resulted in the worst Mary J Blige album (Love & Life, which isn't bad by any means, just sort of stale), I'm kind of skeptical about the whole thing...

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 09:44 (eighteen years ago)

"According to a police source in the Daily News, 'they beat her bad. They ripped out her hair weave. Her hair was a mess – and that seems to be what she cared about most.'"

can't knock the hustle.

also if remy goes away for a while, i'll actually be really sad. "conceited" is one of the most calamitous rap singles of the past two years. no female rapper had swagged that hard since "pull over" imo.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 09:50 (eighteen years ago)

I was really excited about the Remy Ma + Shawnna + Jackie O SUPERGROUP but unfortunately it fell through.. :( Remy Ma rules, I'm glad she left Terror Squad because they were really doing her dirty...

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

second the supergroup anticipation, even though remy raps circles around those other two. it was also pretty rad that they were on some feminist shit w/r/t the group's formation.

also, if there is anyone gullier than remy ma, it's jackie o.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

sadly jacki-o's tracks don't quite match up to her gulliness though

did i hear that trina had a miscarriage recently or was that someone else?

What do you guys think of her new song "Fresh"?

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.zshare.net/audio/15410058c32989/

"I get compliments like MA' YOU FRESH/ And I'm just takin' out tha garbage DAMN I aint even dressed!"

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

"who's that peekin' in my window? nobody cos i live in a PENTHOUSE"

one of those lines where i distinctly remember exactly where i was when i heard it. i love how she slurs the the l on "live" for half a second... to me it makes the line.

did i hear that trina had a miscarriage recently or was that someone else?

i'm pretty sure it was wayne's baby, but i could be wrong.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

re: "fresh"

the beat makes her sound kind of epic and godly (kinda like "we takin over" i think), but i'm not a huge fan of her slow flow.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 10:17 (eighteen years ago)

'fresh' is hott.

going back over old stuff, i was a lot more taken with 'whuteva' last night than i was at the time...those spiralling synths, pretty vertiginous.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 09:08 (eighteen years ago)
