I'm tired of seeing no threads on ILM that I want to read, so I thought I'd try to make one that would inspire sweeping generalizations, name-calling, and maybe even some of the more productive kinds of ILM talk. So yeah, this is not UK vs. USA on hip-hop or house music or punk specifically. It's UK vs. USA on EVERYTHING! Everything musical, that is. It would be especially awesome if this didn't just come down to where we are all from. Speaking of which, I apologize to the Aussies and Europeans and South Americans and Asians and everybody. I'm sure it shows my bias, but I think this choice says a lot about one's tastes and the sorts of excesses one is able to put up with.

Okay, just to make it clear: the reasons this thread is different from the above two are two-fold. First, this is not just in the present; this is all of history. Second, this is not just pop/rock. This is jazz, electronic, everything. So to get conversation started again, I will justify my Minutemen answer. Aside from my belief that the UK had no equivalent to them (but then again, neither did the US after they broke up), I would say the Minutemen are a completely American phenomenon because, to my ear, there are no influences there that are not American. CCR, Captain Beefheart, The Ramones, Ornette Coleman (okay, maybe the last is a bit tenuous): all Americans. Thus, the UK cannot take credit for their existence in any way. Which is unlike, say, grime.

You might try the same trick with THe Libertines, whose influences at first sight seem to be 100% Brit: Jam, Clash, Kinks, a bit of music hall, those redcoats. Scratch the surface and there's more, however. Doherty described their sound as the melody of Django Reindhardt plus the aggression of the Stooges. No British or American music has existed in isolation from each other since the 60s.
