New Orleans Record Shops

Going to New Orleans from Sunday through Friday, on a school-sponsored trip. Wanna support the local economy the best way I know how— buying albums. Any recommendations for really great New Orleans stores? (I'll be staying in Jefferson Parish, if that helps). Any great local music that I should look to pick up?
(As an aside, any good vegetarian restaurants that I should hit up?)

Go the fuck to Louisiana Music Factory. It's on Decatur street on the edge of the quarter (down from duMonde) and it's open. Pick up some or all of the following:

New Birth Brass Band, D-Boy
Rebirth Brass Band, Hot Venom
Hot 8 Brass Band, Rock With the Hot 8
Lil' Rascals Brass Band, Buck It Like a Horse
Stooges Brass Band, It's About Time
Treme Brass Band, Gimme My Money Back
Leroy Jones, Mo' Cream from the Crop
Bob French, Livin' the Legacy

LMF seconded. Louisiana music, they have it.

Google will show you New Orleans vegetarian restaurants. Hmmm, maybe somebody else can vouch for specific ones. I used to like some of the writing of Brett Anderson, the New Orleans Times-Picayune's restaurant critic, who wrote about food and music, when he was in D.C. Offbeat magazine and Gambit (alt weekly/monthly? paper) also cover restaurants (and music). A blog called "looka" (I don't have the link handy) often covers New Orleans food, and it may have veggie restaurant listings also.

You are shit out of luck re: vegetarian restaurants, dude. Juan's Flying Burrito on Magazine St in the Lower Garden District has veggie/vegan stuff, as do many of the Vietnamese places, most of which are still closed. The last "real" vegetarian place, Old Dog New Trick, is a bar now.

Honestly, forget the vegetarian thing while you're here and you'll be a whole lot happier. Eat po boys and crawfish ($$$ as fuck this season, DAMN YOU KATRINA) and Hubig's pies and boudin.

Thanks to Katrina, LMF is the only game in town for record shopping. Magic Bus is gone (pre-K tho), Rocks Off is gone, I have no idea about Peaches. Jim Russell Records (near Juan's on Magazine) is overpriced and run by a megalomaniacal goon. Even fucking Virgin is closed and Tower only open 3 days a week. Thank god for the Internet.

If I forget about the whole vegetarian thing, I have a habit of puking. Which kinda cancels out the fun of eating crawfish or pulled pork.

So... LMF it is. And Juan's, along with Vietnamese places (ethnic dining's pretty much my mainstay anyway, so cool).

Thanks!

Listen to Jordan and pick up that Hot 8 record. It's amazing.

Jim Russell Records, 1837 Magazine St. might have some but see Adam's warning about the store above. I forget whether Louisiana Music Factory carries 45s, but you should go there anyway.

You might want to e-mail Dan Phillips who has an awesome r'n'b/soul 45s blog and lived in New Orleans and now lives nearby--

jim russell has dropped their prices (a little bit)--the woman that runs the place now sits there with record guide in hand so it's hard to slip a gem past her, but business sucks and she knows she's gotta be a little nice.

there is a newish store on bayou rd called domino sound that is all vinyl with some cassettes. they are closed on mon and tues i think but they are worth a trip.

LMF has 45s. they def know what they are selling and charge accordingly but i have made good finds in there when i put in the time.

adam, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

domino is the place around the corner from broadview, right? i've been there a couple times when they've had Hot 8 play out front, i like it.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

I saw that. I never made it out there to Ville Platte, Louisiana. At least there will still be an online presence.

Used to love Magic Bus. Too bad it's gone. Was cool when it was actually on the bus by the market but much easier to deal with when they moved.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

went to Louisiana Music Factory in August, it was cool

didn't make it over to Euclid Records but if it's as good as the St. Louis one (same owners) it would be worth a visit

dmr, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

euclid's all right but crazy fucking expensive. which i guess is the nature of independent record store these days but still.

magic bus was the best. used to spend entire lunch hours in there, discussing like terry riley or magma or whatever. smelled good too in that record store way.

adam, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:44 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the St. Louis Euclid is expensive for rock and jazz. some other genres you can find deals.

dmr, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:08 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that's true, i did pull most of the patrice rushen discography out of the 3 for 5 bins

adam, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:13 (thirteen years ago)

Was at Louisiana Music Factory in September. Two staff members were going at each other — yelling and dropping F-bombs — over a DVD or CD one of them had failed to return to the other in a timely fashion. I thought they were going to come to blows.

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:27 (thirteen years ago)

I need to order some New orleans soul stuff and bayou zydeco online from them
