from a Saint-Saens symphony.
i think it was an 80s tune that nabbed it.

(reached no.3 in the UK charts on 18.2.78, and is no.45 in TV Cream's 100 greatest singles of all time FWIW - They say "Nobody remembers this now, alas, but it's dead Christmassy and great, a sort of reggae-lite rewrite of that Saint-Saens piece from Babe with "spiritual" lyrics and kids singing and stuff. Better than that sounds, believe us.")

I have on opposite question: the chorus of this song, which begins at 0:20, uses a very recognisable melody. I'm sure it's either from some old/traditional song, but I can't for the life of me remember which one.

Trying to figure out where I've heard this flute melody before. ṣānnu yārru lī by Susanne Sundfør. It reminds me of something - jazz fusion or funk or afrobeat maybe?
At 0:43 in the video below, in case the timestamp doesn't work.

Is it the "ridin' the gravy tra - aa - aa - ain" part of Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar"? That's what it reminds me of.

rhythm track sounds like War's "Low Rider" slowed to a crawl

I hear “Aquarius” and a non-syncopated version of “Superfly”

Curtis Mayfield wasn't it, but your suggestion led me down the path to Mayfield-coverers Fishbone. The flute in that Sundfor song is very similar to the horn part from Pouring Rain, at about 0:19 in the video below:
