The Monks vids from YouTube - Classic or Dud?

What was to follow was some links, but "Searching for videos is temporarily unavailable"

Shall assume its temporary for now.

Anyhow, after getting and seeing most if not all of what's available, has it coloured your appreciation of them?

I guess, after hearing the "Five Upstart Americans" and the reunion live one, I decided they were less the "punk band 20 years too early" and more "American bar band got lucky", based on the tracks "Hushi Pushi" and the (so far unheared but well described in the book) "Don't (ha-ha)".

So, the videos are more of the 'smile when performing' school, but then again there's the 'sling the guitar on the floor and we all pick at it' deconstruction on the prelude to "Oh how to do now"

Mind you, there's no call for Mr M.Ellen to describe "Cuckoo" as "the worst abomination ever recorded", although it is admittedly my least favourite Monks track.

But, in the end, classic. Even if only so we can see exactly what it was all about.

Very, very classic.

Harpal (harpal), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 09:35 (eighteen years ago) link

unbelievably fucking classic. some of the coolest musical footage i've ever seen in my life.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 10:47 (eighteen years ago) link

The "everyone with two tambourines" attack on "Monk Chant" is totally wonderful.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 10:53 (eighteen years ago) link

classic up your assic.

baby, disco is fuck (yournullfame), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 11:45 (eighteen years ago) link

when i watch those clips i am convinced that the monks invented punk rock, krautrock, no wave, microhouse, heavy metal, post-punk, and maybe dancehall too. and the modern polka sound. and industrial music.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 12:20 (eighteen years ago) link

there's nothing bar band about that clip where they put the guitar on the floor and they all start beating it untill it screams with noise and feedback all the while the drummer keeps a tribal beat...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 14:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I was meaning the "Cuckoo" clip only.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 14:21 (eighteen years ago) link

scott OTM. Dan, tribal is the best word for a lot of what they were doing, right? Percussive guitar sounds, nearly motorik beats...their look just throws a lot of people. They almost look like one of those visiting bands in town on Andy Griffith Show, besides the wack hair.

CLAAASSSIIC

cobra killer sampled a couple of monks songs on their 76/77 cd, though not that specific thing.

can i get some more info on the monks. i read somewhere they were called something else then changed their sound and names to the monks. was anyone a key influence in their change

charlie bucket (charlie bucket), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:17 (eighteen years ago) link

They were called "The Torquays" and were american air force stationed in Germany, and played covers in the bar. Correctly guessing that their normal set wouldn't be effective when they played outside the confines of the US airbases, they made a conscious decision to simplify their lyrics and cut their sound to the bare essentials. Someone came up with the "Monks" name, the idea evolved, and so on...

"NO-ONE has ever come out with a complete album of such insanity." --cope, on the monks

also declares them the 'missing link' and refers to their songs, among other phrases, as an 'acid West Side Story'

four weeks pass...
I watched them all but the one featuring "Monk Chant" and "How To Do, Now" is just ridiculous. Punk rock/Kraut Rock drums lead into distorted bass Lemmy would have appreciated; they all writhe atop a fallen guitar eminating squeals of feedback making Sonic Youth redundant and boring; strange lyrics are chanted and so fun making Beefheart a bitter bitch; '60s beat kids dancing but with a look on their face that says they're not sure why.

Then I read the band's website from start to finish, laughing at some of the stories like how they "invented" feedback, and how they intentionally wanted to remove melody from music and I realize, that I am in the presence of a band that anticipated all of the dissonant music that I would come to love and do it a few years before I was born.

I sent a clip to my dad who used to have a hell of a record collection. I hope he likes it.

I sent a clip to a lifelong friend who was the punk rocker in high school to my metalhead and she responded thusly:

"and this is why I love you too! you send me awesome
shit like this. guess what just got added to my
amazon wish list?!

a totally golden nugget! Thanks."

My only regret is that it took me this long to find out about this wonderful band.

Anyone who says dud is the enemy.

I am happy that a bunch of clips from recent Monks shows have appeared on YouTube however the classic ones seem to all be gone and this makes me sad. I mean, I would pay for those videos, man...

NYCNative, Monday, 2 April 2007 18:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Records & songs are great and all that, classic.

But that live footage for "Oh, How to Do" and "Monk Chant" is from other planets. There is no word for the classic. Combination of beat freedom, speed frenzy, noise, and cro-mag pounding = some of the most amazing music/performance I've ever seen. Life altering. Everything cool about late 20th century rock music rolled up into a little ball and set on fire. First saw it a year a year-and-a-half, two years ago, and have yet to recover.

Were they actually playing live on Beat Club? I know shows like that are almost always mimed but thought I heard a little feedback and there’re was a bit at the beginning where it looked like a microphone wasn’t on.
