also - whatever happened to political music in britain?

dave q (listerine), Sunday, 26 March 2006 08:14 (twenty years ago)

Weller vs Mackaye - interesting bout, both in pretty good shape.

Political music - still going on, but generally derided, not least around here.

Does Weller still do political music? I fell asleep sometime around the Small Faces covers. Ian Mackaye on the other hand is JESUS.

I love that people are still trotting out Ian Mackaye strawmen from like 1983.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 26 March 2006 16:45 (twenty years ago)

matt otm, harshing on Mackaye for being straightedge is sorta like complaining that Jimmy Carter's doing a terrible job of running the country

however I do think it's fair to ask (what Dave is doing I think) what the lineage is from Mackaye or Weller

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 26 March 2006 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Mackaye = 20+ years of great music and lots of horrible imitators.
Weller = 2 or 3 albums worth of great music and lots of really horrible imitators.

Weller has his faults, but damn if I don't have a soft spot for 'im. I mean even if you ignore everything else, his voice on some of those Style Council records is just amazing.

Style Council is easily my favourite Weller stuff, it's the only reason I have any time for him at all.

I dunno how anyone can not like sound affects

....and as for my ian mackaye " harshing" ..fuck...is he that much of a god to seppos.....was only a wee joke - c'mon

grapple (grapple), Monday, 27 March 2006 01:55 (twenty years ago)

wot means "seppos"

I think you missed the point grapple - the point is, the last time mackaye made any issue at all out of straightedge was twenty-plus years ago: the only people who think "garr that sanctimonious twat!" are themselves sanctimonious twats, just of a diff. persuasion, 'cause as I say the last time mackaye did any "lecturing" about straight edge was fuckin' 1983

Noodle, your spot as my favourite ILM poster has just been cemented, it's official etc.
