Farewell, shameless abuser of Brian Wilson's collapsed psyche.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I wonder what would have happened to him if he hadn't worked with Landy?

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 19:02 (twenty years ago)

gosh, crazy Brian's gonna outlive us all

(really really shamed to admit that my first thought was "ok, when is that other shameless abuser of Wilson's psyche who's last name is Love" going to come next?)

Anyway, about Landy... well, he was equal pro as con for Wilson, wasn't he. Maybe Wilson would have been better off without him, but without Landy, Wilson may have possibly ended up in a worse ditch 20 years ago, too.

It was great seeing Brian Wilson live last year, if for anything to see that the guy's definitely got a drive, still, especially having to deal with various compatriots and family of his dropping dead around him one by one. :(

This guy was evil, although it's possible he did save Wilson's life.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Yoo Doo Nut otm - Wilson would have been considerably worse off without Landy, whatever else one wants to say about him

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

He also could have been considerably better off with a decent, ethical psychologist.

darin (darin), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:59 (twenty years ago)

that's probably true, but i think his abuse of his position is pretty indefensible, so i'm not sure where that leaves us - good that he came along, better that he left

Putting aside the apparent abuse of Brian (though I agree Landy's care was better than no care), he is the reason the song 'Smart Girls' exists and that is unforgivable. Brian Wilson rapping is something noone should ever have to hear.

(cue standard reference to Mike Love rapping on Fat Boys "Wipe Out" 12-inch)

one of my fondest memories is interviewing Brian Wilson in the spring of 1987, while he was preparing his first solo album. he was slightly twitchy and awkward, but also warm and accomodating. his warner bros publicist and a "personal assistant" discreetly faded into the background while Brian and I sat on a couch. he considered my questions, gave disarmingly frank answers ("the Beach Boys? ah those guys are bunch of assholes!") and for 40 minutes or so the whole thing was a young writer's dream. and then the infamous Dr. Landy arrived: from the minute he entered the room Brian stiffened up, basically stopped talking and started looking over to Landy for approval every time I'd ask a question. it really creeped me out.

Hating on Mike Love, how fucking boring

He also worked with Alice Cooper, who morphed into some golf-playing Republican fuckhead.

four years pass...

It's his post-solo album treatment that remains the most abusive
