can't tell if my careometer's broken or just giving an infinitely low reading.

Wow. Led Zep opening for The Cribs.

What a disaster.

PEARL JAM!!!!

i am actually excited by this.

Reading weekend tickets are already sold out.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Pondering which day now.

Friday looks the 'safe' day, Sat has the 'edge' but may be too 'sweary' for kids (although bad language tends to wash over them).

I can imagine Alice going for Fall Out Boy.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:19 (eighteen years ago) link

This takes place on the Lex's birthday!

it does not! though the sat is my sister's bday.

as far as i'm concerned, after luring yyys out of the site, the best policy would be to bomb everything else.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:32 (eighteen years ago) link

why do you shill for the ghastly yyys?*

*roffle at plan b cover caption: 'we've etched ourselves into history' omgrofl

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:41 (eighteen years ago) link

i like the yyys! i even have their new album though i haven't listened to it yet. i am not going to go near talking about the plan b cover online though. ts: "image music text" vs "we've etched ourselves into history" gnnnnnngh.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:43 (eighteen years ago) link

they have too many guitars for my liking.

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:44 (eighteen years ago) link

GREAT things about the new plan b: david's knife interview, frances's battles live review, my ellen allien review, melissa's spank rock feature. :D

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:44 (eighteen years ago) link

girls cancel out guitars nrq, you know that.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I hope to Spirograph myself into history

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

actually, being serious, what cancels out the guitars is a basic knowledge of rhythm - ditto with the kills (cos they have a drum machine) and that gossip single. they're all electro bangers in disguise.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:46 (eighteen years ago) link

i suppose it's her i really dislike. at least on the cover her hair isn't quite as much a disaster as usual.

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:48 (eighteen years ago) link

i like karen o, and her hair, both in its usual mess and on the front cover. and i like her voice. 'date with the night' was my token indie jam in whatever year it was released! and 'bang' was always great.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:55 (eighteen years ago) link

do the Kills do anything remotely interesting with that drum machine? The single sounded like Suicide-lite and everything else I've heard from them has been 100% pure tedium.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 11:02 (eighteen years ago) link

do the Kills do anything remotely interesting with that drum machine?

no, but at least it keeps time, which puts it way ahead of 90% of indie drummers. the kills know how to keep their songs...simple, i guess? i really like the first album and the song 'no wow', i like the chemistry between the two voices...i wouldn't ever try to sell them to you though fandango!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 11:13 (eighteen years ago) link

no, but at least it keeps time, which puts it way ahead of 90% of indie drummers.

russell simins wants a word with you, Lex...

i am not a nugget (stevie), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 11:23 (eighteen years ago) link

The Kills are just a fifth-rate indie-sex act. Morningwood > The Kills.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 11:26 (eighteen years ago) link

i've never heard of him, stevie!

i think my views may stem from the fact that i only really listen to music with beats made on computers, they have turned me off humans forever...

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 11:29 (eighteen years ago) link

dom, morningwood are complete crap.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 11:31 (eighteen years ago) link

>> as far as i'm concerned, after luring yyys out of the site, the best policy would be to bomb everything else.

Shock! I actually agree with the Lex!

Although I think the Futureheads and B&S are OK. Wish the lineup didn't suck so bad, I haven't been to a festival in a couple of years and couldn't afford ATP, now financial problems are on their way out I could have probably gone.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 11:54 (eighteen years ago) link

these Reading/ Leeds line ups get worse each year.

it's like choose high profile/ mainstream alt tripe playlisted by xfm/ virgin plus whatever NME is hyping.

ihttp://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1316/2049/1600/LeedsLineup.jpg

Compare UK: Leeds/ Reading with European festivals such Primavera Sound and Roskilde: they have a far more eclectic, experimental and diverse line ups

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 12:05 (eighteen years ago) link

How on earth do Pearl Jam get to headline a UK music festival?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 12:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Presumably like how Green Day got to do theirs 2 years ago: Big album coming up.

I mean, it's pretty cool that amidst the kind of stuff you'd expect Rob da Bank to put on (Tom Middleton, Devendra Banhart)and the slightly wacky air to proceedings, they've found room for Skream, Digital Mystikz and Kode 9. I bet you won't see a dubstep tent at too many festivals this summer!

And Lindstrom and Prins Thomas are on too and The Fall.

I guess that if you build the rep of the festival rather than the bill (like Glastonbury), you can put whatever the hell you like on. There aren't really any bankable names there, are there.

Reading and V are rather soulless affairs outside the main bill, so they perhaps feel the need to follow the crowds. I don't really understand, though, as if they are selling out so fast anyway (Brit youth loves its festivals), they could take a few risks.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:57 (eighteen years ago) link

The evidence is clear our European Brothers/ Sisters have more diverse line ups compared to the main Brit festivals. Reason: British media is conservative, controlled bollox !

tori's 'heart of gold' isn't even that good compared to most of her stuff! it's just better than the mimsy-as-fuck original and neil young's disgustingly weedy voice.

Bring back Comedy Tents!

They have boring festivals abroad too, they just don't bother marketing them to foreigners, probably because the locals can afford to go.

xpost - can you really blame the media completely?

The main British festival, Glastonbury, has a more diverse line-up then pretty much any other. Also it has less to do with the media and more to do with the fact the Mean Fiddler's marketing department knows exactly where its demographic is and exactly where the ticket sales are - and they aint in booking Superpitcher to play to a 3/4 empty tent.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 14:29 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah matt but it's about why is the demographic so rockcentric?

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 14:33 (eighteen years ago) link

yes, the media has a massive influence on what is/ what is not popular re the masses/ mainstream. Check your Media theory.

PR/ Pluggers are PAID by record labels to ensure maximum exposure.

check publications like Music Week and CMU Update: http://www.cmumusicnetwork.co.uk/default.asp
for the background workings of the music business

media exposure is the key: i am also convinced that 6 Music is controlled by NME/ Q / Word magazine reading chumps that don't have any of their own opinions/ ideas of music

e.g a guitar band that doesn't make radio 1 playlist, xfm, virgin, 6 music playlists are unlikely to achieve mainstream success. e.g in the UK Porcupine Tree have next to zilch radio play = they are just a cult band with a rabid following.

In the UK, Anathema never had mainstream success, although many of their albums are held in high esteem - the reason no Brit media exposure.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 14:42 (eighteen years ago) link

but then punk and rave did purty well without mainstream media backing...

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 14:50 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm presuming this little bubble in which media exposure automatically guarantees mainstream success for Anathema is the same one in which Portsmouth fringe players get called up for England, but I'm bored of this argument frankly.

Record companies don't put big PR budgets behind bands unless they think there's a big market for them. If anything, it's the pluggers that are being conservative.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:02 (eighteen years ago) link

that is history:

punk was 1977 [read jon savage's book]
rave started to break in "The Summer of Love" 1988 [read simon reynolds second book]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Summer_of_Love

[John Peel also played a part in promoting the music of both scenes on his radio show: a typical Peel show in 88 had a healthy dose of electronic beats]

this is now ! different circumstances = notice ILM and others music boards moaning about how crap/ useless/ conformist music magazines are. [that can be extended to music radio and Tv]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

What about tyhose radio stations supposedly belonging to Q and Mojo? They don't appear to have anything to do with those publications in actual fact. So what where why when?

Media coverage is far more unlikey for anyone but a very few big names (such as Shakira last week) in Spain, yet their festival(s) are being lauded for eclecticism. So I don't think it's the media.

If you were a hip band you probably wouldn't want to play one of those shitty festivals anyway. Surely they are the least rewarding gigs, apart from financially. Hello, ocean of dickheads in wellies!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Also Glastonbury has also become more conservative in recent years - the line-ups this decade have generally been worse than in the 90s i'd say.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Is it just that the organiser of Roskilde, Benicassim etc. just aren't very 'clued up' in marketing terms, compared to Mean Fiddler or whoever. they've not bothered with the calculations so they've just booked a more diverse line-up out of an optimistic belief they can please everyone and it won't result in only 1/4 full tents or whatever? or maybe 1/4 full tents aren't such a problem for them? is it naivety rather than passion and open-mindedness?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:22 (eighteen years ago) link

One thing about Benicassim is that they attract a lot more bands by giving them free drinks all weekend and having a swimming pool backstage. Not being the brightest, rock stars are willing to play for less money than usual.

Also, different bands are popular there, so what may seeem daring to us might not be all that daring to them.

I think they probably have subsidies too, but I don't know for sure. For example, Barcelona city council loves Primavera sound and Sonar because it brings lots of people in who spend shitloads of money.

Roskilde ethos: is non profit

[Also their line ups are hand picked by Roskilde commitee of 5 rather than be block booked by a commercial promoter such as Mean Fiddler]

The values and objectives of Roskilde Festival [from Roskilde website]

Roskilde Festival aims to provide an annual festival of music and culture, where every participant can enjoy all aspects of music, community spirit, service, quality and safety. A key goal for Roskilde Festival is to be a progressive and up-to-date cultural and political event. With strict opinions on the environment and recycling as well as humanitarian, public and cultural efforts, Roskilde Festival aims to reflect and influence the situation in the world and the society in which we live.

Furthermore, Roskilde Festival is, to the extent possible, based on voluntary assistance from people who care more about a high quality festival than about personal gain and who always do their utmost to improve the quality, values and financial situation of the festival, as well as the safety of and care for the audience and other participants.

Any and all profits from Roskilde Festival are donated to humanitarian, cultural or other work for the public good, including work on behalf of children and adolescents.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:35 (eighteen years ago) link

you're right PJM, in that Benicassim has the extra allure of being close to Barcelona, the established eurogeois/tourism/glamour aspect and all that.

Roskilde is bigger than Reading but smaller than Glastonbury right?

Pashmina is right of course

NME and Sounds in 1977 - embraced PUNK. They also had a much larger readership and influence in those days. Sex Pistols in December 1976 appeared on mainstream British TV and famously SWORE at Bill Grundy.

in 1998 or 1999: ACID was on the front cover of the tabloids, tales of Warehouse parties/ Outdoor raves were mainstream reported news.

Roskilde Festival
http://www.roskilde-festival.dk/object.php?obj=6e3000c&code=1

Music profile

Roskilde Festival’s audience expects extraordinary and unique experiences. Therefore, the festival presents contemporary, legendary, progressive and innovating quality music.

Roskilde Festival will not allow itself to rely on the success of previous festivals – it takes aim at being an innovative and challenging festival that presents the young talents of today and tomorrow. Roskilde Festival concentrates on quality, innovation, and variation – not on becoming the biggest, the cosiest or the most established festival. Over the years, the festival has gained a solid foundation of experience and routine. However, Roskilde Festival still wants to be cutting edge and innovative.

Seeing that the audience expects the festival to continue being a relevant, exciting and surprising event, we will do our utmost to meet this demand. At the festivals to come, there will be less of the predictable ’big acts’ and more surprises and new names, with a few carefully selected ’highlights’ from the established acts, both Danish and international, to look forward to.

Roskilde Festival’s trademark is – and continues to be – a large share of unpredictability, nerve and gut – coupled with a minor touch of the well-known stars of today.
