peepee (peepee), Sunday, 16 April 2006 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Alright, advise me as to what's unmissable (and why)

peepee (peepee), Sunday, 16 April 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig are performing as well

manuel (manuel), Sunday, 16 April 2006 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Alex Under, German minimal techno artist

Presumably he's from the Madrid that's in Bavaria.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Sunday, 16 April 2006 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Alex Under, Ark & The Orb are the besht ones off the bat for me. tho i saw The Orb just three weeks ago (and it was amaaaaazing). :)
can't wait!!

something less threatening (heywood), Monday, 17 April 2006 01:59 (twenty years ago)

I've never seen the Orb, but friends who saw them a dozen or so years ago says they were amazing live back then. Their later albums seemed less than lacklustre. Are they back on track??? Or did their live sets never wane?

peepee (peepee), Monday, 17 April 2006 02:04 (twenty years ago)

if i can find a place to crash in detroit and can work out a plane ticket, i think i will definitely try to make it out to this.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 17 April 2006 02:07 (twenty years ago)

I will be there with (the) bells on. :) It's my yearly pilgrimage.

tylero (tylero), Monday, 17 April 2006 02:25 (twenty years ago)

The only person on that I've seen is Adam Marshall, and I love him, he put on one of the most intense live performances I've ever seen, probably the most, it was a performance with someone else, but it was still quite nuts.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Monday, 17 April 2006 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Function and Regis are NOT to be missed. Hard techno is an understatement

Sr. Intel, Sunday, 23 April 2006 19:52 (twenty years ago)

tylero - i've gone 4 out of six years, last year would've been the 5th in a row but i couldn't go, i was gutted.

something less threatening (heywood), Sunday, 23 April 2006 22:04 (twenty years ago)

What are the odds that this line-up will actually materialize?

Erick H (Erick H), Monday, 24 April 2006 14:04 (twenty years ago)

I have my doubts, but it will be cool if it really happens.

Detroit Fight Club Founder Speaks Out About 2006 Festival
-------------------------------------------------------------
This was posted on deephousemusic.com for the educational purposes. The festival is and should be a celebration of the DETROIT music scene, its evolution from the dark days and the people, producers and DJs who help shape the DETROIT music scene.
-------------------------------------------------------------

What the hell does Detroit having "one single successful house night" have to do with the purpose of the festival. The purpose is to pay homage to the true spirit and history of Detroit dance. Sorry if you don't understand that house music and classics were being played and came BEFORE techno. And even if we're talking techno, true techno as mentioned is that of retro-Detroit, Derrick, Juan, Kevin and others. This is the techno I myself could put into any house set or any hot music set to be specific. I realized after I mailed off a submission package to Paxahau, what the hell did I do submitting a package to a company called Paxahau. How the heck is this organization qualified to 1)judge hotness and 2) understand how deep and rich the history of house/Detroit techno goes and 3) respect the integrity, blood, sweat and tears of our music and culture.

Why do people mention race? Because it is RELEVANT. Of course music is for all, no sh*t Sherlock! The point is that when disco music surfaced (the precursor to all this sh*t), it was underground, black/latino and gay. Go check your history. So while we were ostracized by mainstream, we created, produced, and dj'd our own music on our own terms, we were free in our underground. Everyone who embraced it was welcome, including white folks. Of course there are pioneers that are not black, such as David Mancuso, Nicki Siano, Francois K, etc. But they will tell you they were inspired by black music.

So fast forward to 2006 and a Detroit Music Festival. What a damn shame to know there will be a lack of the truth. Detroit was its illest dj's including Mojo, The Wizard, The Maestro, Reckless Ron Cook, Will Guest, Gary Chandler, Terrence Parker, Duane in the Mix, Al Ester, Ken Collier, Direct Drive, the list goes on. Even Theo Parrish is actually a late addition to the history of what it was back in the day. Theo only recently came to the D in 1995 (and Lord knows I love me some Theo). In fact, if you are from Detroit and didn't shop at Buy Rite Music back in the day, you cannot possibly give justice to the true history of Detroit. If you have no connection with Daryl,Darnell, Rick Wilhite...something will be missing.

This email is obviously at Detroit cats on here and they will know what I'm talkin' bout!

I forgot why I even wrote this email, guess I'm just another pissed off dj from Detroit that feels my city's history is not being given justice.

Oh, and I'd be happy to address anyone Detroit imposter on the tables--like it should be and how it was back in the day.

DJ Slim Fast, Wednesday, 26 April 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

What are the odds that this line-up will actually materialize?

-- Erick H (eshaigh...), April 24th, 2006

i'd say pretty good considering Paxahau is running it–the first time since year two that an actual promotions company has the festival's reins

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

That post about "what Detroit techno REALLY is about" is really funny.

How the heck is this organization qualified to 1)judge hotness and 2) understand how deep and rich the history of house/Detroit techno goes and 3) respect the integrity, blood, sweat and tears of our music and culture.

And the answer is because Paxahau has actually been successfully booking electronic music in Detroit and stepped up to the plate to organize this year's festival. I'm pretty sure the Music Institute has been closed for a while now. Can we get on with it already?

Anyway, good sign that they actually managed to get corporate sponsorship this time around. I'm thinking this year's DEMF might be the excuse I need to finally head back to Detroit.

(Hi KT!)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

hey aaron! was thinking about you recently! call...

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 27 April 2006 01:20 (twenty years ago)

Well, plane ticket is booked. Anyone else going?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 6 May 2006 19:12 (twenty years ago)

just booked mine. anyone notice that Alex Under isn't on the lineup anymore? but Nitzer Ebb live!!!

something less threatening (heywood), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Wow, that's a lot of "legends" that I've never heard of. And the DETROIT!!!111one! parochialism is a big part of what killed the festival in year three. This bullshit about how we have to showcase people who are playing around Detroit instead of trying to bring in the best people in the world is so fucking tiring. Yeah, Detroit, we know you have an inferiority complex. Get the fuck over it. If Ghostly can't even field a decent night (their Spectral stage looks OK, but not great), shouldn't you give it up already?
And Nitzer Ebb and Chemlab? Is this '92?

J S posting on dad's computer (Quin Tillian), Saturday, 6 May 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Just got my weekend pass in the mail yesterday. It's on.
No, it's not '92, but when I saw that Nitzer Ebb were playing live, I'll admit that I got excited.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Sunday, 7 May 2006 00:36 (twenty years ago)

Just saw the updated lineup and it appears as though the Kompakt showcase is no longer a go. Shame.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 03:08 (twenty years ago)

What does Le Petit Orb mean?

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:13 (twenty years ago)

what you mean?

POP AMBIENT / KOMPAKT & FRIENDS
Donnacha Costello - live
Frank Martiniq
Jeremy P. Caulfield – live
Klimek - live
Markus Guentner
Mikkel Metal – live
Superpitcher

Le Petit Orb is more decks and efx than live techno making as i understand it.

banana sandwich (dayvidday), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

So, then The Orb ain't gonna be performing as a "band"?

(They're listed as Le Petit Orb - live

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I swear the update on the site yesterday did not include anything Kompakt. I even did a proper CTRL+F search for Kompakt on the page before posting here. Glad to see them reemerge.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

TWILIGHT 76 & DATABASS PRESENT “DETROIT: ELECTROBASS CAPITAL”
DJ Dick vs. Sekter .17 - live
DJ Godfather
Paul Martindale
Starski & Clutch

This will be awesome

Trace Henry (Trace), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I can probably only go one day... Whatever day the Electrobass is. No info on who is playing what day though.

Gavin, Friday, 12 May 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

so derrick may is playing in san francisco on the 28th. is this some kind of protest gesture or will he also be playing at DEMF?

breakfast pants (disco stu), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 02:31 (twenty years ago)

Derrick is playing the main stage on Monday.
http://www.elementeight.net/random/demf-schedule.htm

Anybody planning on going to any of the afterparties? My friends are playing at/putting on a few.

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Whats up, I am a 23m from the south suburbs of chicago right by 90/94 and halsted. Im trying to go to the fest but i dont have a ride yet. If anyone is in chicago and that can help me out just Email me back. thanks

Eric11, Tuesday, 23 May 2006 05:54 (twenty years ago)

Excited for this radness, despite the fact I'm missing saturday due to a wedding. Just noticed a spectral afterparty as well...spoilt for choice, as usual.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:26 (twenty years ago)

What are the recommendations for afterparties? The last couple of years they've been better than the fest, but I'm trying to plan ahead instead of just getting quarter sheets shoved into my hand...

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Everyone should see Shake at Oslo on Saturday night.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

2 more days until the madness starts with Konrad Black and Mathew Johnson at the official preparty! There's also a Perlon afterparty Sunday that I'm pretty excited about.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Le Petit Orb ain't really live, as in the older live Orb tours with a full band. Elsewhere on the internets, it states that its

Thomas Felhmann doing the live stuff on the Apple Mac and Alex Patterson 'playing' on the decks (read: occasionally fading in a record over the top of the live stuff)

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Can someone please tell me why there's never been any On-U Sound artists asked to play DEMF???

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

what's this about a perlon afterparty now?!?

Trace Henry (Trace), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Sunday May 28 @ The Masionic
GET PERLONIZED: DETROIT
$5 All Night
Audio Werner - live
Melchior Productions LTD. - live
Dandy Jack & the Junction SM
Sammy Dee
Zip

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Matthew Jonson on Friday night afterparty was incredible. That's how 'minimal' should be. Fuckin banging.

Also, first 'groove la chord' airing: 2:50pm saturday. That's only about 3 hours into the festival folks.

tylero (tylero), Saturday, 27 May 2006 19:36 (twenty years ago)

I went last year and now I live overseas. DEMF is all I miss about america.

Rave, shirtless, all night for me.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Saturday, 27 May 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

ditto, jonson was killer!

something less threatening (heywood), Sunday, 28 May 2006 06:23 (twenty years ago)

bummed i can't make it to this. i was trying for monday and it looks like that isn't happening.

more reports back please!

breakfast pants (disco stu), Sunday, 28 May 2006 15:41 (twenty years ago)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Sunday, 28 May 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

phil, you've been in europe too long! if this party goes through tomorrow afternoon i'll be shocked (and attending!)

something less threatening (heywood), Sunday, 28 May 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

btw audio werner was fucking KILLER & sammy dee smashed it! dandy jack was interesting but didn't really move me and whoever was playing when we got there (thomas melchior?) was kinda boring...but great party!!

something less threatening (heywood), Monday, 29 May 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

(weeps)

geeta (geeta), Monday, 29 May 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

2nded on the goodnes of the perlon party. no sleep last night.

Also, everybody can quit trying to be the man, because compared to Carl Craig, you'll just be in second place. It's kind of liberating to not worry about having to try for the top, actually. He was so awesome at the festival just now!

tylero (tylero), Monday, 29 May 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

he was the one unmissable (which i missed!) for me. :(

breakfast pants (disco stu), Monday, 29 May 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

relaxing in the hotel on tuesday a.m. here is my quick recap of the w/e

Friday: Matt Johnson amazing at opening party

Saturday: Dan Bell good, Pantytech good, Dandy Jack real good, Kooky Scientist AMAZING on the main stage. I wanted to pay more attention to Superpitcher but the underground stage was setup so horrible that I couldn't stand being there for more than a little while. I loved Rob Hood on the main stage, he was about the only guy that played a lot of Detroit Techno on the lineup.

Sunday: Got there early and parked it in the Twilight76/DataBass tent. What you expect from those guys. Starski and Clutch played a shambolic set of electronic funk classics, even started the set off with a recoding of Mojo's show opening speil. Godfather tears it up on the turntables, some girls were doing amazing dances. After that I caught KMS on the main stage (eh...nice and banging but a little non-subtle) and then Le Petit Orb. I wasn't expecting much from them after catching thier poor performance in LA, but they were great! Fehlman was jacking up and down behnd the Laptop, and their tracks sounded HUGE on the big system. Those Schaffel tracks they released on Kompakt made me very happy, and the way they worked 'Fluffy Clouds' in was swell.

Monday: Came straight from a seriously cracked out afters to catch Craig in the WAY TOO HOT sun. He was the best. Kompakt guys in the tent were great, and a welcome respite from the intense sun and intense beats everywhere else. Did we really need Adam X on the main stage at 2pm? No. Left for the hotel and came back to catch Derrick May throw down. He is the man, and one of my DJ heros. So much soul! Bangin and fun. Nitzer Ebb were o.k. Sounded a little quiet, didn't have a very dynamic setup. Good to hear all those tracks I liked back in H.S. though. Hawtin came on a little late after that and was really good. Left there and checked Mike Huckaby for a little while at the end of the night and was really glad I did. I really needed to hear that deep Detroit soulful sound. Great crowd over there too, friendly faces and good dancers. The perfect close to the fest for me.

Caught Hawtin at the afterparty at Oslo after that. I guess that was kind of a taste of what life in Berlin is like, pretty intense! I don't know how long I'd last!

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Anyone go to that DetUnd party at the Majestic on Sunday night? That looked really good, but I went to see Charles Gayle play a solo piano set and got home early Sunday night.

Derrick Carter was probably my favorite. That Greenskeeper house band were a lot of fun, at least the little bit I caught. I've confirmed that I'm not a huge fan of the Perlon/microhouse style after seeing several DJ/live sets of that style, but Dandy Jack were pretty good. I thought Superpitcher was disappointing, but I agree that the Underground Stage was not the ideal location for him (or anyone, really) to play. Nitzer Ebb did remind me of high school, oh so long ago. And geez, Otto von Schirach -- gabber gabber GABBER!

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Anybody catch Pascal FEOS on Saturday or Donnacha Costello on Sunday? Cuz they were both amazing.

Trace Henry (Trace), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Caught both and were in awe, except for the technical difficulties Feos was having with the sound being too low. At one point, he took of his headphones and turned them towards the crowd, acting as though there was more sound coming from them than the system at that point. The Perlon party was fantastic, Adam Beyer rocked my world, and Derrick May played a terrific set on Sunday. All in all, it was the perfect weekend, and I can't wait for next year. Hats off to Paxahau for get the job done.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 09:26 (twenty years ago)

i can't believe how hot it was in chicago. it must've been good and sweaty near some of those stages.

did donnacha costello just do a set of minimise-type stuff or was it all new and unrecognizable?

how about carl craig? i remember hearing him play a set probably about 4-5 years ago to around 200 people at a small-ish venue where he just built and built from dubs that were obviously his own stuff, but pressed specifically for dj-ing. by about an hour in, he had the whole place locked and it continued that way until close and rapturous applause. it was right around the time he was doing the tunes/remixes that i imagine now would neatly foreshadow and link together stuff like innerzone orchestra and paperclip people to what he's doing today. it was very underground and still in the blakula phase with more eastern percussion than big analog riffs and detroit techno strings, but there were moments of analog goodness - definitely his brand of swaggering almost downtempo house. i am thinking of massively dubbed out and beefy versions of the remixes he did for the orb and tori amos or even that huge cesaria evora remix he did. great stuff and i am thinking it would've been so excellent to hear his 2006 update...

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Craig got off to a rocky start, being that it was 92 degrees out, making it extremely difficult to see the LCD on the Powerbook, as well as making the wax prone to melting and scaring from the crazy heat. The poor guy had to build a cardboard fort around the laptop and keep the decks covered with cardboard boxes as well. I couldn't handle the heat myself, so I went to catch some shade under a tree and ended up passing out for a bit. I woke up to him playing "Good Life," and saw that Kevin Saunderson was dancing to it with Craig's little girls behind him. A lot of the family was there watching him, which made it a hot spot for the press. The set was quite like the one you mentioned, with the last 1/2 hour or so being the best, including his remixes of Maurizo's Dominas, Liiquid Liquid's Optimo, His Talking Heads remix, and some Munich Machine. I enjoyed it, but I think it would have been much better had it not been so ridiculously hot outside.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 21:42 (twenty years ago)

This old guy was only able to catch Monday's lineup (unavoidable life stuff for the other days) but one big thing that stuck with me aside from heatstroke was how relatively empty Hart Plaza was for most of the day. I was preparing for the solid turnouts of the past, but I guess that's what charging admission will do to curious foot traffic.

While Carl Craig was pretty sweet, I'm almost ashamed to admit how much I liked seeing Nitzer Ebb live for the first time ever. To segue from Derrick May's solid two-hour set into the first rumbles of "Getting Closer" reminds me why I still get excited to see the lineup after all these years. Makes me sad that I couldn't do the other days...or the afterparties, for that matter.

(And if anyone has 2001 European TV footage of a black-jacketed 6'6" interviewer, let me know...I want to prove to my near and dears that it actually exists.)

Erick H (Erick H), Thursday, 1 June 2006 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Saturday and Sunday had much bigger crowds than Monday, it seemed to me. Monday night was EMPTY everywhere that Hawtin was not playing. In contrast, pretty much every stage was packed from 9pm onwards on Sunday night.
