"I Found That Essence Rare"

Grand (grand), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps too obvious, but "At Home He's a Tourist"

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

5.45 I really like melodica though.

I've always wondered if other people prefer the Peel Sessions versions of the songs from Entertainment, or it's just me because I heard the Peel Sessions first then Entertaintment.

T B (T B), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:32 (twenty years ago)

I interviewed Dave Allen and he chastised me for being a fan and not owning the Peel Sessions. He said he thought those tracks were better on Peel...

Confounded (Confounded), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Return The Gift

I was a little disappointed when the opened their reunion concert with this. Nowhere to go but down from there.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Today, I'll say "What We Want"....one of my favourite "train" songs.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I think it might be "Ether"

dave's good arm (facsimile) (dave225.3), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

it's totally Ether!

ghost dong (Sonny A.), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Madame Mao

Wub-Fur Internet Radio (wubfur), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

One? ONE??? Okay...eeeh...uhh..."Natural's Not In It." [head explodes]

I've always wondered if other people prefer the Peel Sessions versions of the songs from Entertainment, or it's just me because I heard the Peel Sessions first then Entertaintment.

The only Peel Sessions version I prefer to the original is "Guns Before Butter."

See also: GO4 POX. And I got another ten right here:

12. Return the Gift
13. Lord Make Me A Cowboy. Dutch flexi, 1981.
14. Contract (alternate version)
15. A Hole in the Wallet
16. I Found That Essence Rare. Via Greil Marcus, 1980: "Yes I do write the songs, ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much. And now, with your permission, I'd like to tell you how I found that...essence rare..."
17. He'd Send In The Army. Live version from Urgh! A Music War. Lord have mercy.
18. Armalite Rifle. "I disapprove of it. So does Dave."
19. It Is Not Enough
20. The Republic, even though I can't understand about half the lyrics.
21. At Home He's A Tourist

What can I say? Love me some shouty marxist art guys of yesteryear. To hell with branded content.

xpost-Hee.

xero (xero), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

How is it not "To Hell With Poverty"?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Damaged Goods by far.

Harrison Barr (Petar), Monday, 24 April 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

"Contract"

D. Bachyrycz, Monday, 24 April 2006 20:16 (twenty years ago)

OK, I lied, it's actually "Damaged Miracle," the Doppelbanger thing with the over-the-top house diva vocal on it. If that counts.

xero (xero), Monday, 24 April 2006 20:34 (twenty years ago)

"What We All Want (live)"

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 24 April 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

ugh, rough... I used to say '5.45' without a doubt, but that's just 'cause the climax perfectly sums up our political age

but after shouting back the chorus to 'Damaged Goods' within spitting range of Andy's guitar...
well, i'll stick with '5.45', but just by a nose

[and no one's taken 'We Live As We Dream, Alone' yet??]

davelus (davelus), Monday, 24 April 2006 22:27 (twenty years ago)

[and no one's taken 'We Live As We Dream, Alone' yet??]

I was probably gonna take that one tomorrow

peepee (peepee), Monday, 24 April 2006 22:29 (twenty years ago)

it's totally Ether!

It totally is!

Ben Dot (1977), Monday, 24 April 2006 23:37 (twenty years ago)

"Anthrax"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 00:03 (twenty years ago)

OTM

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 02:02 (twenty years ago)

The part where he repeats over and over "Love'll get you like a case of anthrax and that's something I don't wanna catch" in that super syncopated way is the greatest.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 02:04 (twenty years ago)

perfectly sums up our political age

Yeah, that, plus the teenage female reptile brain (tm) votes Classic, instantly and permanently. Speaking of which, where's NewRomantic or whoever that is to bring the love for Hard? Somebody's gotta do it.

xero (xero), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 02:18 (twenty years ago)

I always rather liked the Peel session for "I Found That Essence Rare" over the "Entertainment" version. Sounds like it's at the right speed, on the Peel session.

So Ho La (So Ho La), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 02:55 (twenty years ago)

"5.45"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 03:00 (twenty years ago)

First time I heard the guitars on Damaged Goods I died and went to heaven. So I have no choice.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 03:10 (twenty years ago)

At Home He's A Tourist (Peel version for the intro alone)

wtin, Tuesday, 25 April 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

"Ether" for sure!

Mr. Silverback (Mr. Silverback), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Depending on how poppy I'm feeling, it's either "Anthrax" or "I Love A Man In A Uniform".

Dan (My God, You Must Be Joking) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Gang of Four are one of those bands that, although I love a lot of their output, I have never gotten over the thrill of the first track I ever heard. Which was "Anthrax". Wins by a country mile.

emil.y (emil.y), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Anthrax seconded, though a live version would be bestest.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

More Anthrax over here, thanks.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

"Damaged Goods"

Badvuggum (Badvuggum), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Anthraaaaaaaaaaaaax!

Niall, Tuesday, 25 April 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

"Outside the Trains Don't Run on Time" since I prefer Solid Gold over Entertainment!, though I love both.
