Their name comes from a baseball anecdote. During the 1962 season, Richie Ashburn, the center fielder of the New York Mets, was crashing again and again with Venezuelan Elio Chacón. When Ashburn went for a catch, he would scream, "I got it! I got it!" only to collide with the 160 pound (73 kg, 11 stones 6 pounds) Chacón, who spoke only Spanish. Ashburn learned to yell, "Yo la tengo! Yo la tengo!" which is "I've got it" in Spanish.

Busta Rhymes -- named after Buster Rhymes, Oklahoma football player of the 1980s or '70s. (I always thought that Jarvis Redwine, a guy who played for Nebraska about the same time, was a good name for a band.)

Does The Outfield count?

Houston bluesman/soul singer Joe Medwick took that as his stage name from the St Louis Cardinal baseball Hall of Famer. He was also the guy who actually wrote "Further On Up The Road," but he sold it to Don Robey for a couple of bottles of whiskey.

Houston bluesman/soul singer Joe Medwick took that as his stage name from the St Louis Cardinal baseball Hall of Famer

So he decided Joe was a better stage name than Ducky (the original Joe Medwick's nickname)?

A big one: Yo La Tengo

From Wikipedia:

Their name comes from a baseball anecdote. During the 1962 season, Richie Ashburn, the center fielder of the New York Mets, was crashing again and again with Venezuelan Elio Chacón. When Ashburn went for a catch, he would scream, "I got it! I got it!" only to collide with the 160 pound (73 kg, 11 stones 6 pounds) Chacón, who spoke only Spanish. Ashburn learned to yell, "Yo la tengo! Yo la tengo!" which is "I've got it" in Spanish.

If you start a thread called "Bands named after athletes," is that really your idea of a good time, or do you just want to be down with the thread-startin' crew?
