I only have 'Share the night' by World Premiere, which the dub side is amazing, and 'You Dont Know' by Serious Intention. What are other good releases of early New York house that are as good. I just started a new night, playing records ,and I mostly play disco, but I want to play old house towards the end of the night. I know Chicago/Detroit house, but what about NY.

'ma foom bay' by cultural vibe is a house classic. ultra deep with tribal chants. i have a few other records on easy street - beltram, adeva, cassio, brooklyn beats, mental instrum etc. but 'ma foom bay' is the one i still play. i think de'lacy's 'hideaway' started life on easy street as did undo muzique's 'andromeda'.

Really love Adeva's "In and Out of My Life" on Easy Street and that Cultural Vibe track is great. Clausell's "Don't Let It Be Crack" is good (at least, for a laugh), too.

For New York house of that time, though, I think Quark is the way to go. The stuff on that label was generally more streamlined and "cooler," if you will, than Easy Street. The early Blaze and Jomanda stuff, in particular.

just dug out adeva. i forgot how good 'in and out of my life was'!

"i think de'lacy's 'hideaway' started life on easy street"

I love this sentence.

Hugg & Pepp's acid remix of the Adeva track from last year is probably even better than the original.

i am baffled.

"i am baffled. "

sorry, i was just noting how you inadvertently used the term "life on easy street" (is this not a common phrase for describing the good life in the UK? It certainly is over here). Explaining it makes it seem like a very small, silly thing to notice.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

ok, i see! is it a common phrase here? i'm not sure actually (maybe in england?) but i certainly know it from watching neighbours back in the day.

"I Love Life" by Johan Square is the happiest of the Easy Street house singles...

Nervous is another of the great NY house labels...Nu Groove too, though they were a bit darker and dubbier...

anything with "Victor Simonelli" on it = great NY house...

in my opinion nervous records (despite releasing a few gems) wasn't that great a label. nu groove was obviously great but i think of the nyc house labels, strictly rhythm doesn't get the love it deserves. most of the first 100 releases were awesome. then came the slide......

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 27 April 2006 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. It's really easy to forget Strictly Rhythm's greatness in light of that slight. But shit, Aly-Us' "Follow Me," is a murderer to this day.

I love Jomanda's "Make my body rock"...

Possibly a little later than you're looking for but there is some really nice stuff on Eightball (and also a lot of crap). I particularly like Joi Cardwell's "Trouble" and "Run to you" and also the Basement Boys remixes of the 250lbs of blue songs.

What about Sleeping Bag Records?

"new york house": sonic distiction, or mostly geographic/labels? i also assume it meant different things different decades. lern me internet!

I'm searching more for a certain sound, and was wondering whether more of it existed on certain labels.I think the records I've been playing are more proto-house, like Visual, Hot Streak, Tony Lee, Serious Intention. Someone told I should just start playing Garage. It made me realise I know nothing about new york house music. I had always thought of Garage as a mis-interpretation of the sound played at the Paradise Garage, based on certain disco records: but excluding other records played there. I'm not sure where i got that idea from, but it led to chicago instead of new york for old house records.

If you're coming at it from a trippy/weird disco angle, it's highly unlikely you'll like most of the stuff which gets called 'garage' as it tends to be fairly stripped back tracks with diva-ish vocals - working mostly off the 'soul' side of disco. If on the other hand, you generally love 90s US house, then you might well be into it.

The most famous examples of big 'garage' tracks are probably something like De'Lacy's "Hideaway" (mentioned upthread), Sounds of Blackness' "The Pressure" and Byron Stingily's "C'mon get up everybody"
