Geographically Speaking: Best Scenes

What are the best scenes centered around a geographical location in the history of rock and roll?

I will proffer a few...

* Detroit - Motown and (as a separate entity) the proto-punk stuff (and what the hell, Creem too - Boy Howdy!)

* New York's CBGB's No Wave scene

* San Francisco Bay Area Underground Metal of the early '80s

I would mention Seattle however it's too early in the morning to be repeatedly poked with pointy sticks...

If Stax Studio in Memphis and Cosimo Matassa's in New Orleans count as "scenes," the number of great records that came out of those two little buildings, and the many musicians and hangers-on who hung out in them is pretty mindboggling.

How log does Avon have to not exist for before people realise that it doesn't exist? But nonetheless you are right. Although I would add the South Downs and the Lake District.

And DC for its punk because it's so goddamn small yet so goddamn great.

I have to say that if I could magically be transported anywhere to listen to rock music, London late 1970s wins easily for me.

I don't think it really ranks as one of the greats but the mid-Atlantic coast in the early 1990s would have been surprisingly fun (Superchunk, Pavement (UVa), Archers of Loaf, Polvo, David Berman).
