Trance-y Techno?

I've been noticing a few tracks recently which are basically more or less techno but feature some trance-y elements: Beautiful arpeggios, sweeping pad breakdowns and the like. Specifically I'm referring to:

Hugg & Pepp - Snabeln
Rex The Dog - I look into mid air
Lindstrom - I feel space
The Knife - Silent Shout
Matthew Jonson - Marionette

Anybody got more recommendations in this direction (esp. tracks like Rex the Dog's)?

Herr Fahrstuhl (Herr Fahrstuhl), Saturday, 29 April 2006 12:11 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't really describe any of the above as techno but I can see where you're coming from - everything seems to be going more trance at the moment. Anyway, these should float your boat:

Ame - Rej
Texas - What About Us (Jacques Lu Cont Mix)
Nathan Fake - Sky Was Pink (James Holden Remix)
Extrawelt - Soopertrack (hell, anything on Border Community really)
Booka Shade - In White Rooms

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 29 April 2006 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Dominik Eulberg - Blueten sind dem Grossen Schillerfalter fremd
Ananda & Eulberg - Harzer Roller
Gabriel Ananda - Ihre Personliche Glucksmelodie
Huggotron - Glasshouses
Lazy Fat People - Big City
Stephan Bodzin vs Marc Romboy - Phobos
Thomas Schumacher - Redpurple
D-Saw - Track 10:30
Agoria - Les Beaux Jors
Sweet Light - Abusator
Sweet Light - Mechaniques Remotees

Kompakt represent:

Michael Mayer - "Touch" and "Amabile"
The MFA - The Difference It Makes (Superpitcher Remix)
And don't forget Kaito's good old ecstasy house biznizz

On a similar tip (but going back a few years): Cosmos's 'Take Me With You', be sure to get the version with Madonna's "Everybody" vocal looping over the outro.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 29 April 2006 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Michael Forzza - Kahana
Cosmo Kid - Neon Pressure (Haak Remix)

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I thought the Florent single on K2 had this kind of vibe, slightly cosmic, good synth arpeggios, but still pretty straightforward techno

Dominique (dleone), Saturday, 29 April 2006 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Good timing for this thread I suppose, as this is a question that's really surfaced for me over the last half a week.

Theres this one track on The second part of Philip Sherburne's Radio Isla Negra mix that I really like and fits the category well, I just don't know what it is. It's near the beginning and it's mixed in from Drums and Feathers by Matias Aguayo.

Thomas Mehlt (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Sunday, 30 April 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

the mix which can supposedly be heard here.

Thomas Mehlt (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Sunday, 30 April 2006 00:02 (twenty years ago)

not sure how many of these i would describe as veering towards trance

with the obvious exception of extrawelt's soopertrack,

i think the seeds are there though, for things to move in this direction, for better or worse

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 30 April 2006 05:55 (twenty years ago)

Robert Babicz - Cloudpainter

Good Dog (Good Dog), Sunday, 30 April 2006 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Roykopp - Only This Moment (Alan Braxe Remix)

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 30 April 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

pretty sure that's a mobilee track you're talking about. it's funny because i tend to think of mobilee as being really micro, but they definitely have the occasional trance undercurrent.

another interesting trance-related label i've just discovered is elettronica romana.... whatever the most recent disc is, it's killer...

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Sunday, 30 April 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Kaito

splates (splates), Sunday, 30 April 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

yeah, those Italian dudes are making unashamedly nice trance at the moment, Georgio Gigli, Donato Dozzy. Also worth checking out is Lan Music out of Berlin, especially Donato Dozzy & Exercise One Skarciofen. Some connection with Mobilee there I think with Exercise One...

Good Dog (Good Dog), Sunday, 30 April 2006 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Secret Knowledge - "Sugar Daddy" (1993)

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 30 April 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

seconding the gigli, love his stuff right now

Dominique (dleone), Sunday, 30 April 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

also, see Gabriel Ananda's great "Take Off", which was the b on his Ananda's Bassmaschinchen single. This builds and builds and doesn't ever really explode, but hangs around in this really heavenly place for a long time.

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 1 May 2006 00:11 (twenty years ago)

and speaking of Ananda, his track w/Cio D'Or "Lauschgoldengel" is so ridiculously blissed out that I'm just going to stop posting now.

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 1 May 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

lauschgoldengel is festival soundsystem music*! it even sounds, almost...british! i sort of imagine this on an old colin faver mixtape

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

oh, and robert babicz - my blue car

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

*like, i dunno, followers of bandulu/spacedjsbrixton/megadog/sabrettes, or something!

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

it actually reminded me of that one terrible ass Moby song. except I like this. the chord sequence they use should technically be really obvious and used up, but it somehow never fails to fluff me

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:13 (twenty years ago)

i can see a plastic dreams style revival a-coming

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:50 (twenty years ago)

how strange, i heard 'plastic dreams' two days ago, first time in years. it sounded great!

something less threatening (heywood), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 03:02 (twenty years ago)

i have been itching to bust out some old eye-q tunes and show the similarities between something like Metal Master's Spectrum and Dominik Eulberg's stuff.

hector (hector), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 03:29 (twenty years ago)

sven vath is just waiting in the wings to release stuff he has been saving since the early 90s

hector (hector), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 03:31 (twenty years ago)

philip, are you reffering to Rossella & Modern Heads-Paschen Back EP?

Next time you release a mix, it'd be a courtesy, especially for the artists, to include a tracklist.

Richard Owen (dickrich), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

i know, i know, i keep meaning to - i just have shit for recall, and my records are always scattered all over the place and the idea of reconstructing a mix, after more than a week, becomes agonizing. but these are lame excuses and you're right, absolutely, esp for the artists included.

not sure if that's the same EP, i need to check.....

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:07 (twenty years ago)

that is a good record tho

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:11 (twenty years ago)

ok "Lauschgoldengel" is pretty great

a Rabbit on the Moon revival is scheduled to happen any second now

hector (hector), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

oh, i hope not!

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and then there's Patrick Chardronnet's wonderful Eve by Day... (props to Jonnie Wilkes of Optimo for introducing me to this track)

Herr Fahrstuhl (Herr Fahrstuhl), Friday, 5 May 2006 12:30 (twenty years ago)

And of course most of the recent tracks done by wonderful Einmusik, e.g. Jittery Heritage and their remix of Egoexpresses' Knartz IV.

Herr Fahrstuhl (Herr Fahrstuhl), Sunday, 7 May 2006 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Also "Shaw"!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 7 May 2006 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Tim, have you heard Einmusik Pate Mo Tu Vae? It's prog! But nice enough i suppose, set and setting and all that.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Sunday, 7 May 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Shaw is great!

lf (lfam), Saturday, 13 May 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

How about the new single by the Field? "Istedgade" & "Over the Ice" pages Todd Edwards in a way that I'm not sure how I feel about.

natedey (ndeyoung), Saturday, 13 May 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Natedey, I second that recommendation!

Herr Fahrstuhl (Herr Fahrstuhl), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Over the Ice is rad. you can hear it on Kompakt myspace. Also the new Supermayer remix of Gui Boratto is there.

Roman Flugel's remix of Radio Slave 'My Bleep'. Awesome!

Good Dog (Good Dog), Sunday, 28 May 2006 05:03 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Someone really does need to do a mix of all the big trance riffy songs at the moment, and not be too high-minded to exclude Madonna's "Get Together" (sadly the Holden remix of said track is rather bad). Hard to believe this may be my favourite development of 05/06!?!?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 30 June 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

Kompakt is on Myspace?

Jena (JenaP), Saturday, 1 July 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

Loads of German labels are on Myspace. It's great, if only I had an account!

xpost. The trancey thing has really taken me by surprise too Tim. If my 16 year old self somehow got wind of the fact that I would be listening to trance then I doubt I'd be here to type these words!

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Saturday, 1 July 2006 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

Worse than getting into trance is getting into an arty middle-class appropriation of trance!

But talking to Arno from Booka Shade on this was interesting, b/c he totally confirmed my view of "In White Rooms" - they deliberately set out to make a track that was both sad and uplifting, or rather uplifting through its sadness. And he was talking about how the first wave of trance, when the genre was still coalescing, was all about that, about techno tracks that emphasised melodic emotionalism, rather than about a particular sonic construction. There's a certain fragility of emotion at the heart of the anthemics which is what makes this new faux-trance work.

More generally it satisfies my deep-seated need for ridiculous tearjerkerness. The last time I really paid attention to trance was in its late 90s/early 00s pop-trance crossover period, which sometimes did this as well - stuff like Fragma's "Toca's Miracle" - but was mostly more focused on just beating the hell out of a good hook.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 1 July 2006 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

The appropriation element is worrying. I find myself listening to 'nu-prog' and 'nu-trance' as if Minilogue and Booka Shade being cool Euro-types somehow sanitises those formerly, for me, verboten genres. This obviously leaves me with the quandary: did I just hate this stuff because it made me think of bloated-lobstery-English-pleb holiday makers "'aving it large" in Ibiza, or alternatively is it the sound design and arrangement which has provoked the change of heart? I can say the latter, but I suspect snobbishness may be a factor.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Saturday, 1 July 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

From 2003: Overrocket - 'The Sky Still Seems Small' & 'Shadow Of The Sun'.

Headspin (Barima), Saturday, 1 July 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

Trance-y french house like Lifelike is cool too.

gaseous (gaseous), Saturday, 1 July 2006 01:38 (nineteen years ago)

Things have come full circle I guess because at the beginning of the 90s trance and techno weren't so disparate. The early Tresor compilations had a bunch of trance-ish tracks on them besides the usual techno bangers.

The nu-trance/prog movement has probably been developing ever since Kaito first appeared, but I don't think it really gained notice and momentum as a movement of sorts until Holden's Sky is Pink (and subsequently the discovery of Border Community) enamored practically everyone who heard it.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 1 July 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

Based on the clip on the Get Physical website, the "Mexico Remix" of "In White Rooms" is possibly even trancier than the original.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 1 July 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Trance-y french house like Lifelike is cool too.

yes! Alan Braxe's remix of John Lord Fonda's "So Far Away" is MASSIVE, in a tranced out Black Strobe-grind kind of way.

on a lighter, more blissed out tip, search: Kris Menace's "Jupiter".

Mind Taker (Mind Taker), Saturday, 1 July 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

eighteen years pass...

I love this so much. does it sample a video game? It makes me feel like I’m in an air conditioned video arcade fully caffeinated
