What are the best underground clubs in New York? The ones populated by the young and beautiful? What music do they play?

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Cafe Carlyle. Cocktail jazz.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

It's totally dead, is all you need to know. A fucking ghost town.

'Blue States Lose' to thread

davelus (davelus), Friday, 2 June 2006 02:58 (twenty years ago)

unfortunately, the young and beautiful don't go to the best underground clubs. It's a real catch-22 (year old that is!)

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 2 June 2006 03:45 (twenty years ago)

You're a DJ aren't you Dan, do you play out in NY? Are things really so bad? What are the best underground clubs there and if the Y&B don't go there, where DO they go?

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 2 June 2006 06:43 (twenty years ago)

do people really like to go and sit on a pretend beach in one of the clubs over there? according to some bizarre dvd that comes free with fischerspooner's mix album THE OTHER SIDE they do. it looked really weird.

Not really sure what you mean by underground clubs though...There are a variety of things, big illegal loft parties, most famously Rubulad in Brooklyn, and plenty of ad hoc one-offs at various spaces throughout the city. But I don't understand the idea that the young and beautiful give a shit about music generally, therefore they're not usually found at the "best underground clubs".

Don't know about a pretend beach in a club...there's usually a beach in the courtyard of the art museum PS1 for it's summer warm up afternoon parties, which are always packed. Cosmic legend Beppe Loda is on this summer's schedule! There's also a new beach as of last year being built by the Water Taxi in Long Island City and I hear they're planning on throwing PS1 after parties, but both are technically outside, although PS1 is walled in.

is the PS 1 schedule out? someone told me the idjut boys and glimmers would be playing, but i haven't seen anything specific.

rajeev (rajeev), Friday, 2 June 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember where but I saw it listed, maybe it was someone's tentative schedule that leaked?

There's usually 1 maybe 2 a summer that I find interesting. Past highlights included Metro Area with a full live band and Danny Wang, Steve from Loose Joints and Dei Lewison performing "Is It All Over My Face" live.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 2 June 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

i missed both the metro area and danny wang ones, sadly. (i'm glad i didn't know about the "is it all over my face" till just now.) i remember really loving derrick may + francois K a couple years ago.

just found the 2006 schedule. this looks great!

The new PS1 schedule makes me really happy. Best one in YEARS.

totally agree. i'm excited about almost every one of these.

rajeev (rajeev), Friday, 2 June 2006 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, wow. I'm into pretty much all of it...except Kudu!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 2 June 2006 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I have just the place for you right over here

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 2 June 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

actually, all the young and beautiful are going to be at the best undergound club ever tonight. it's called Don Hills, the party is called Fixed, there will be a performance by In Flagranti and DJing by Dave P. and Dan S. and it's free if you RSVP to [email protected]

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 2 June 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

between that lineup and a lot of the rvng stuff that happens there and every fucking other thing and friends that have moved there, i really wish i lived there.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 2 June 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Ha! Dan, aren't In Flagranti pretty much the same people as Kudu, plus a friend?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 2 June 2006 23:08 (twenty years ago)

are they? I don't know. Don't know much about either except some Kudu lyrics really turned me off to them, as well as some of their fans.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 3 June 2006 00:02 (twenty years ago)

the bio Fixed sent out says "In Flagranti are producers Cosmic Rocker and Alex Gloor," whereas the myspace page says "Sasa Crnobrnja (In Flagranti/ Organic Grooves) on keyboard/FX Chantal Ughi on Vox Betty Black on bass Meret Koehler on drums" and somewhere else says the woman from Kudu plays bass with them. Online an old zingmagazine says Alex Gloor was one of 2 behind SmylonNylon/Center for the Dull, who had all these totally italo/cosmic mix tapes.

so I don't know who's who or what. they just (hopefully) pay me to play records.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 3 June 2006 00:10 (twenty years ago)

except some Kudu lyrics really turned me off to them

ha ha, were they the "east village underground" lyrics we were parsing that night at nublu?
