anthony, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Necrophilia is off limits here.

If you have the money because I think there are at least 20 of those (many are 2/3 CD sets). If only I had the money I would get a few.

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

24 and i dont have the money , which ones .

anthony, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd go for the ones that have versions of 'dark star' or other tracks on live/dead. I'd also try gigs from the early 70s first. That's what I'd go for if i had a bit of spare cash.

Here's my tip: somewhere near were you live there is a organic food co-op or something like that and there is a guy with long straggly hair and bifocals and this guy has seen hundreds if not thousands of Dead shows and this guy owns every one of the Dick's Picks (not to mention his hundred and ninety-seven other bootleg cassettes) and he'll be able to tell you which one of these 24 collections is the one to go with. Go for and find that man, son, for he will guide to the promised land.

Big Dave to thread!

Alex- surely if he is that fanatical he'll just say to buy all of it.

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If he's a true fan, he'll make you a free copy.

Dave225, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dave, you obviously knows more of these guys than Julio does.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

True. Never met a Dead fan.

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's cause you're are British (I'm guessing). I, unfortunately, have known a few too many.

Ack.

Get Europe 72 first. The best introduction to the Dead. Then get Two From The Vault. You have to grow accustomed to the minimal sonic processing of the Dick's Picks records before they start to sound good. Once you do, the song selection and performances on Dick's Picks Vol. 18 are excellent (I only have a few, so these are just records I like. There are a million places online to find Dead reviews from hardcore fans.)

I like vol. 16 a lot--an August '69 performance that covers a lot of Live/Dead and American Beauty/Workingman's Dead territory both. by the way, I totally disagree about Europe '72 as the way in: Live/Dead is still shattering, particularly on the Rhino reissue (part of The Golden Road box but if yr on a budget wait for the individual reissues).

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DON'T GET INTO THE DEAD
