What's Going on With Dischord Records?

With Fugazi on eternal hiatus and most of the younger generation of DC bands like Q and Not U and Black Eyes broken up, is Dischord Records done for? Interested DC Ilxfolk, any word around there? The Dischord website hasn't been updated in ages, and they don't seem to have anything on the release schedule. There's lots of things in the vaults they could put out that would be thrilling (Vile Cherubs re-issue comes to mind), but they don't seem to even be doing re-issues anymore. Anybody know anything?

The Evens are playing shows in the UK and Ireland in March and April. Please check the tour page for details.

Joe Lally is going to be touring the east coast with Don Zientara in March. Details are on the tour page, and on Joe's new website; http://alkem.org/joelally/

French Toast are also about to embark on a short tour, this time to Canada playing shows on the east coast of the States along the way. Dates are on the tour page.

2.08.06

Channels, featuring J. Robbins, Janet Morgan and Darren Zentek have recorded a full-length that will be coming out on Dischord. We don't yet have a solid release date in mind but hope to have it out close to summertime. For more information on Channels go to http://www.channelstheband.com

Dischord will also be releasing a record from Soccer Team, a new collaboration fronted by Ryan Nelson (Routineers, ex-Beauty Pill, ex-Most Secret Method) and Melissa Quinley. Over the last year Ryan has been recording all kinds of bits and pieces, songs and vignettes in his basement, often inviting Melissa to help him flesh out and contribute ideas. Although these recordings were intended more for private enjoyment than commercial release once the tapes were shared with us it became clear that this collaboration should see the light of day. Like the Channels release, we don't yet have a definitive schedule in place for this release.

French Toast recently returned from two weeks of shows with Supersystem. They are currently writing songs as a newly expanded three piece and will continue playing on the east coast. Check out the tour page for upcoming shows.

The Evens spent most of January writing and are hoping to have enough material to begin working on a new album in the near future.

Medications are home after spending most of the second half of 2005 on tour in The states and Europe. They are playing some individual dates but have not yet chartered a course for 2006.

Antelope is playing a rare show on February 26th in Washington DC. Check the tour page for details.

Joe Lally (Fugazi) has been writing and performing solo sets and recently played a handful of shows with Don Zientara along the east coast. Joe has also been recording and hopes to release an album of this material in the future.

That was four months ago, though.

Has Dischord's output really slowed down, in terms of album releases per year, that much, if at all? I get the feeling they'll just keep puttering alone forever, even if all the current bands that have released anything lately (save for Lungfish) seem to be side projects or new bands by members of Dischord bands from 10 years ago.

Seems to me they have 2 active bands right now - The Evens and Lungfish - and 2 that are in a more tenuous state - French Toast and Medications. They haven't put anything out in over half a year. They mention Soccer Team in that old wesbite update, but that doesn't seem to be a band that plays live or anything. I guess I'm just wondering if it's the label or the "scene" in DC - are there any interesting new local bands there right now?

Antelope is playing shows in in July and September, according to the tour page on the site.

I wouldn't say this spells the long, slow end for Dischord, but it just seems a bit quiet lately is all. Wouldn't know the first thing about the DC scene though.

I think Dan Higgs & Lungfish can power a label all by themselves, even if the Evens break up.

I thought that Dischord was run out of Toledo anymore... Maybe it's just old MT folks who are still tapped in and not the nerve center, but Toledo as HQ could explain a slow-up.

one month passes...
new update on the Dischord site says they're releasing 6 or 7 albums in the second half of the year (including a Joe Lally solo LP), so I guess it was just a temporary lull.

Capital Swamp: The DC Resource Thread

JS, Jeff Nelson moved out to Toledo I think, but the rest of Dischord is still in the DC/Virginia area.

Yeah, it's Jeff Nelson. I just found out that one of my neighbors, from Toledo, is good friends with him. He's trying to build some sort of inner city youth arts camp/festival thing right now.

That's cool!

And bonus points for actually opening it up for pre-orders before setting the pressing numbers. I know that adds some logistical nightmares, but honestly so much better for fans that a random ass guess as a pressing number that only really ends up benefiting flippers.

$50 is an incredible price

wish they would just make these and distribute them via the usual channels though... add shipping to the UK and one box is $92
